In the play “The Crucible” Abigail williams was the only character to blame for all the deaths and trials. She manipulated the kids in Salem. And she pretended to be attacked multiple “demons’’ or “spirits”. All of her actions caused the death of others in the town. In the play Abigail manipulated the children in the town by making them lie in court. She lied on all the girls which cause them to be scared of the consequence . For example in act three Danforth told the girl that they would be in trouble for the lies the told in court. Another example is when tituba was being whipped, she was being beaten and was scared be hong for witch-craft so out fear she lied on other people that had nothing to do with the situation. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, the audience introduced to a chaotic 1692 Salem, Massachusetts. Throughout the play we see a series of unreasonable events including the hanging of 19 people due to false accusations of witchcraft. These witch trials killed many people and jailed hundreds for no reason at all. There is many people to blame for the Salem Witch Trials but, Abigail Williams is most culpable.
Give me a word, John. A soft word” (Miller 22), says Abigail as she ponders her lustful intentions. In the play, The Crucible, Abigail is an antagonist who causes strife that is not fortuitous. She uses her imagination and the situation she is in to make herself appear superior and to achieve a higher status. There are also many factors that contribute to the trouble Abigail causes, such as, the Puritan society, her past, and her wits. These childish behaviors and deceitful actions cause great upheaval throughout the text. Therefore, Abigail is very much to blame for the turmoil in the play, yet she acts as if she is entitled to be pardoned from her actions.
John proctor is hesitant to expose Abigail’s lies because he fears and knows she will accuse him of adultery. Back then, it was a crime to commit such acts. “PROCTOR: You will not judge me more, Elizabeth. I have good reason to think before I charge fraud on Abigail, and I will think on it. Let you look to your own improvement before you go to judge your husband anymore.”(Miller 58). In this example, Elizabeth tries to question him, and John Proctor feeling ashamed and guilty attacks her back, trying to change the subject. People are very impressionable, especially children. Abigail used destructive power to cause chaos in Salem. In the Crucible she is viewed as strong-willed and independent. She manipulated and used people against each other as a stepping stone to hysteria.
These threats by Abigail establish her control over the girls. Abigail can now commission them to say or do any one of her despicable bidings. She became the leader through intimidation and tyrannical actions. The manipulation of the girls began early in the play, yet it was so perfectly executed to work to her advantage as she fights to combat the ideals of Salem.
Responsible for nineteen overall deaths by the end of Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, Abigail Williams is accountable for the Salem Witch Trials and surrounding hysteria. She makes false accusations against many others, and constantly manipulates others to benefit her throughout the play. Although the outside influences from her community pressures her into making the accusations she does, the main reasoning behind her actions and reactions is her own personal agenda which is obvious throughout the play. She should be held responsible for her actions and given the appropriate punishment as a result.
In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, Miller demonstrated that it was Abigail’s flaws- lust, jealousy, and mendacity- that led her to be responsible the most for the tragedy of the witch-hunt in Salem. Rather than admit to their actions and face the consequences, the girls accuse everyone else of the crimes they were guilty of. All people commissioned to hang in Salem were innocent… how did they end up there? Through the lies and accusations of Abigail, a teenager whose head was filled with power, revenge, and her reputation. During court Abigail was sewing Mary’s doll and slipped a needle into her doll for a later reason. When Abigail later met John in the woods Abigail stabbed herself with a different needle to seek revenge on John Proctor's wife Elizabeth.
