Communion is not always religious and it could just mean a time of sharing and peace. The Dwarves talk of going on an adventure to claim the inheritance of gold under a mountain and slaying the dragon, Smaug that guards it. This represents the quest. The adventure that the Dwarves go on follows the quest archetype. Bilbo is the main character that goes on the quest. The destination is the mountain filled with gold. In 1949, Joseph Campbell discussed the hero’s journey, the foundation commonly used in stories throughout history. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, the hero’s journey narrative is used to tell the story of Bilbo Baggins’s adventure. The novel follows Bilbo Baggins and a company of dwarves as they seek to take back the dwarves’ fallen kingdom. As the story progresses, Bilbo’s character develops and the dwarves perception of him develops through the many trials before the death of Smaug the dragon and the final battle between a variety of mythical creatures. In The Hobbit, the dwarves originally doubt Bilbo’s abilities but as Bilbo encounters more obstacles and succeeds, the dwarves perception turns to one of respect and admiration.
complete an objective. In the hobbit, Bilbo is the quester. He is going to the Lonely Mountains
The Hobbit is a sci-fi fantasy tale about the journey of a hobbit that is volunteered by a wizard to take back the inheritance of the dwarves defeating the mighty dragon Smaug. Bilbo, the hobbit is uneasy about the job at first and has his doubts. He builds courage as the novel progresses. Varieties of archetypes of The Hobbit are going to be pointed out symbolizing the author’s plot.
First for a hero’s quest, we need a quester. The person going on this quest or mission. That would be the little hobbit named Bilbo, Bilbo Baggins. Mr. Baggins was calming making smoke rings on his front porch when a famous visitor came by and sneakily got him involved in a very important mission. His family had a reputation for being calm and predictable people that didn’t go on adventure. But Mr. Baggins decided to say off with the reputation and went on the grandest adventure he will ever experience. So it’s known that there is a quest, but where to?
Throughout one’s life, one meets many different people, some of which seek to harm one, and some of which do not. This is also true for books: A variety of characters are introduced. Characters assume different roles of varying importance, and some seem “benevolent,” while others become labeled as “wicked.” Some guard an item or area, and yet others’ intentions are impossible to discern. These concepts especially apply to The Hobbit, written by J. R. R. Tolkien, which is an excellent example of The Hero’s Journey. The Hobbit showcases many archetypes, including Bilbo Baggins as the hero, Gandalf the Wizard as the mentor, and Smaug the Dragon as the shadow.
The quester in the novel is Mr. Bilbo Baggins. He is on a quest to get to the Misty Mountains so he can help his friend, Thorin, take back treasures that once belonged to him and his family. During the quest, Bilbo Baggins, along with thirteen dwarfs & a wizard, came across many problems and complications. Most of the problems existed between them and other animals, while others were between them and nature. Although the novel told us that the reason for them to go to the Misty Mountains was to claim gold, the real reason Bilbo Baggins went there is to learn more about himself and to realize that he’s more than just a hobbit in a
We are introduced to hobbits and to Bilbo Baggins, a stay-at-home, utterly respectable hobbit with a secret desire for adventure. Bilbo receives a visit from Gandalf the wizard. The next Wednesday Gandalf returns for tea, bringing with him a party of thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield. Despite misgivings on both sides, on Gandalf's recommendation the dwarves hire Bilbo as Burglar on an expedition to the Lonely Mountain, where they plan to recover their ancestral treasure from the dragon Smaug.
First, after the dwarves or the “unexpected party” arrived they sang a song about an adventure that they would ask Bilbo to join and what it was about. The tone of the song was to persuade and inspire Bilbo to agree to go. For example the dwarves sand, “Far over the Misty Mountains cold.” This line was repeated multiple times in the song and caused Bilbo’s Tookish side to want to see the great mountains and go on an adventure. The poem’s content consisted of explaining the reasons to go on the adventure. They sung, “To win our harps and gold from him.” This explains that they must return to their ancestors’ land to win back the riches that were taken by Smaug. There also was a lot of rhyme in this song, Tolkien states the dwarves sing “Far over the misty mountains cold To dungeons deep and caverns old We must away ere break of day To seek the pale and enchanted gold.” This is a great example of rhyme the ending sounds of cold, old, and gold sound alike. The tone, content, and structure signal features about the dwarves. This song showed that the dwarves are very adventurous and brave. Since they must cross back over the dangerous,
The quest itself is fairly straightforward. Bilbo will accompany thirteen Dwarves from his home to the Lonely Mountain. There, Bilbo’s job, as burglar, will be to gain entrance to the mountain so that they may defeat the mighty dragon Smaug and reclaim the Dwarven treasure, which was stolen by Smaug many years ago. Their quest takes them across the world of Middle-Earth, through the Misty Mountains, and the forest of Mirkwood, challenging them at every pass until they finally reach their
Brought together by wizard Gandalf are the 13 dwarfs. They need Bilbo’s help to regain their fortress in the Lonely Mountain as well as their treasure that dragon Smaug has stolen. Initially, Bilbo doesn’t think that he is good enough for the title “burglar” but as he encounters obstructions along the way to Smaug’s cave he proves himself otherwise. In a fantasizing fashion, Tolkien takes the reader on Bilbo’s adventure in route to Smaug.
The adventure begins with Bilbo Baggins, a humble hobbit. Baggins has never left his home town, nor has he been on an adventure, and he doesn’t plan on it. Until one day, there has a knock at his door. This is where Gandalf the Gray comes in. Gandalf persuades Bilbo into going on the adventure with thirteen other dwarves. The dwarves were told that Bilbo was the great “burglar.” Gandalf is the wizard and basically the guide of the dwarves and Bilbo. Now Bilbo is supposed to leave The Shire, Bilbo’s hometown. This is where the adventure begins.
Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit from the Shire, ventures out on a long and treacherous journey throughout Middle Earth in companion with dwarves. The dwarves consisted of Thorin Oakenshield and thirteen others. Thorin comes from a family where his father and grandfather were given the title King Under the Mountain, which refers to the Lonely Mountain. Thorin’s ancestors had accumulated a great amount of wealth, and were prospering in the valley of the Lonely Mountain. However, a fiendish dragon by the name of Smaug had seen this great wealth, and was overtaken by greed. He killed everyone and burned the surrounding villages. He has ever since been guarding the treasure within the Lonely Mountain. This is why Thorin has set out on an adventure to reclaim the
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien is the kind of book that goes well with a steamy drink and a chilly day. With dragons, elves, and goblins, this book follow the adventure of a company of dwarves and a hobbit on their quest to defeat the dragon. The reluctant protagonist , Bilbo Baggins, balances out his rowdy and impatient companions. This book is written in the style of stereotypical fantasy novels yet, there are parts of the book that break the stereotype and keep the reader interested. Normally the protagonist is the first to want to go on the quest but Gandalf is the one to convince Bilbo saying that he is "as fierce as a dragon in a pinch." Using Bilbo's pride, Gandalf manipulates him into agreeing to join the adventure. This book is a worthwhile
