Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD, is a complex developmental disability. I happen to have two nephews with autism, one who I am very close to and interact with a lot. A child is usually diagnosed with autism during the first three years of life. It is a result of a neurological disorder that has an effect on normal brain function, and affects the development of the person’s communication and social interaction

It affects the way a person understands and responds to the world, how they hear, see, feel, sense, perceive and interpret everything around them. This may affect how they eat, sleep, dress, work, spend leisure time etc. They are likely to have repetitive behaviour

Autism is a varied and complex disorder which can affect individuals in a number of ways. ASC affects not only the individual with the diagnosis, but their whole family - parents, siblings and others close to them. Below are examples of how ASC can affect different people:

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a name that is used for a group of developmental disorders. Children with Autism have great difficulty with bonding emotionally with others, they find it hard to make eye contact with others, communicate their feelings and express themselves to the people who are closet to them. Autism effects the brain which inhibits these children to interact, communicate, and concentrate. A child with Autism will display behavior such as, repetitive behavior, rocking, flapping hands, repetition of words, and will want to always arrange objects.

Autism is a form of neurodevelopment disorder in the autism spectrum disorders. It is characterized by impaired development in social interactions and communication, both verbal and non-verbal. There is an observed lack of spontaneous acts of communication; both receptive and expressed, as well as speech impairments. A person diagnosed with Autism will also show a limited range of activities and interests, as well as forming and maintain peer relationships. The individuals will display limited interests, which are often very focused and repetitive. He or she is likely to be very routine oriented and may show behavioral symptoms such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, aggressiveness, and self-injurious behaviors.

Autism is a mental disability that develops as the individual grows and develops, it changes the way they view the world and how they interact and understand people, it affects each individual differently due to it being a spectrum disability meaning that there are many forms ranging from atypical autism to high functioning autism this makes it very hard to fully understand it due to a lot of differences. There are around 1 in 100 people who are classed to be on the spectrum, that equals to around 700,000 people within the United Kingdom and it affects more men than women, some people with autism will be able to function within society with slight support from the family, school and work whereas some will need specialist support throughout their whole life this is because there is no cure for autism their parents/ carers have to try to get the care and support they need to overcome challenges that people without autism take

Autism is a brain disorder that can affect a child’s development in the sense that they would have trouble with verbal and nonverbal communication, repetitive behavior, or social interaction in general. Autism can be detected in children ages two to three years old and 1 in every 88 children in America are diagnosed with autism yearly.

Do you ever wonder why some autistic children act differently from others? Autism Spectrum Disorder affects three different areas of a child's life; it affects social interactions, communication skills, and their behaviors and interest. Every child is different and has their own way of expressing themselves (Autism Response). Some children may have better social skills than others. Autistic kids do not know how to express themselves so they do so through their different behaviors. Many autistic children are even nonverbal and will make different noises to communicate. It is very easy for a child with Autism to get upset because of their sensory, emotional, and cognitive difficulties. Sensory problems, emotional difficulties, and uneven cognitive abilities are all symptoms of Autism. Some more than others, but these are the most common symptoms of Autism (Autism Spectrum Disorder). For example, many of Autistic children can not express themselves like others who do not have the disorder. In many instances, it is very frustrating for both the child and whomever they are speaking to. If the child doesn't babble, coo, gesture (point, wave, grasp) by 12 months, doesn't speak not one single word by 16 months, and doesn't say any short 2 word phrases on their own by 24 months old they may have autism (Autism Spectrum Disorders Health Center). Autism has affected many different families, in many different ways. More families with boys than girls, mostly because girls many of them may go misdiagnoesd or undiagnosed all together. Autism is tested for around age five unless the child is showing symptoms earlier than age five.

Autism is a very complicated and diverse disorder. There’s many different variations of it and it can affect a lot of things. The movie did a good job at describing autism and how it affects the family as well. Many times the burden of taking care of the person falls on the family. Arnie had mostly mental disabilities. He had a mindset of a 5 year old, he even liked to play games. Autism is a fairly common disorder and 1% of the world population has autism (“Facts and Statistics”, 2015). It’s a disorder that people should learn more about and get training if around an autistic person. It may be overwhelming, as it was for Gilbert at times. Arnie was always happy and he didn’t have a care in the world.

Children and adults may exhibit repeated body movement such as hand flipping or rocking, unusual responses to people or attachments to objects and resistance to change in routines. They possibly experience sensitivities in the five senses sight, hearing, and touch taste and smell. It is important to know that children that have autism do not communicate with words effectively, rather they do communicate with behaviors. These behaviors could be repetitive and unacceptable to those around because harm can be done to the autistic or those around. Since the autistic child cannot communicate freely without having difficulties, the behaviors usually displayed to pass their feelings across include; kicking, scratching, screaming, crying, biting, hitting, hair pulling, head butting, spitting, singing, pinching, pushing etc. It is important that you understand these behaviors and also know why the autistic usually engages in them. Autism is a developmental disorder that some people are born with, but if it is not treated, they could have it for the rest of their lives (Allman 8). It is very difficult for people with autism to express themselves, they may make odd noises or laugh in inappropriate times (Baldwin 16). Some symptoms are that they are not talking at the age that they should be. This is very common in children who are autistic because autism affects their senses, such as talking and hearing. They also may not respond to their name when it is called because their brain does not know that their name is being called. Sometimes when they are picked up, they may stiffen their body or be upset because they do not realize the person is trying to comfort them. Flapping hands, rubbing certain things, and constantly spinning objects are very common for people with autism because it helps their sensory issues (10). Autism may affect social skills, communication, senses, and behavior therefore, people with autism may not always function normally (4).

Autism affects society in many ways, and a majority of these effects come from the miscommunication about what autism is and why more people are being diagnosed with it. It could be argued that this issue does not affect anyone who does not know someone with autism, but currently, it is very likely that everyone knows someone with autism. Another way society has made this disorder harder to deal with is how it tries to group all people with autism together.
