I chose this topic because it is something I know nothing about. While I do know some about the planets, I do not know how they were discovered. I think it is fascinating how before all of this technology people invented so many things and devices that helped us be where we are today. William Herschel didn’t start out his life and career interested in space and the stars. He started as a music teacher and musician. He was in his 30s before he started asking questions and looking at the stars. I think Herschel’s motivation came from wanting to learn more about the world around him and reading. While Herschel was still a musician, he read “Opticks by Robert Smith”1. In the books last few chapters, Smith talked about “Telescopial
During and between World War One and Two, many extraordinary people were discovered and these people had to do unbelievable things in order to achieve success. William Stephenson was one of these people. He was a pilot, prisoner, inventor, businessman, spy and senior representative of the British Intelligence Agencies.(3) He was a man who has been recognized many times, with not only a statue in Winnipeg but the medal of freedom and the Medal of Merit, the highest civilian honour given by United States president Harry. S. Truman.(3) Stephenson was the second non-American to receive the award. Multiple books were also written to honour and explain his life story and accomplishments. Stephenson did many amazing things to deserve all of these
Herschel just happened to be studying the stars between 10-11pm. What he did not expect was to find a planet on that fateful night. Herschel thought that what he had spotted was a big star, but then decided that it was a comet. However, he quickly realized that this was no star, it was much more! In this situation, technology made all the difference. Without these high-powered magnifiers, it would have been easily forgotten. Once he formed a hypothesis, how tried to figure out what the planet was not. It was much larger than the other planets. Once he realized that this was an actual planet, he wrote a letter to his colleague about it. This was an exciting discovery for 1787! It was the first planet to be discovered in a more modern
Technology and science has a major impact on our daily lives, especially cell phones and the Internet. People everywhere take for granted the technology that they have access to everyday, and they would not know what to do without it because they rely on it for almost every aspect in their life. Christopher Columbus would have made it to India if he was able to utilize the technology society is so accustomed to
“Perhaps most important for the science of astronomy is that the discovery of Uranus began the search for other undiscovered planets in our solar system. It was the beginning of a second phase in the discovery of planets, during which Neptune and Pluto were discovered.”
“Economics is not an exact science. It's a combination of an art and elements of science. And that's almost the first and last lesson to be learned about economics: that in my judgment, we are not converging toward exactitude, but we're improving our data bases and our ways of reasoning about them” (Paul,1). Despite Paul Samuelson’s accomplishments, his life growing up was not as ideal as a child would like. Paul was born in Gary, Indiana on May 15, 1915 to parents Frank and Ella Samuelson. Frank Samuelson was a pharmacist, who had financial difficulties after WWI. Thus, the family was forced to move to Chicago, Illinois. Enrolling at the early age of 16 to the University of Chicago, on his first day of college he claimed he was “Born as an
Meleager was a brave and noble argonaut, and was the son of King Oeneus of Calydon and Althaea. He has accomplished many significant things in his lifetime. In a matter of 7 days of his birth, The Fates decided his future. Atropos said that once one of the sticks in the fireplace was totally burnt, he would die. Considering that, Althaea took the stick out of the fire place and hid it.
William Herschel was a musician and an astronomer. The motivation that drove William Herschel to the discovery of Uranus was his obsession with astronomy and the heavens. He charted the stars with a telescope he built himself, he then discovered a “comet” which really was the planet Uranus, but he initially didn’t realize it. He noticed the “comet” had moved and decided that his annotations on the position of the “comet” had been written down incorrectly. Herschel wanted to know the dimensions, and position of the “comet”. He carefully measured the location and diameter of the comet for some time and discovered its journey as parallax to “our side of the sun” on a daily basis. In 1782 Herschel finally called the comet his planet. The knowledge
In March of 1781 William Herschel, a musician and amateur astronomer discovered what would eventually be called “Uranus.” He discovered what he initially thought was a comet, while looking for what he called double stars. He ended up finding Uranus as it passed by one of the stars he was looking at. He recorded is in a journal, and after a few days looked for it again. He was able to see that it was moving and that it appeared to have an orbit. He contacted some friends of his that were astronomers and gave them the work that had done and wanted to them to explore it further than he could. They ended up finding the same thing and also classifying it as a comet, probably a comet called 1770, and congratulating him on his discovery. It wasn’t
On August 25th 2012, Voyager 1 became the first human-made object to enter interstellar space going further than anyone or anything in history. The 70s were a great era for technology, there were many great inventions. For example the floppy disk, the floppy disk may be a largely obsolete technology at this point but its legacy is huge. Although floppy disks are not in use anymore, they will always be a part of history.
The microwave oven was discovered due to Percy Spencer's mistake. In the story, "How A Melted Bar Of Chocolate Changed Our Kitchens" the final line states "All thanks to Percy Spencer and his mistaken snack. " His mistake made a huge discovery that is very useful to people today. Not only that, but it also provides proof that mistakes can be key to discovery. Another, accidental discovery was gravity.
As science has progressed over the years, there have been many forms of exploration and discovery to find the answers we seek. One of the best examples are the Apollo space mission that were done by legendary astronauts and scientists. There have been many individuals over the years that wanted to know what was in space, but scientists now have the technology to experiment machines that can easily answer the questions of the universe we have. An article by Ronald J. White talks about how these missions have been accomplished for more than 40 years and how these events have made advancements on how people are able to travel through space when discovering the worlds that lie beyond our planet. After so many years of research, we have found so
Technology has had a major impact on human successes over the past million years. Possibly the single most influential event in the public’s interest when it comes to science and technology, would be the Apollo II mission. The space field has had a major impact and also has provided us with the ability to learn new technology and advance in our latest technologies. Since the first man walked on the moon, science has advanced at a rapid pace; nuclear power, television, jet
Thesis Statement: With the advances in technology, scientist have opened the door to the discovery of Pluto,
We have came up a lot with all of the new technology that we have created through out the years. There is a lot of technology that is very good and it is helping us out on a lot of things and why? because when you know how to use technology appropriately it can help us out so much and can even keep us safe from all the dangers like car accidents. Technology can be fun as well I'm not going to lie we can use technology with our family all the time for example, watching a family movie or playing video games. We can have fun with our technology but the thing is that we have a little to much fun with it and get carried away and start using it all of the time. Ther are people that spent time on their phone until 3:00am and it just takes away from our sleep. But other than that technology is helping us out in discoverying new thing in not just Earth but also other plants. We can discover a lot of things with all the new technology we
I will choose the appearance of the automobile to become the first example of the application of technology to
