Poe is well known for his mysterious horrific writing. His poetry and short stories have inspired many people and their writings. His style of fictional writing has widely contributed to the science fiction genre. Poe had a rough life because his writings were the only thing that earned him a living. However, through the hard work and suffering that Poe went through he became a successful writer. Poe was born on January 19, 1809. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Poe had it hard as a young child. His father (David Poe Jr.) and mother (Elizabeth Hawkins Poe) were actors and died when Poe was about 2 years old and it resulted in him living with John Allan a tobacco merchant. However, he was later sent to boarding school in England where he studied for 5 years. This broke Poe and made him miserable. Because of his miserableness and broken heart, Poe enlisted in the Army. He claimed that he was 22 years old and that his name was “Edgar A. Perry”, although he was actually 18 and gave out the wrong name. While in the military he published his first book called “Tamerlan and Other Poems”. After 5 years of being enlisted in the military, he had confessed to his commanding officer about him not being who they thought he was. Poe was only discharged after many attempts of contacting his foster father (John Allan) who finally agreed on Poe’s discharge for him to get a meeting with the Military Academy at West Point. Before attending West Point Poe moved to Baltimore with is aunt (Maria Clemm) and her daughter (Virginia Eliza Clemm). When he went back, another book while there called “Al Aaraaf”.
