The civil war was drastic event that was caused not just by one simple action. It was the product of a snowball effect from multiple disagreements and differences between the North and South. The region's, railroads, and slavery are some of the roles played in causing the civil war from 1861-1865. The region in the North was the polar opposite from the South. In document one, it provides the railroads in 1860 which mostly occur in the Northern region going east to west. This implies that transportation was needed more for the North than South, which made North self-sufficient. With the North acquiring transportation routs, it had increased in industrial production. The South was overflowing with plantations, and had eighty-eight percent of slave laborers while the North only with twelve percent shown in document two. Since the South was strictly only agricultural, they had to depend on the North for industrial supplies. In document 3 it said, “matches, shoepegs and paintings up to cotton-mills, (and) …show more content…
Document 3 implies that without slaves, the agricultural production and economy would plummet rapidly. In document 5 it was mentioned that the lives of slaves in the South was almost like a vacation and wonderful. It was said that they can sleep when ever, women do little work, have protection, comforts and necessities to live. With that put, it made many people view slavery as a great thing so it wouldn’t get taken away from the South. In 1859 tensions between the North and South increased from the attempt for a slave uprising. Document 6 John Brown led a retaliation against slavery in the South, but was killed before he could follow threw with his plan. Even though his plan failed South feared that rebellions would rise up against them in the south. The south believed that the north was plotting slave uprising everywhere, which caused whites to murder other whites from the fear of losing
It’s economy relied on the trade and mostly exports with other countries. Cotton was very profitable in the south because they did not have to pay for labor. With the invention of the cotton gin and improvements in textile manufacturing methods. The demand for cotton also made the demand for slave labor go up. The price of slaves went way up after the importing of more slaves from Africa was banned. Slavery was key to their economy. The North was much less agricultural than the south. The north had enough farms to feed themselves but they did not farm for profit like the south. They did not have free slave labor to make more profit. The south relied on agriculture for its economy, which means it is less
The North’s economy was based on textiles, shipping, and skilled trades. Their climate was not suited for the same type of agricultural products that the South produced like cotton, sugar, rice and tobacco. Northern states like New England manufactured and shipped goods like guns, clocks, plows and axes (page 399). One reason for the South’s dependence on slavery is because their economy relied on the existence of slave labor. For example, the cultivation of cotton depended largely on slave labor, with 75% of the crop grown on plantations,
There were many reasons why the south got so angered by the north that they decided to secede from the union. One of the reasons was because of the differences in economy and the protective tariff between the north and the south. Another reason was because of the Election of 1850 where Abraham Lincoln was elected president. Because of these reasons, the south seceded from the union later leading to the Civil War.
Slavery was one of the biggest controversies in the United States for many years and many amendments and compromises were made because of it. It began with 3/5ths compromise of 1776 which declared all slaves were equivalent to 3/5th of a man. Then it progressed to the Compromise of 1850, which included 5 bills and admitted California to the United States as a free state, demonstrating how hard it was to please both sides. Next came the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, otherwise known as Bleeding Kansas, a mini civil war regarding whether Kansas would be a free or slave state. These events along with many others began to create a large divide between north and south, ultimately leading to the biggest event of all, the Civil War which started in 1861.
The United States faced many economic differences between the north and south. The north was the most successful mainly because it had a commercial/industrial economy. The north’s value of manufacturing is very high compared to the south (Doc. 1a). They supported tariffs, in fact they "voted the President additional powers to enforce collection of the revenues" (Doc.6). Significant investments for internal improvements
This means that since the north didn't have rich soil or nothing like that they decided to go in a different direction than the south did to make money. Most of the north made their money by factories but some people did so by slaves. This is my second reason as to why the south seceded from the union, which started the American Civil War. My third reason as to why the south seceded from the Union, which started the American Civil War is because the north had faster transportation than the south. From Document #2 it shows the Economic differences between the north and the south.
Many people think that the Civil War was fought only because of slavery. Could other things have contributed to the cause of war? The Civil War was a four year battle between the Union and the Confederacy. There were many events that may have helped lead America in the war. These events include: economic issues, cultural and social issues, and political issues.
At the beginning of the war, the South’s economy was almost completely agricultural and dependent on the sale of crops, mostly cotton. Even though the south produced the majority of the country’s cotton they had no manufacturing capabilities. The north, on the other hand, was a commercial and manufacturing based economy. Despite their use of slave labor, the South was unable to keep up with the North’s growing industry, which caused its economy to come to a halt. The South relied on imports from the North to meet their needs, and with the country divided they were no longer receiving the resources and services they required. The Confederacy had hoped to be recognized and supported by Great Britain and France during the war. They were confident
The country was broken into two prominent factions: the north, and the south, that adhered to two different lifestyles. On one hand, the north was favored by climate that was indicative to small scale, subsistence farming that provided enough for a family. The north, in addition to small scale farming, was also the center for industrialization and infrastructure within the country. The north’s economy was based on manufacturing and shipping, leading to more industrialized cities and factories. Also, the north had abolished slavery since the early 1800’s, and thought of slavery as an evil that was to be eradicated.
A Civil War is a battle between the same citizens in a country. The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the independence for the Confederacy or the survival of the Union. By the time Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1861, in the mist of 34 states, the constant disagreement caused seven Southern slave states to their independence from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America. The Confederacy, generally known as the South, grew to include eleven states. The states that remained devoted to the US were known as the Union or the North. The number one question that is never completely understood about the Civil War is what caused the war. There were multiple events that led to the groundbreaking, bloody, and political war.
The civil war was mainly sparked by tensions between the north and the south. Both sides rarely agreed on topics and could never make a compromise. Slavery was a big reason for the start of the civil war, but the causes don’t end there. Although some may say that political or economic reasons started the civil war between the north and the south, political reasons were the real cause. This is because of important decisions made by the government, and the south seceding.
The Civil War was caused by many several pressures, principles, and prejudices, fueled by sectional differences, and was finally set into motion by a most unlikely set of political events. From economic differences to political differences all the way up to cultural differences, the North and the South opposed each other. These tensions were further increased after the western expansion of the United States. By the early 1850’s a civil war was known to be likely coming soon.
Many causes led to the Civil War. This all happened around the mid 1800s. It was a conflict between the Northern and Southern states. Both sides had their own view on slavery, and their separate views caused contentions between the two. Both had different views on whether to expand or stop slavery growth to the West, or have slavery at all.
The Civil War happened due to the many differences between the North and the South. For example economic, social, cultural and political differences. These all helped lead America to a Civil War. But to an extent, the most important cause was the fact there were many disagreements with states' rights versus federal rights.
In May of 1856, Congressman Preston Brooks of South Carolina entered the nearly empty senate chamber and beat Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner with a cane. Brooks felt violated by Sumner’s “Crime Against Kansas” speech, which provoked the retaliation. This attack spread the idea that violence might be able to solve the problem of slavery. In October 1859, abolitionist John Brown, led a violent attack. He and his band of 21 men and attacked the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. They hoped to spark a slave rebellion that would end slavery, and in John Brown’s words, “purge this land with blood.” Brown’s attack was one of the final causes that sparked the Civil War.
