Houston Food Bank Research Paper

I met with Maria Thompson and Mark Paxton from the Community Food Bank in regard to their site improvements. The Food Bank is requesting CSDC administer a contract with Avila Construction for their site improvements to San Felipe Rd frontage and parking lot improvement that access their building. The contract amount is $57,461.The Food Bank Board has approved the expense and repayment in full to CSDC if we choose to administer the contract. A repayment agreement between the Food Bank and CSDC would need to be drafted prior to approving any contract.

Specific Purpose: To inform the audience of the workings of the Houston Food Bank and the concepts discussed during the course which were demonstrated through our volunteer experience.

It was difficult to read that countless millions of federal dollars and many of our country's most successful efforts to halt the spread of childhood hunger and starvation have recently been withdrawn. And as a result, this problem of childhood hunger is not getting better but is actually getting worse. The most recent estimates compiled by the USDA in 1999 indicate that 36.2 million Americans live in food-insecure households, which means that their access to adequate and safe food is limited or uncertain. This too is very disturbing information.

Families in cities rely on general stores and health food stores to obtain food products. A severe shortage of food throughout the country would raise potentially difficult questions for families. Where are they going to get food now that stores

Additionally, Feed America is present during national disaster recoveries, providing much needed emergency food assistance to victims and communities. Their services afford adults a chance to break

Describe the program’s Theory of Change: The Salvation Army food pantry believes that though their programs that their clients would eventually in the long run become educated on resources and knowledge that would help them overcome poverty. The food pantry provides monthly food services and other resources for clients. From those their hope is to provide low income families, individuals with one hot meals for families of 4-5 people a month. They also hope to offer other recourses that could be hindering families from saving enough money to buy groceries every month. Their end goal is to improve food insecurity in the community.

The family receives food stamps, or SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) but the $172 worth of assistance isn’t enough to feed the family of five for a month. They have to subsidize what they can’t buy with food stamps with charity from food stamps, and even have to decide to let certain bills go unpaid to put food on the table. Another challenge faced by the Dreiers and families across the country facing food scarcity, is that the food often available is usually unhealthy. Food banks usually give away processed or canned food that is filled with salt and preservatives, so even when a meal can be scavenged is usually has little nutritional value. Hungry American’s have to often times decide on unhealthy pre-prepared or processed foods because they are more easily accessible and more affordable.

On August 4, 2015, Vivian Cu and I chose to volunteer at the Second Harvest Food Bank located on 700 Edwards Ave. in New Orleans. Our Tuesday morning of service started at 9AM and ended around 11:30AM. In preparation for my first time at Second Harvest, I wore comfortable clothes that were easy to move around in and that were possible to get dirty in. The man in charge of all volunteer services, Vince, quickly gave me my duty for the day. There is a huge case of canned goods and my job was to put as many canned goods as possible on a conveyor belt. The conveyor belt would carry these cans to many aisles where other volunteers would put them into smaller boxes that had to weigh from fifteen to thirty pounds. After packaging these boxes, Second

Hunger is a big social issue facing America today. According to (“Do Something.com”) 1 out of 6 people face hunger in the US. Also 49 Million Americans Struggle to put food on the table. America is the best country in world, we shouldn’t have so many people hungry. Many people have thought of fixing this problem but one company has found a way to help fix this problem, this company is Feeding America. They have been giving people food since 1979. They’ve helped out 46 million Americans. ( feedingamerica.org )

“Feeding America is a non-profit organization created by John Van Hengel in the 1960’s” ("U.S. Hunger Relief Charity | Feeding America®," 2015). He was a retired business man who would volunteer at a local soup kitchen to feed the hungry| (Feeding America®," 2015). “He came upon the idea after a women was desperately looking for food to feed her children”, “she suggested to him there should be a place to store unwanted food instead of throwing it out for trash so the hungry can go and pick up the unwanted food”| (Feeding America®," 2015). Feeding America does not sell products it provides services. It’s an organization which provides the less fortunate and low-income families with free food through nationwide food banks across America| (Feeding America®," 2015). Van Hengel created his first establishment in Phoenix Arizona, and named it Saint Mary’s Food Bank| (Feeding America®," 2015). After several years Van Hengel along with his team the organization “distributed over 275,000 pounds of food to those in need”| (Feeding America®," 2015). The current political situation in the United States has shaken people to the core. What once was a stable country has quickly disrupted into chaos. This has lead many people to wonder what the future might hold for those who are already struggling to get by. But it doesn't have to be this way though. With careful planning, Americans can regain some control over their lives. And the best place to start is with their food supply.

In conclusion, hunger in America is at an all time high due to poverty and the economy. The increasingly high number of starving children has gone up over the past years and needs to be stopped. There are government programs set up to help stop hunger in American, such as, SNAP Food Stamps and WIC. We can get involved by volunteering with Feeding America or other non-for-profit organizations set for feeding the hungry. Food donations and monetary donations have always been a great way to help out for those who don’t have the time to donate.

Encouraging food aid organizations to offer nutritional education and grants of food or farming assistance to those who are unaware of good nutrition techniques and have limited food supplies.
