Mike Gilbert is a retired sports agent for famous athletes including former NFL players Marcus Allen and O.J. Simpson. Gilbert graduated from Penn State with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and then spent two years at WBOY in Clarksburg, West Virginia as a sports anchor. Gilbert became an author from the time of 1947-1999. The book How I Helped O.J. Get Away with Murder is mainly about Gilbert’s connection to the O.J. Simpson murder trial -. Gilbert’s purpose for writing this book is to give the reader a perspective on O.J.’s life, his football career, and his murder trial. I have a genuine interest in sports and crime, and I chose this book because it is a blend of both. Throughout the story, Gilbert describes the sports agent-athlete relationship, …show more content…

This is most likely one of the reasons that Gilbert had a difficult time seeing the truth about Simpson. After the murders, Mark Fuhrman played a primary role in the investigation of O.J. Simpson. Fuhrman was a detective in this case. He played a big part by collecting strong evidence on Simpson that became important in the defense’s strategy. Throughout Fuhrman’s investigation, a timeline of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman murders was created, and this was crucial to figuring out the truth. This is an example of a secondary source because with the help of Fuhrman a timeline was created as a concrete piece of information tracking everyone involved in the murders. The book also includes a timeline that is simple to follow and helps readers understand the horrific events that occurred. How I Helped O.J. He also says that it was hard for him to comprehend this information because he never believed that was something Mike was capable of. In the book, Gilbert also states: “He truly did love her” while talking about Simpson and his wife Nicole. With the quotes stated above, I do believe that the author proved his thesis of describing the bond he had with Simpson due to his emotional connection towards Simpson. From being childhood friends, to seeing Simpson be convicted of murder, I think that the author showed bias towards Simpson. A quote that makes me feel sad is when Gilbert states: “I felt lost in thought and trying to talk to O.J. seemed impossible to do. We have known each other for years and thinking of my best friend as a murderer seemed unrealistic.” Another quote that shows bias is when Gilbert talks about helping Simpson as not only his sports agent, but also as his friend. “ O. J. and I were close, so if he needed a little extra something before a game, I helped him in a way a friend would and not a colleague.” This bias is negative because Gilbert could have helped other people by telling the truth, including the families of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown
