1. Stargirl, the main character, also the protagonist altered her personality, demeanor, and her overall individuality by becoming ‘normal’ for Leo Borlock. Leo is important to Stargirl, which is why she chose to change herself in hope to make him happy. Stargirl chose to change when Leo expressed his feelings. He conveyed that she needs to conform to her peers by the way she dresses and speak in order to further satisfy him and enhance his attraction to her. Stargirl primary name is Susan, which is who Leo wanted her to be, ultimately. Stargirl and Susan are very different from each other. Stargirl is free and does not care about other people’s perception of her. She is very unique and exceptional. Stargirl carries a huge canvas bag with a life-size sunflower painted on along with a long dress so long that resembles a wedding gown. In that canvas bag was her pet rat she is fairly close to name Cinnamon. Susan on the other hand, is “normal” and like other teenagers her age. She wore regular jeans along with sandals topped with common accessories her classmates wore. So to conclude, a single change …show more content…
Personally, I relate to the main character, Stargirl, the most. I learned about her character throughout the book and sympathize with her individuality. As a teenager myself, it is tough to be original and learn how to develop personal independence. Stargirl is not bothered by her peer’s negative comments and I can relate. Furthermore, Stargirl likes to satisfy others and keep them happy. I have four sisters and I also can understand how she feels. I also relate to Stargirl because I tend to help others out. I do not like seeing people alone or sad. For example, I transferred to Saint Margaret Mary from Susquehanna Township. The first week was difficult socially. It is not a great situation to be in, and like Stargirl, I try to help individuals out like Dori Dilson. To conclude, Stargirl and I are similar because we both enjoy life and rather give than
The most memorable and vivid moment for me in the book Samurai Shortstop was when Moriyama was kicked for disobeying the rules of Ichiko. The rules of Ichiko are they main principles that all of the students at Ichiko must follow. Moriyama was a senior who was arguably the best pitcher in all of Tokyo. He had disobeyed these rules by going out of campus to see a girl and therefore of his disobedience he was forced to be given the clenched fist punishment. The clenched fist punishment was a penalty for any of the Ichiko men that had not followed the code of honor.
People try to hard to be popular in Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. Stargirl becomes Susan to try to be popular, but it did not work. The most important lesson that we learned from Stargirl is that popularity does not matter, no matter how much you are hated.
I enjoyed the way the author wrote the book because it felt although you were right in that hospital room with Noreen. I couldn’t stop reading the book. There was something about it that made you have the urge to keep reading. I think that I mostly connect with Noreen. Like her, I am sort of a tomboy but still care about fashion. As she did in the book, I also fall into peer pressure sometimes. One of my favourite quotes in the book is Noreen’s father always saying ‘Olive’ instead of “ I’ll have”. Whenever her father said that it made her mother laugh. Even in the hardest times when Noreen got the disease, that made her laugh. Noreen was glad to see her mother laugh. Another favourite quote from the book was, “She thanks God every day.” That made me think that I don’t thank God enough for everything I
The three sisters are triplets so they look alike with long thick black hair, average builds just a carbon-copy of each other. Missy and Claire have the same style and taste, but are exact opposites in personality. Missy was popular, did not like to study, she would rather be reading Cosmopolitan but, she was also daring and brave. In the story she is the one who is dying to meet her twin and comes up with the idea to leave town to meet her while Claire is worried and not wanting to leave. Claire could be categorized as a nerd she loved; learning, homework, and every little thing about school. She was not as popular as Missy but she was known at school. Claire fits in so well with the nerds because she is also shy and worries easy. In the story when Missy leaves on the train, she doesn't want to come or even meet the third girl she wants to stay just the way she is now. Genevieve is the middle ground she likes school, but she doesn't hate it, she is the everyone knows but is not popular. Genevieve is caring nevertheless in the book she showed this trait when she went to go care for her grandmother and the other people in the nursing home every
If had to choose a Character from the book Schooled By Gordon Korman to be my best friend it would have to Capricorn Anderson.I would pick Capricorn Anderson (known as Cap) because he is very nice and he is not like the usual boys at the school mean, jockey, and reckless.Capricorn is nice, friendly, and generous.Just like when Capricorn found a dead bird in his locker and in the middle of school he host a ceremony for the dead bird that some kids at his school put in his locker. Also Cap really loves his family and the foster home he had to go live in.Sophie is the daughter of the foster mom and her dad left her when she was a little girl.Every year she waits for him to show up at her door on her birthday.Well this year Cap was living there when
Stargirl’s changed by becoming ‘normal’ for Leo Borlock. This was a change in her attitude. The reason why she changed herself for Leo was because she knew it was important to him. Stargirl was attracted to Leo and did it to make him happy. She realized she had to change for Leo when he brought up how something has to change and he felt invisible in school being with her. Leo asked her question to understand who she is and what she does. Leo then told her the ways of the people and how the things she does is not going to make them happy.A couple days later Stargirl came into school not as Stargirl but Susan. The way she dressed, thought, and did things were always based off of if ‘they’ as in the people would do it. She went from being
When this romance initially commences, Leo notices people treating him differently as if he is an alien. This is because Stargirl is an extraordinarily typical girl who doesn’t track the culture of the school. She plays an ukulele, keeps a pet rat in her tote bag, treats everyone with kindness and serenades them in the lunchroom on their birthdays. As a result Leo requests Stargirl to transform her identity so she can fit into the school, and people won’t look down upon them. He wants her to conform into the society. She adjusts her name into “Susan”—an “ordinary” high school girl. The reader discovers in this progression that she is discontented pretending to be what she isn’t. Ultimately, she is happiest when she is factual to herself. As she articulates “Every once in a while someone comes along who is . . . a little more in touch with the stuff we’re made of, it’s our identity what really perceives who I am rather than assimilating I rather enjoy myself as who I really am. ” (Spinelli, Stargirl 177). This advocates that perhaps one can take a message from her and be a little truer to one self. Rather than following what others say and having no genuine identity, it is vital to build up an own identity a way one can be referred to as.
