For many years, women have been fighting for equal rights as men. The fight started years back, and continues to happen today. Many of the rights woman have now would not have been possible if it was not for the many women who stood up for what they believed in, and did not give up on the movement to make things right. Although, the fight for equal rights is still active, the freedom women have now compared to back in the 19th century is very different.
The first women’s right gathering in the United States was held in July 19-20, 1848. The main women to organize this convention was Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott. Stanton was known to have a voice that people listen to. She not only fought for women’s right but also to abolish slavery. In 1863, Stanton and Susan B. Anthony created the Women’s Loyal National League. (Women’s Right Movement) Following that, the women’s movement created its first national organization, the American Equal Rights Association. They were hoping to gain voting rights for all citizens. Stanton was a leader and a great motivational speaker. She urged women to get themselves and education and pursue their goals. Some of these differences can be seen on the work field. Men still have an advantage in certain work fields, and get paid more for doing the same job as a woman. This issues are still to this day being fought for. Another problem women now are fighting is their right to do with their body what they want. Abortion being the main concern when it comes to having rights over one’s own body. These rights that were fought for years back, are still to this day a big concern today, because to this day there is people that are trying to take them
