The Hobbit tells the story of a Hobbit by the name of Bilbo Baggins that goes on an adventure. It is a captivating story but is has an amazing amount of archetypes within it. It is truly a work of art. At the beginning of the book Bilbo has dinner with thirteen dwarves and Gandalf. This is an act of communion, but not in the way you think. Communion is not always religious and it could just mean a time of sharing and peace. The Dwarves talk of going on an adventure to claim the inheritance of gold under a mountain and slaying the dragon, Smaug that guards it. This represents the quest. The adventure that the Dwarves go on follows the quest archetype. Bilbo is the main character that goes on the quest. The destination is the mountain filled with gold. One of the first is the trolls that tries to eat the only to be saved by Gandalf and Bilbo. Another trial the goblins, during a large storm our heroes take shelter in a cave. While everyone is asleep Bilbo notices a crack and goblins spring out of the crack, taking them inside the mountain. During the ordeal Bilbo is knocked out and awakens alone deeper in the mountain. This is his symbolic death. There he is met by a demon like figure Gollum. This represents a descent into the underworld. The ultimate challenge of escaping death.
