The Hobbit is an award winning novel by J.R.R. Tolkien. The book relates a lot to Tolkien’s life and supports modern values.
Tolkien hated war. He and his friends went to war and although Tolkien made it out alive, few of his friends did. He lost so much fighting for what was right, like Bilbo.
Bilbo is the main character in The Hobbit, and if you read the first chapters of the book, you’ll find that he’s not exactly how many of us picture a hero. He’s short, furry, and he hates adventure. But Bilbo was asked to come out of his comfort zone when Gandalf and the dwarves ask Bilbo to help them get revenge on Smaug the Dragon.
Throughout the book, there is a strong theme of good vs evil. Bilbo and the dwarves meet many evil and difficult obstacles
One of the main themes of the Hobbit is Bravery/ Heroism .The novel begins with Bilbo being content who lives in a hobbit hole. Gandalf invites Bilbo on an adventure and Bilbo reluctantly agrees when he wants to embrace his adventurous “Took” side of his ancestry. Bilbo shows great courage and heroism fighting evil and overcoming challenges. An example would be that “The dwarves looked at Bilbo with quite a new respect ,when he talked about dodging the guards and jumping over Gollum and squeezing through as if it was not difficult or very alarming”. (pg. 93). This quote tells of the dwarves response to Bilbo telling them how he escaped goblins and a horrid creature named Gollum. This instance is significant because it is the first major act
Bilbo showed bravery throughout the story in many ways. Bilbo was willing to play the riddle game with Gollem, which could be a good or bad thing. He took the Arkenstone and hid it, then later used it to repay for Smaug’s damages to the town. Bilbo was really brave when he was going to Smaug. He even said to himself, “Going on from this is one of the bravest things I’ve ever done.”
One of the first is the trolls that tries to eat the only to be saved by Gandalf and Bilbo. Another trial the goblins, during a large storm our heroes take shelter in a cave. While everyone is asleep Bilbo notices a crack and goblins spring out of the crack, taking them inside the mountain. During the ordeal Bilbo is knocked out and awakens alone deeper in the mountain. This is his symbolic death. There he is met by a demon like figure Gollum. This represents a descent into the underworld. The ultimate challenge of escaping death. As he emerges from middle earth he is reborn in since. He becomes the true hero of middle
Bilbo is pretty brave because he took risk of pickpocketing the trolls. Now you already know that bilbo is pretty known as a burglar. In chapter two of The Hobbit as bilbo and the dwarves saw a red light bilbo went to investigate and saw trolls. Bilbo took action and tried to pickpocket the trolls, but got caught. Even though he was captured I have to say that took bravery even for bilbo.
“The Hobbit” is a piece of prose written by J.R.R. Tolkien. “The Hobbit” is about a hobbit, Bilbo, that gets picked as a burglar by a wizard, Gandlaf, to go on an adventure. His other members that are going on the journey are the dwarves that are trying to get their mountain back, which is named the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo has changed as a character throughout the first eight chapters of “The Hobbit” in chapters two, four, five, and finally eight. Firstly, Bilbo has changed as a character in chapters two and four of “The Hobbit”.
The Hobbit written by JRR Tolkien is a fantasy novel that follows the quest of sensible hobbit Bilbo Baggins and the thirteen dwarves to win a share of the treasure guarded by the dragon, Smaug. Bilbo's journey takes him from isolated surroundings into more threatening territory. Throughout the novel Bilbo changes dramatically, he develops a greater understanding of the world around him, he gains a sense of adventure and he also develops a desire to live a comfortable life without the thought of others. Throughout the novel Bilbo changes remarkably, one of the most remarkable changes he makes was his greater understanding of the world around him.
As shown in the beginning of the book, Mr. Baggins acts like a thoroughly respectable hobbit, and he does his best to blend in with the rest of the hobbit population: “The Bagginses had lived in the neighbourhood of The Hill for time out of mind, and people considered them very respectable, not only because most of them were rich, but also because they never had adventures or did anything unexpected: you could tell what a Baggins would say on any question without the bother of asking him” (The Hobbit, pg. 4). Initially, Bilbo is a widely respected hobbit, and he never does anything unexpected or adventurous. However, he grows out of this rather limited mindset on the journey; by the end of it, he has proven himself as very strong and capable. After hearing a poem that Bilbo composes and recites on the spot about his journey, Gandalf himself confirms this. Specifically, the passage states, “Gandalf looked at him. ‘My dear Bilbo!’ he said. “Something is the matter with you! You are not the hobbit that you were” (The Hobbit, pg. 326). At the time that this quote is stated, Bilbo has proven himself as a fighter through the countless obstacles that he endures. He truely grows the most during the journey, from a soft, inexperienced
Though Bilbo is not the stereotypical hero, Tolkien prepares the readers for a heroic story of dragon slaying, plundering treasure, and fighting a war. Throughout Bilbo's journey, he is led to other paths that are less predictable, and the impression of Bilbo as a hero can seem less obvious, but his actions and choices are nevertheless magnificent. Clark states and claims that a traditional hero may slay a dragon as revenge for his ancestors to attain fame, honor, or and glory for his deeds, and may finally claim treasure for himself. Bilbo, however, selflessly gives up his share of the treasure and riches to those in need. Though at first glance it seems that wealth, fame, and fortune are the purpose behind this epic adventure, this is not what makes Bilbo the heroic character he becomes.
