John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr formed The Beatles in 1960, quickly becoming the most influential rock band of all time ("The Beatles"). As far as innovations into the music industry go, The Beatles introduced more than any other rock band of the 20th century. Not only were The Beatles the most popular at what they did, but they were also the best (Unterberger). Rooted in skiffle, beat, and 1950s rock and roll, the Beatles dabbled in several other musical styles including hard rock, Indian music, pop ballads, and psychedelia, sometimes incorporating classical elements and eccentric recording approaches ("The Beatles"). According to George Harrison, “The Beatles saved the world from boredom.” This is true. They impacted the world not only through their music, but also by the social change they excited. In March 1957, John Lennon and friends formed a music group at Quarry Bank school and called themselves the Quarrymen. Fifteen-year-old Paul McCartney joined as a rhythm guitarist shortly after he and Lennon met that July (“The Beatles”). A bit later, a friend of McCartney, George Harrison, joined the boys as an additional guitarist. As these new members came, some founding members left. After Harrison’s entrance into the band, the Quarrymen decided to change their name to the Silver Beatles, but they dropped “Silver” after a couple months, becoming The Beatles by 1960 (Unterberger). In August of 1960, The Beatles invited Pete Best to join as a drummer when he auditioned just before they left for tour in Hamburg, Germany. Best did not last long in the group with Ringo Starr replacing him in August of 1962. Brian Epstein, the group’s manager, dismissed Best under the direction of the rest of the members ("Pete Best").