To begin, Stargirl defies the term normal throughout the novel with her identity as the quirky over the top person she is. “She laughed when there was no joke. She a danced when there was no music. She had no friends, but was the friendliest person in school” (Page 15, Spinelli). This quote by Spinelli shows that Stargirl is different than everyone else, not only in the way she dresses and looks, but also in her demeanor and outlook in life. The book goes along to say that the kids at Mica Area High School couldn’t make her out. In fact, Stargirls identity and refusal to join the rest of the school in their conformity lifestyles, is drawn out though character Hillari Kimble spreading the rumour across the entire school that “She (Stargirl) isn’t real” (Spinelli, Pag 7). going onto to tell Mica Area High School her conspiracy about Stargirl being a ploy by the
Stargirl was another fantastic book Jerry Spinelli. He added interesting characters, such as, Leo the quiet and shy one, Stargirl unique and fun one, Dori Dilson Stargirl only friend, Archie the wise and elderly one, Kevin Leo’s friend that likes the stoplight, and Hillari Kimble the popular bratty one. This book takes place in MICA, Arizona. Now, in paragraph one I will discuss the plot of Stargirl. Next, I will talk about the theme in Stargirl. Finally, I will evaluate Jerry Spinelli`s job on the novel Stargirl.
One short story that I was able to relate to in a sense was, “Miss Brill” by Katherine Mansfield. After studying this short story extensively, I realized that the character, Miss Brill, is someone that I can relate to. Miss Brill is the main character in this story and she is very independent and individualized. I find myself to relate to her in this sense because of her characteristics and personality traits. “She had become really quite expert, she thought, at listening as though she didn’t listen, at sitting in other people’s lives just for a minute while they talked around her” (Meyer 317). She enjoys to listen in on other
On the first day of school, students from Mica High in Arizona are talking about the new girl named Stargirl Caraway who has been homeschooled. They mostly talk about her behavior. She plays her ukulele and sings the song Happy Birthday to people who she doesn’t even know. Stargirl also carries her pet rat Cinnamon in her bag with a sunflower on it. Two boys named Leo Borlock and Kevin Quilan were interested in Stargirl. They both have a disagreement on putting her on the Hot Seat, which is a school television program. Leo thinks that the broadcasting is going to cause a problem and doesn’t want to do it, but Kevin thinks that it is going to very popular. Eventually, the do the show and it did not go very well. Although people don’t interact
Her first foster home is with a mother named Star. Star is a busty, and leggy, ex-coke addict turned Christian. Star has a boyfriend named Ray, and Astrid falls in love with him. Astrid, 13, has an affair with the 40-something Ray. Star gets jealous of their friendship and gets suspicious. One day, Star comes in, in a drunken rage and
I know that Stargirl is unique because she use to have many like ten different names such as mud pie and more but when she gets to where she dont like the name anymore she switches it that is why she switches her name all the time and there is no specific reason why she switches it it's just when she gets over her name she switches it to something better than the other one.
The first reason that Nikki is like me is sh is not popular in her middle school. I am not very popular in school. I think that when I read this book it makes me feel like someone actually knows how what I feel like in middle school. When she goes to school she just says to herself because she does not want to be picked on, but sometimes thinks that she is getting attention but she is actually being laughed at.
I think I can relate to Harry as well as everyone else can because the author gives Harry problems and attributes that everyone has. For instant Harry tries to be sneaky many times in the story.
