In the article: After circling the world, Trudeau is ready for Question Period as Prime Minister (2015) by Campbell Clark, raises many points about how effective Trudeau has been with implementing his political agenda. Therefore, upon reading this article, I think it exemplifies a glimpse of a responsible government (so far) under the processes of democracy in comparison to other countries, which can be evaluated with a metric of democracy: participation.
The new government so far can be looked at responsible thus far, in the aspects of how much action has already been taken by Trudeau with being in office for less than a few months, as in a result through the current political situation: dissatisfaction with the former conservative government
Justin Trudeau is the 23rd Prime Minster of Canada and is the Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. Son of the late prime minister Pierre Trudeau, Justin followed in his fathers footsteps. Graduating with a bachelor’s degree from the McGill University and a degree in education from the University of British Columbia. Trudeau worked as a teacher for many years, before making his political debut. In 2006, he chaired the Liberal Party’s task force for youth renewal. Trudeau was later appointed MP of Papineau in 2008, and is still current representing that riding. When running for office, Trudeau stated he would increase tax on those who were wealthy and tax cuts for the middle class, he also stated that he would address Canada’s climate change
idea of turning Canada back to its original roots. He compares Harper's government system with Pierre Trudeau’s. Arguing about the struggles and failures of
Pierre Trudeau was the 15th prime minister of Canada. During his time as prime minister he changed a lot of Canadians lives for the better. He also, made history that will never be forgotten by past, present and future Canadians. Pierre Trudeau kept Canada united, avoiding Quebec to separate from Canada. Trudeau passed many the “Official Language Act” in 1969 making English and French Canada’s official languages. This act made government workers to offer services in both English and French. Trudeau passed many bills and acts, which adequately helped Canada to develop more as a nation. He abolished the death penalty in 1976 which didn’t make people die for the crimes they did or did not commit. He strengthened gun control laws so deaths by gun
Politicians from all three prairie provinces continue to push for assimilation of Indians and Metis, believing it to be the “ultimate solution” to fadeout reserves that would see the treaty rights ended. This would also allow the federal government to discontinue its separate programs for status Indian people. Pierre Trudeau and his Liberal government released its “White Paper,” which proposed more complete integration of Indian people that would see an end to Indian status. Indian organizations counteract with their own “Red Paper,” which they wanted to maintain their relation with the federal government and the Queen. They also wanted to preserve the treaties and the Indian Act’s protection of the special status of Indian people. This frustrated

Trudeaumania was a word used to describe the excitement and celebrity that surrounded Pierre Trudeau as he ran for the leadership of the federal Liberal Party in 1968 and subsequently became prime minister. Trudeaumania was fueled by Pierre’s charisma and by the youthful exuberance of his supporters. This term “Trudeaumania” is also a common theme increasingly used to characterize and describe his son Justin today, especially after he won his party leadership in April 2013.
Opposing the belief that a dominating leader is running Canada, Barker brings up several key realities of the Canadian government. He gives examples of several “… instances of other ministers taking action that reveal the limits prime-ministerial power,” (Barker 178). Barker conveys the fact that Canada is not bound by a dictatorial government, “…it seems that the prime minister cannot really control his individual ministers. At times, they will pursue agendas that are inconsistent with the prime minister’s actions,” (Barker 181). Both inside and outside government are a part of Canada and they can remind the prime minister that “…politics is a game of survival for all players,” (Barker 188). Barker refutes the misinterpretation of the Canadian government by acknowledging that a prime-ministerial government existing in Canada is an overstatement.
Pierre Trudeau was an effective prime minister because he created the Constitution Act as well as the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, made the Official Languages Act and decided to use the War Measures Act during the October crisis. These made Canada what it is today because of Pierre Trudeau.
Essay: What were the political ideals of Pierre Trudeau? To what extent did he live up to those ideals during his years as Prime Minister?
Some of those challenges still impact our society today. To make up for what the Canadian government has done in the past, Justin Trudeau is giving Indians money which is coming out of our taxes. Doing this shows responsibility and recognition of the things that were intended to do good, but instead ended up ruining a culture. We have given back their land rights as well. Where us Canadians need to draw for tags in order to fish or hunt, Aboriginal People are allowed to take as much as they want, wherever they want because it is part of their culture and survival. When Canadians want to go to post secondary school, we have to pay thousands of dollars. Whereas Aboriginals get a huge portion of their of their education subsidized. The Canadian
Since Justin Trudeau has been elected, he has made multiple changes, from Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, to the missing and murdered women and girls inquiry, to the legalization of marijuana.
The Government of Canada has designed several laws, programs, and services to promote safety and prevent workplace accidents; they include the Occupational Health & Safety Act, The Labour Program, the Canada Labour Code, and the Centre for Occupational Health and Safety.
Now that you are up to date with currents events I will briefly touch on some strong point of the Canadian democratic system. Citizens in Canada indirectly hold power in a free electoral system and are given better representation and more freedoms for their citizens than other systems of government. The freedom of speech, freedom of political expression, and the freedom of the media allow citizens to vote in favour of their own interest. Democracy in Canada is rooted on the grounds of equal rights; this gives people equality before the law, human rights, free and fair elections and so on. In comparison to the Third World, power is in the hands of the “Big Men”, the police and army are the ones who hold control not the people and where corruption is a norm, Canada may look like a utopia. Another strong point in the Canadian political system is everyone no matter race or sex has the right to vote as long as you are a Canadian citizen over the age of eighteen. Until the 60s/70s parties would make up electoral boundaries this was done to increase the number of votes in that location this is called gerrymander, this was unfair because certain parties had an advantage over others. However, now under the Electoral Boundaries Commissions this problem does not occur and no party has the upper hand over another. Interestingly the
Responsible government is a fundamental convention of the Canadian constitution. It is built around different structures of the government the presently exist. The authors main belief of how responsible government should function goes back to the adoption of responsible government from the political reformers, from the time of Joseph Howe. This looked at the two functions of the
In my opinion I think both prime ministers are well rounded leaders but I definitely take Trudeau’s side for multiple reasons. First off, his charisma for one, was unlike any other politician making him approachable and a more trusted leader. He created phrases, he dated famous stars, and he was also a very smart man. Because of his great achievements for Canada and his odd personality he definitely tops my list of prime ministers and I exited to see what is son can bring in years to