The Hobbit is about is about Bilbo Baggins going on an adventure and becoming the hero that he needed to be I will be discussing Bilbo Baggins and how he develops and changes throughout the story. I
Wealth and Power. The first portrayal of greed doesn’t appear until Chapter 5 when he meets Gollum, a slimy creature who lives on an island in the middle of the lake. This is where Bilbo Baggins has access to the ring; a crucial object in Tolkien’s novels. Bilbo Baggins gets ahold of the ring from Gollum after stumping him with his own riddles and doesn’t tell the dwarves or Gandolf for a good while, destroying some trust between Baggins and the group. He fools them into thinking his burglary skills are sharp and clever, sneaking up on the group after escaping Gollum, “And here’s the burglar!
Bilbo did not seem to be a hero
By putting his life in danger Bilbo shows a true example of heroism. Though the dwarves were still skeptical of his abilities, they were starting to take into consideration of what Gandalf had said about this little hobbit. Continuing their adventure the group is attacked by goblins where they are eventually saved by Gandalf. Throughout the turmoil of the attacking goblins Bilbo gets lost in the caves and finds himself alone in the darkness. It is in this event when Bilbo finds Gollum’s ring. Gollum was a sickly looking creature that had been dwelling in the caves for many years. Bilbo used his wits to outsmart the creature by playing a riddle game with him and eventually made it to safety. Having Bilbo win the riddle game shows that his smart and witty mind aids him in becoming the hero. Bilbo wasn’t some tough strong stereotypical super hero, he used his smarts to outwit his foes and to triumph over evil. Though Bilbo at the time did not know the power of the ring that he had retrieved from Gollum’s lair (the power of invisibility), it was his heroic fate that he found it as it assist him in becoming the hero of the story. Fate has it that Bilbo will become a hero, but Bilbo also has the courage on top of his fate to get the dwarves out of life threatening situations.
Bilbo may not look or sound like a guy that would be brave be he has surprised us all. Bilbo shows bravery many different ways. He did not want to go on the adventure but went on it anyway to help his friends. When he was asked to do something to help the group even though it may not be done without bravery. “Suddenly a sword flashed its own light. Bilbo saw it go right through the great goblin as he stood dumbfounded in the middle of the rage. He fell dead, and the goblin shoulders fled before the sword shrieking into the darkness.”(J.R.R Tolkien 64) Bilbo showed lots of bravery to fight the goblins and show the group he is a good part of the team. Bravery is that hero trait that really sticks out when we talk about bilbo.
Not only does the portrayal of Bilbo’s character and underlying courage convey his heroism, but so does his sense of ethics. This is what truly makes him a unique, caring hero. While a typical hero’s motive is wealth and fame, Bilbo gave up his share of the dwarves’ treasure to help avoid war between two nations that severely despise one another (the elf and dwarf kingdoms). The fact that he was willing to give up his wealth to avoid war and for the good of other people marks a significant aspect of his heroism and explains why he is “more worthy to wear the armor of elf-princes than many that have
These were all characteristics of the main character - Bilbo Baggins. The process of becoming a hero, which Bilbo goes through, begins with a simple knock on his door one morning. Soon Bilbo is recruited, unknowingly and unwillingly, as a burglar into Thorin’s expedition, by the mysterious wizard, Gandalf. Bilbo is soon called to adventure. This was probably the only opportunity a hobbit such as Bilbo would ever get to go on such an expedition, but Bilbo was very reluctant, at first. Bilbo was good hearted, sacrificing and loyal. He would have given up his life for the betterment of others and this is what made him a true hero. At first, he didn’t want any adventure, but then he saw Gandalf’s faith and belief in him, and he decided to go on the adventure. Bilbo, like a real hero, always made sure that he finished the work he set out to do. Without Bilbo, the dwarves would not be able to finish all the tasks that they wanted to finish. Bilbo was also the reason why the dwarves were still alive. Bilbo saved the dwarves from many different disasters. The disasters ranged from the spiders to Smaug. Through good or bad, Bilbo always showed all the characteristics of a real
