In the play “The Crucible” Abigail williams was the only character to blame for all the deaths and trials. She manipulated the kids in Salem. And she pretended to be attacked multiple “demons’’ or “spirits”. All of her actions caused the death of others in the town. In the play Abigail manipulated the children in the town by making them lie in court. She lied on all the girls which cause them to be scared of the consequence . For example in act three Danforth told the girl that they would be in trouble for the lies the told in court. Another example is when tituba was being whipped, she was being beaten and was scared be hong for witch-craft so out fear she lied on other people that had nothing to do with the situation. Abigail was known
John proctor is hesitant to expose Abigail’s lies because he fears and knows she will accuse him of adultery. Back then, it was a crime to commit such acts. “PROCTOR: You will not judge me more, Elizabeth. I have good reason to think before I charge fraud on Abigail, and I will think on it. Let you look to your own improvement before you go to judge your husband anymore.”(Miller 58). In this example, Elizabeth tries to question him, and John Proctor feeling ashamed and guilty attacks her back, trying to change the subject. The old psychology trick, to look back on herself, and not think about John’s Proctors positon. When asked what are all the commandments he stutters and forgets all but one, which was the adultery. Which is ironic, since he committed it and having reason
At first we can sense Abigails power when she developed a plan to acquire Proctor. . Abigail Williams manipulates the citizens of Salem in order to gain power over John Proctor and she will stop at nothing until she sees her plan succeed. The first step t her plan is to eliminate Elizabeth in the court, meaning that she wants to blame Elizabeth. She but also strives for Proctor to fall in love with her again. Abigail uses her ability and finds Proctors flaws and weaknesses in order to maneuver him into her own advantage and eventually gain power over him.
Those who attack a person drictletly not the argument during a disscuison show their weakness, as they can't disprove or counter it . In hopes of stopping the maddness andsaving his wife, john Proctor goes to court to accuse Abigail of fraud. John can prove Abigail's lies, as she has confessed to him of truth in priavte. Parris, needy to save his daughter Betty and Cousin Abigail attacks john verbaly and questions his Christanity by saying "Such a Christian that will not come to church but once in a month"(Miller 90). Parris tried to sway the courts opinon, by painting John a horrible Christain, to save his family. the usage of Ad Hominem revelas Parris's his true feeling about John and would rather see Elithbeth suffer than his on. Ad hominem
What if you lived during a time when people feared anything that was different or strange to them? When that fear led people to cruelty. Then you would know what it was like to live during the time of the Salem Witch Trials.
All people commissioned to hang in Salem were innocent… how did they end up there? Through the lies and accusations of Abigail, a teenager whose head was filled with power, revenge, and her reputation. In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible he clearly shows that Abigail is guilty in more ways than one. She is guilty of lies…accusation… and even murder.
Abigail lied to the village as well about Tituba making her drink blood and making her stand naked in the middle of the night. She knew that her uncle would believe her no matter what so she took advantage of that fact.
Abigail Williams does not physically appear in Act 2 of The Crucible but she still casts a long shadow in the act. Abigail had a huge impact on the Proctors marriage. During court Abigail was sewing Mary’s doll and slipped a needle into her doll for a later reason. When Abigail later met John in the woods Abigail stabbed herself with a different needle to seek revenge on John Proctor's wife Elizabeth. Abigail testified that Elizabeth’s spirit pushed the needle into her.
The central character for The Crucible could be Abigail. Abigail is characterized as being a fabricator with destructive tendencies. Though she refuses to admit her name has been tainted in the town, Abigail knows of her carnage in the village has ruined it for good. Abigail is accused of witchcraft in the beginning of the act and therefore attempting to lie her way through it, she ends up admitting it. But alternately of taking the punishment, she blames someone else for pressuring her into it. The quote “Don’t lie! She comes to me while I sleep; she’s always making me dream corruptions!” (Miller 14) shows that Abby had admitted dreaming and doing corrupt things, but puts the blame on others. At the end of the act, the blame switches from
America’s most successful interrogator, Ali Soufan, claims that “When they are in pain, people will say anything to get the pain to stop. Most of the time, they will lie, make up anything to make you stop hurting them.” This happens in everyday life, if a person feels they are threatened, they will say whatever it takes to avoid the threat, even if it’s not true. The Crucible also shows this, representing the lengths people will go to to save themselves through deceit. In his play, Arthur Miller’s use of Abigail’s threat, Abigail’s confession with Tituba, and Mary Warren’s betrayal demonstrates that people will lie and manipulate to preserve themselves.
Abigail is the primary antagonist of Arthur Miller’s 1953 play, The Crucible. She is a seventeen year-old girl who is the niece of Reverend Parris and previously served as a servant for the Proctors' before being discharged by Elizabeth for having an affair with her husband, John. Abigail is portrayed as a vengeful, vindictive girl who, in attempt to protect herself from punishment after Parris catches them dancing in the woods, starts the Salem witch trials and remains in control of accusations. Abigail’s heartless nature stems mainly from childhood trauma, for she was raised as an orphan, who witnessed Indians smash her parents’ head on the pillow next to hers. Communitarianism clearly illustrates the role that Abigail
The Crucible Can a bunch of lies kill 19 people? No, usually not but in history this has happened before. In the late 1600’s a series of lies lead to the death of many innocent people. In The Crucible Arthur Miller uses Abigail Williams lies to leave a negative opinion of Abigail. In The Crucible Abigail is manipulative and through her speech, actions and affair we have a negative opinion of Abigail.
Also, she makes them accuse unrelated people to confuse and hide the truth. The simple reason of all the town girls around Abigail is acting the same is because it is a kind of social mentality, or
think and do. As an audience, at this stage we have a mixed opinion of
These threats by Abigail establish her control over the girls. Abigail can now commission them to say or do any one of her despicable bidings. She became the leader through intimidation and tyrannical actions. The manipulation of the girls began early in the play, yet it was so perfectly executed to work to her advantage as she fights to combat the ideals of Salem.
I am choosing how theme such as power functions in the play. I am deciding to write about Abigail because she has the most power in the play in my personal opinion. Abigail had a lot of people behind her back supporting her. She has done a lot to show why she has the most power.
