This production of Hamlet was set in a different time period as an artistic choice by the actors, but they did not change the script of the play.
During a night in winter in Elsinore, Denmark, a ghost walks around the platform in the the castle. The ghost was first discovered by the watchman, Francisco, then by Horatio. The ghost resembles King Hamlet who had recently passed away. His brother Claudius inherited the throne and married Queen Gertrude who was previously Hamlet’s wife and now the joint of the country. When Horatio and the watchmen bring Prince Hamlet, the son of Gertrude and the dead king to see the ghost, it speaks to him. The ghost said that it was his father but they did not know whether or not to believe it. He said that he was murdered by Claudius. He ordered his son to seek revenge on the man who took away his throne and then married his wife. Two central ideas in this drama are mortality and revenge.

During a fencing fight, Hamlet and the king were stabbed by a poisonous sabre and the queen drank from a poisonous cup causing them to die. In the end, Hamlet did avenge his father.

The Ghost informs Hamlet that it is his obligation to take revenge over his father’s death: "So art thou to revenge, when thou shalt hear"(I.i.8). It is Hamlets duty to avenge the death of the king as he is the Prince of Denmark. Further, the Ghost continues to deliver his message about the revenge: "Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder" (I.i.25). The Ghost is implying that if Hamlet loves his father then he will get the kingdom and kill Claudius. The Ghost is the starting point of the revenge plot; however, Hamlet is trying to justify the revenge by finding proof against Claudius.
