1177 B.C.: The Year Civilization Collapsed I would like to start with the fact that I was not the kind of person who like to research or even study any kind of history, but since it was required, here I am ended up in this History class learning about civilization. The good thing is all the material that I learned really stimulate the curiosity side of my mind that pushed me to study more how civilization ended, so I chose this book by Eric H. Cline, which I thing is one amazing source of information. Although I googled maybe hundreds of words on each page I went through, I learned a lot about all causes that contributes to the end of the Late Bronze Age in eastern Mediterranean. I really like the way Cline organized the books into ‘acts’.

One shall rise, and one shall fall. It’s a common cycle that’s been prevalent throughout history. It is also a cycle that the world has seen time and time again, the rise and fall of empires followed by the rise of new empires. A perfect analogy would be the cycle of birth, development and death. This process allows the human population to grow and progress. This works the same way for civilizations. When civilizations collapse, they open the door for newer and more modern civilizations to emerge. During the Late Bronze Age, several powerful eastern Mediterranean civilizations all came to a sudden and catastrophic end. A popular belief is the emergence of “Sea People”. However, Eric H. Cline, the author of “1177 B.C.: The Year Civilization Collapsed”, believes a series of unfortunate events was the actual culprit. My critique of “1177 B.C.: The Year Civilization Collapsed”will examine series of calamities that led to the collapse of the Late Bronze Age and how that affected a once stable international community that had been prospering for centuries.
The Mediterranean served as a basin for the early civilizations. The rich history of the
Eric H. Cline’s main theory is that the “sea peoples” weren’t the only thing that made these civilizations come to an end. Before the book came out, many historians believed that the early civilizations collapsed due to the invasion of the”sea peoples”, but Cline was willing to prove them wrong. He states in his book that,”[...] the Sea peoples may well have been responsible for some of the destruction that occurred at the end of the late Bronze Age, but it is much more likely that a concatenation of events, both human and natural -including climate change and drought,[...] earthquake storms, internal rebellions and ‘system collapse’ -coalesced to create ‘perfect storm’ that brought this age to an end,”(Eric H.Cline,

The Bronze Age was a time where a majority of cultures across continents made significant advancements in their metalworking that allowed said cultures to thrive and flourish, and allowed some to even develop extensive written records. It was also the time when the very important metal known as “Bronze” was invented, which was used in said advanced metalworking. Bronze was used a plethora of different ways ranging from beautiful and stunning works of art to new forms of deadly weapons and stronger armors. However, at the very end of the Bronze Age (1500-1200 B.C.E.) Came a time where a wave of sudden violence, despair and darkness descended

One may ask, who are the Minoans? Well they are considered by many Historians and Archeologists to be the first great European Civilization. Some people believed that this was the mythical land of Atlantis. They were located near the Aegean Sea and lands such as Greece, Troy and Asia Minor. One interesting fact is that these people never called themselves the Minoans. There wasn’t any name listed in the history books for these people but the Ancient Crete Civilization. They were known as the Crete Civilization because they lived on the island of Crete which is now part of Greece. It wasn’t until a 19th century British Archeologist, Sir Author Evans gave them the name, The Minoans. He gave them this name because he believed he had found the legendary palace of King Minos. There has been many civilization collapses over the World’s history, but most can be explained in great detail. There are some that are very mysterious and not definitively explained. The collapse of the Minoan people happens to be one of those mysterious collapses which ranks 3rd in the top ten most mysterious collapses of the world and is still to this day debated on what actually caused their demise. There are many factors that go into the collapse of a civilization, but this kind of catastrophe doesn’t just happen in a blink of an eye this is something that happens over a long period of time. This paper will touch on the climate and environment, the time period and culture, how they became
The decline of the Olmec civilization remains a mystery. Researchers believe it was likely to be natural ecological changes and human actions, as well as themselves. Around 400 B.C., the great Olmec city of La Venta, went into decline and dragged the rest of the era with it. Although they declined about 2,000 years before the Europeans came to their region, no one is certain of the exact reasoning for their
The Decline of Western Civilization is among the most electrifying Rock Documentaries of all time, although it was perceived as outrageous and shocking at the time of its production. The documentary is an American film that was produced in 1981 and directed by Penelope Spheeris (Spheeris, 2015). Overall, the film chronicles the L.A. punk rock music scene and captures bands such as Black Flag and Iggy and the Stooges as they dominated the L.A. in the early 1980s and largely depicts life in Los Angeles at the time. A second and a third film later followed representing the 80’s heavy metal scene as well as the lifestyle of homeless teenagers. The American Film registry has preserved the film for the culturally, historically, and sensuous significance.
The Collapse of the Western Civilization makes jokes about how wealthy people disregard global warming. However, it takes something very shocking for them to realize what is happening in the environment. One would think wealthy people would be invested in the environment because they have money and would want to invest their money in keeping the environment safe to live in. However, In The Collapse of the Western Civilization, “The loss of pet cats and dogs garnered particular attention among wealthy westerners” (TCOTWC, Pg. 8). This odd consistency surprisingly opens the eyes of the wealthy and begins to make them realize that global warming is an issue.
On April 28, 1992, Mujahadeen factions stormed Kabul and declared themselves rulers of Afghanistan. What followed is considered the darkest period in Afghan history, especially for Afghan women. However, the Taliban rapidly showed their true colors by declaring Sharia laws that included a complete removal of women from society, strict Islamic dress code for men, and other ridiculous laws such as a ban on books, television, cameras, and radios. Faced with no way to earn a living, Afghan women silently wasted away inside their homes, depressed and suicidal. Many women turned to beggary and prostitution to survive. Under the Taliban, one half of the population virtually disappeared from society, appearing in public only under the shroud of the
The Bronze Ages impacted technology and history culturally. As a piece of evidence, the Bronze Ages had a cultural impact on technology and history is that the Bronze Ages opened up opportunities to the civilization by providing a more stable and larger structure of boats. For example, this idea resulted in the invention of “plank boats”. This piece of evidence supports my claim because the bronze impacted human achievement in a positive way by improving boat’s structures. Another piece of evidence that proves my claim is that bronze helped civilizations provide more defense for themselves because the
What is marijuana? Marijuana, also known as bud, mary jane, grass, and a variety of other slang terms is a greenish gray mixture of dry flowers of the plant cannabis sativa. This drug is only legal in a few states across the United States. Some see this as a non harmful drug because it comes from a plant but this green plant can do serious damage to a teenage mind and body.
Civilizations of the Stone Age were known for their use of stone implements, while the Bronze Age is signified by the use of bronze tools and technology. The Bronze Age is part of the three-tiered classification system of ancient civilizations described by Christian Jürgensen Thomsen: the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. The Bronze Age occurred at overlapping and slightly different times in various parts of the world. This is due in part to the limited availability of copper-tin ores. Certain places, like western Asia, did not see Bronze until trade brought this metal to the region. Notable civilizations during the Bronze Age were the Minoans, Mycenaeans, Hittites, and Egyptians. The Bronze Age dates from 3200-600 BC in Europe and 3300-1200 BC in the Middle East. The Bronze Age collapse occurred around 1200 B.C.E. What followed was a dark age of decreased literacy and technology and a significant reduction in population.
