James Gatz Mr. Irby English 3 3/4/24 Of mice and men by John Steinbeck What decides to make it hard? Write 1-2 sentences talking about making tough decisions. Then write 1 sentence mentioning the novel. Then write 1-2 sentences talking about the tough decision George must make. Then write your thesis statement. Although it may look like George murdered Lennie, George felt he had to euthanize him to save the lives of animals and other people and maybe even himself. Making decisions is tough to make and especially for people who must kill someone for the great or good. Making hard decisions is almost always stressful and overwhelming, but you must not overthink it and just do it sometimes. George, in of mice and men, makes these types of decisions that are stressful, and he just needs to decide what choice to make for Lenny. The reason why George killed Lenny is that he is a danger to society and George made a tough decision and euthanized Lenny. …show more content…
It is murder because Lenny didn’t mean to kill Curley’s wife, but it is technically still murder. That may be true, but George taking out Lenny is not murder because Lenny did not mean to be a bad person and kill Curley’s wife and he knew he did a bad thing, but he didn’t want that to happen to Curley’s wife. Another reason it is murder is because Lenny is still a functioning person and can still murder and kill things even on accident, it is still an unlawful killing. However, Lenny didn’t want to be a murderer, but it happened and he was scared and didn’t know what to do. The final reason it was murder was because he didn’t know any better to kill his wife and would have been murdered. Another way to think about it is that Lenny is so handicapped that he doesn’t know how strong he is and therefore killed Curley’s wife and the dog without even trying. That is why George euthanized him for a good
George and Lennie were best friends for a long time, more like brothers. Lennie is about as bright as a 2 watt bulb, so George couldn’t really get mad at him when he accidently killed Curley’s wife while feeling the softness of her hair. “…’I ain’t mad. I never been mad, an’ I ain’t now. That’s a thing I want ya to know’”. The two had planned a future together—a future in their own dream ranch, a ranch where no trouble would ever bother them. “’You…an’ me. Ever’body gonna be nice to you. Ain’t gonna be no more trouble. Nobody gonna hurt nobody nor steal from ‘em’”. Then after he tells him about the rabbits that Lennie is so fond of, he shoots him in the back of the head where he knows it will not hurt him, and Lennie will not know what hit him. This is the peaceful alternative to what Curley had in store for him. Curley's exact words were "shoot the bastard right in the guts." George's euthanizing of Lennie makes the mentally incompetent Lennie die with dignity. Had Curley gotten to Lennie first, Lennie would have suffered. This shows you how much George cares for Lennie, no matter what he does or the crimes he commits. He’d always be there to help Lennie get right back up to his feet, make him forget all his worries, and move on like nothing happened. I strongly believe George was the right person to kill Lennie, and made the right decision in doing so, rather than to let him suffer in the hands of Curley.
George made the right decision by killing Lennie as Lennie could not escape or run anywhere after Curley found out that Lennie killed his wife. Curley wanted to kill Lennie after he saw that his wife died. “ I’m gonna get him. I’m going for my shotgun. I’ll kill the big son-of-a-bitch myself. I’ll shoot ‘i'm in the guts.” Killing Lennie painlessly was better than Lenny dying slowly and painfully. George killed Lennie because he would not be able to watch Lennie get killed by Curley.
At the end of the book Of Mice and Men Lennie accidentally broke Curley's wife's neck. Afterwards George had to come up with a decision to let Lennie die happily or let Curly torture him. George made the right decision on killing Lennie because of the things that could happen to Lennie and George. First, If Lennie was not killed by George than he would have to go threw with terrible torture with Curly. Second, George would be a lot better off without Lennie always getting them fired and getting in trouble. Finally george let him die happily. Some people think that george made the wrong decision because Lennie did not mean to kill Curley’s wife but they are wrong because Lennie could have done more terrible things and he would not be able to help it.
George made the wrong decision killing Lennie because Lennie is disabled. People that are disabled can not control their actions. Some people would say to put him in a institution. The problem is that they have no money and there was not a lot of institutions back then. Lennie did not mean to kill Curley's wife he got scared and accidently killed her.
In chapter four, Lennie accidently kills his puppy that Slim gave him. He didn’t know his own strengths and how strong he actually was. Also, in chapter five Lennie killed Curley’s wife by accident because he never realized how strong he was. George knew that Lennie didn’t purposely kill Curley’s wife. In chapter five, George said, “‘Lennie never done it in meanness,’ he said.
