As our sixth president of The United States, John Quincy Adams once said, “So great is my veneration for the bible, that the earlier my children begin to read it the more confident will be my hopes that they will prove useful citizens to their country and respectable members of society.” A significant amount of people around the globe read portions of this book every day. The bible demonstrates how each and every person is born with rights and dignity. It teaches mankind that all humans have individual value. For example in the book of matthews the verse, “ And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself”, encourages mankind to treat everyone equally. A primary example of those influenced from the bible's teachings about equality are abolitionists who helped abolish slavery. Although president Abraham lincoln, was not a christian he did not deny any scriptures, “That I am not a member of any christian church is true; but I have never denied the truth of the scriptures .” President Lincoln did believe that all humans entitled to rights and that all humans have equal self worth just as the bible proposes, for he helped abolish
In Lincoln’s speech and MLK’s letters, I noticed many quotes taken from the bible. In MLK’s letter he went a step further and incorporated not just his own faith and what he believed, but other faith and religions as well. In the Second Inaugural Address, Lincoln said, “Both read the same Bible, and pray to the same God”. He then went on and stated from the bible “let us judge not that we be not judged”. This comes from Matthew 7.1, and basically what is meant is that the we should think of ourselves first, as individuals
Abraham Lincoln says “Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.” but the good book says otherwise. “Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ” ― Ephesians 6:5. Now why would he go against god? The bible clearly states Slaves should obey their masters, why would he try and change what the bible said? He doesn't know what he’s in for, he may be the leader of our country, but god will always be the leader of the world, Lincoln has no power against god.
During the 1600 to 1870 tension grew heavy between the Northerner’s and the southerner’s because many Northerner’s believe that slavery was morally wrong and it should be abolished because it was unnecessary economically due to the strong manufacturing potential. While the Southerners were gracefully for slavery because of the cheapness, and needed people who they could rely on and had total control over to do their hard labor job to improve their economy. Around the 1600 to 1870, slavery erupted in the south part of the country. It was a system that was based on the principle of rich southerners buying, selling, owing African as slave to improve their economy. Due to the new system it brought tension between the northern and southern part
What a fascinating read, thank you for sharing. In my opinion, this article tells us that Lincoln was a knowledgeable man not easily persuaded by others. Instead of acting a certain way because it was expected of him; he took the Bible’s teachings and personal beliefs to establish his moral code. It seems to me he highly respected God and The Bible, and didn’t necessarily agree with the church. People tend to believe their religion or way of life is better because that is all they know. I’m not saying everyone is like this, many research and enjoy learning about other religions and cultures. I assume Lincoln was that kind of ma; he didn’t seem quick to judge because someone was different, he strived to learn more about them in order to
When studying the Bible, it is important to understand its origins; for me, I I have become enlightened, but troubled after learning about the subject. I found the unit, as a whole, very important and a positive experience for me. But, with this comes much apprehension and confusion as to the strength of the Bible.
This book review is from the readings of Biblical Inspiration by Howard Marshall. The book is published by Regent College Publishing located in Vancouver, and British Columbia published the book in 2004. The book is braces around the interpretation of the Bible, and the inspiration of the Bible in our lives of today. There are many questions that are brought up the book, and these include: Is the Bible infallible? How do we interpret the Bible today? is its inspiration believable in and biblical criticism believable? All of the different opinions on biblical issues equivalent to these bring up issues and questioning within the community. It is Marshall’s goal to try and produce a statement that is concrete of what the Bible says in our lives today.
The Bible’s verses concerning slavery contradict other verses in several places when discussing slavery and the treatment of slaves. Ephesians 6:5-9 instructs masters to “give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.” Galatians 3:28 states that “[T]here is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” Again, the Bible illustrates that slaves were equal to all others, stating “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, … whether we be bond of free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.” Abolitionists undoubtedly used these quotes in order to put an end to slavery.
Lincoln was always against slavery. He never thought of slaves as better than white Americans, but still thought they should be considered as equal to the law. Lincoln agreed with the founding fathers' phrase “All men are created equal,” which he also thought that it should have applied to black and white people. “The Declaration and the Constitution enshrined these rights: the right to ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’. In essence, to Lincoln this implied the right to be free, to enjoy the fruits of his labour, to have a family and to acquire property.”
From John Winthrop to Martin Luther King Jr., the Bible has shaped much of our government and history. As the best selling book of all time that is often referenced in politics and daily life, both liberals and conservatives argue that it is imperative that students know about the text in order to better understand intellectual conversation. Many literary references to the text are also found in Western culture; therefore, it is
What do the civil war and modern day America have in common? A lot more than you’d think, actually. Abraham Lincoln’s timeless speech of unity and equality remains just as relevant today as it was 150 years ago. Now you may ask, “What does that have to do with me?”. You’re about to find out.
The abolitionist movement of the 1800s fundamentally changed the American culture, values, and legal system. The successes of Barack Obama, Jesse Owens, and Maya Angelou can all be attributed to the efforts of powerful women that came before them and fought for their rights. Using biblical scripture to their advantage, abolitionists were able to convince Americans that God had created mankind equally. Prominent abolitionist such as David Walker and William Lloyd Garrison used American’s strong religious affiliations and dedications to reveal the hypocrisy of the popular interpretation of the bible and the actual text itself. The movement centered itself around the most glaring question: were all people created equal by God?
The Bible contains sixty-six books, written by approximately forty authors, over the course of two thousand years. God created and loves humans despite their rebellious attitude towards Him, and God wants to reunite humans to Himself (Poythress, 2008). The Bible is a record of the sinful rebellion of humans and it still declares God’s love for humanity through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ. This foundation prepares the way for Jesus Christ to fulfill God’s entire promised covenants.

The Bible consist of many text and scriptures, that is considered to be a source for many people. This source is used as an ethnic guidance. The way humans live and the formation of society depends on their relationship with God and religion as a whole. There is a trace of religion in many aspects of humans’ lives, whether it is acknowledged or not. With the understanding of the Bible, humans follow the Ten Commandments because it serves as a guidance on how to be a good human. If one breaks one of the ten commandments, then it shows disobedience towards God. Human beings and humanity’s relationship with God depends on the quantity of the Bible they follow. It is certain that humanity follows most of God’s words because many parts of society can be traced back to the bible. The story of Adam and Eve is a foundation explaining how and why society has such great gender divide. The issue with male dominance can be explained through the story of Adam and Eve.