Did George kill Lennie for a bad reason? Did he do it because he was trying to help Lennie? Or did he do it just to be a bad guy? In John Steinbeck's novella Of Mice and Men, George killed lennie and some people think he should be punished but on the other side some people think he should not be punished because, he did it for a good reason because he wanted to help his friend, so he ended his miserable life before it could get any worse buy the other guys, since the other guys wanted to kill lennie and torture him because he killed curley's wife. But it could also be called murder which is not a good thing because, then someone is taking a life for a reason they do not even know.
I was not expecting the ending of the book at all. I thought that once George had discovered what Lenny had done that he was going to tell everyone else that Lenny was heading in the opposite direction. Then he would wait a few days until the others gave up looking for Lenny and then he would sneak off to join Lenny so they could continue on somewhere else. Instead, George said it was time to put Lenny down. Even though I was surprised what George ended up doing, I understood why he did it. Lenny never meant to hurt anyone but he always seemed to in some way. By putting down Lenny in the way he did, he prevented more deaths caused by Lenny and also prevented Lenny from experiencing a cruel death from Curley who wanted to kill him. I thought it was similar to when Candy’s dog got put down, the dog didn’t do anything wrong intentionally but it was better for everyone else that the dog was
Most people would take a quick and painless death over a slow, and brutal death. In this case, Curley can kill Lennie by shooting him in the guts, which is a brutal agonizing death. On the other hand, George can be the one who shoos Lennie in the head, which causes no pain, and for it to be really quick. When George found out what Lennie had done, he was devastated, and then coming from Curley’s mouth was, “ ‘I’m gonna shoot the guts outta that big bastard myself,’ “(Steinbeck 98). With all of the craziness being brought to the actions of Lennie shocked him.
In the novel Of Mice and Men George is Lennie's caretaker and best friend. They have a friendship that has grown into so much with all the events that have happened to them. Lennie needs the care of George and without George Lennie would have died a lot sooner. Lennie gets into trouble and George always found a way out of it for Lennie. Taking care of Lennie has challenged George's life. He could of had a normal life but now he is a full time babysitter. George has taught Lennie lessons and has helped him grow. George killing Lennie is justified because George only meant it for the better, Lennie harmed people and help George back. George did as the good of his friend and didn't want Lennie to suffer in future experiences.
some may argue George shouldn’t have shot him since they were companions. In chapter three slim and George talk about how Lennie is traveling around with George. Slim says, ‘“funny how you an’ him string along together”’(steinbeck 39) to George. Slim thinks Lennie and George's Friendship is unique. since most most migrants during the time period 1940's they usually traveled alone. From always traveling together George and Lennie have Built up a strong bond. However, Lennie had to die down because he was destructive. In chapter three Curley and Lennie have a heated conflict. Curley says to Lennie “‘Come on, ya big bastard. Get up on your feet. No big son-of-a-b is gonna laugh at me”’ (Steinbeck 62). Lennie after being hit over and over again, lennie grabs Curley’s hand and Breaks
George’s decision at the end of John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men can be defended in two ways. One sense is that George’s action to shoot Lennie was justified because George wanted the best of his friend. George knew that Lennie wouldn’t ever be happy locked up in jail, which led George to the decision of taking Lennie’s life. He also knows that Lennie is overly dependant on him, and he knows that if they were somehow separated, Lennie wouldn't survive. On the opposite end, George may have done this for his own benefit. George wanted to get rid of Lennie from the very beginning of the novel, because he wanted to live a free life without having to constantly have to Lennie’s problems.
In the novel Of Mice and Men By John Stebck, George makes the impossible decision to kill his best friend, Lennie, in a way that would cause him no pain and allow him to continue to be oblivious to the world around him. The decision that George made could be seen as unavoidable, and his only option. But there were many choices that George made that would lead up to Lennie's death that could have been prevented based upon the choices made. Although Lenny's death could have been avoided, it is important to note that his death is essential to the theme and purpose of the novel. Previously in the novel Lennie ended up in a similar situation that could have resulted in his death.
So when George had a decision to make and he made the right decision and killing Lennie was justified. So just like when I said it was the right thing to do it was because Curley would have made his death extremely painful and not right. Also it was not completely Lennie’s fault Curley’s wife was at fault also because Lennie did not want to talk to her and he did not ask to feel her hair so again it was partially Curley’s wife’s fault. So in the end George made the right decision in not letting Curley do it and also having the guts to let Lennie
Martin Luther King Jr. lived from 1929 to 1968. His specialty was being a Baptist minister.
George does not make a wise decision in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. George chooses to kill Lennie because of Lennie’s uncontrollable killing. Lennie does not mean to kill anyone but he is unaware of his strength. George thinks he is doing the right thing by killing Lennie, but really he is making a huge mistake. He believes that he is doing this for the sake of others but his decision if immoral. George was wrong for doing this, he does this for his benefit, and he is guilty.
