KWASHIORKOR. INTRODUCTION Kwashiorkor is a medical condition that develops due to an insufficient intake of proteins. This disease was first identified and described in the 1930”s in Ghana. The word kwashiorkor originated from the Ga language widely spoken in many parts of Ghana. It literally means “one who is physically displaced.” Also called protein energy malnutrition (PEM) or malignant nutrition. This malnutrition disease is common in areas where there is drought, famine, areas with limited food supply and places where there is low level of education (people do not understand the importance of a proper diet). Unfortunately it is more common in poor countries especially in times of drought or political unrests and it mainly affects …show more content…
However children in this condition never reach their full potential for height and growth. However during treatment calories should be given in form of carbohydrates, simple sugars and fats so as to provide energy then followed by proteins without omitting vitamins and minerals. Due to lack of appetite eating can cause problems therefore food must be reintroduced slowly. Many malnourished children develop intolerance to milk sugar therefore this is supplemented with enzyme lactase for them to tolerate milk programs. Infections may require treatment with antibiotics. PREVENTION Kwashiorkor can be prevented by: Eating of a balanced diet without forgetting that food must be stored properly. Make sure diet has enough carbohydrates, fat (preferably 10% of total calories) and protein (12%of total calories). Encouraging food aid organizations to offer nutritional education and grants of food or farming assistance to those who are unaware of good nutrition techniques and have limited food supplies. CONCLUSION Kwashiorkor is a very serious disease. Getting treatment early generally leads to good results. However, neglect and inappropriate treatment can result into complications which are serious and life-threatening such as permanent mental and physical disability, shock, coma among others. Therefore let us keep in mind the proverb that says “Prevention is better than cure” if we want to have a peaceful and
The word means poor nutrition and malnutrition is a broad term referring to both under-nutrition and over-nutrition.
The influences of underlying health conditions can result in the need for specific nutrients as well as influencing what people are or aren’t able to eat.
DKA is presented with three major physiological disturbances which are hyperosmolality due to hyperglycemia, metabolic acidosis because of the buildup of ketoacids, and hypovalemia from osmotic diuresis. Diabetic ketoacidosis is caused by a profound deficiency of insulin, its most likely occur in people with type 1 diabetes, inadequate insulin dosage, poor self management, undiagnosed type 1 diabetes, illnesses and infections. In type 1

Increased mortality rate (incidence of mortality of malnourished patients at 1 year being nearly 30% in 1 Australian study8)
Like any country, there are a variety of health concerns. About 50 percent of the children are malnourished-phsycially and mentally. When people experience malnourishment, often times it can stunt people’s growth as such a young age. Some illnesses are heart disease, kidney damage, and anemia, which can lead into adulthood.
Also, if caught early enough, the less likely there will be residual brain damage and memory impairment. Treatment for WKS is immediate administration of thiamine. Thiamine doses differ from patient to patient depending on severity of the WKS. Oral thiamine supplements are not effective in severe cases because of the liver damage and disrupted thiamine metabolism. It usually is administered intramuscularly. Taking the thiamine may not completely reverse all damage, but can prevent the progression of the disease. Also, a few lifestyle changes should be made, including a complete diet and refraining from heavy

Making sure nutritional needs become a part of any lifestyle requires understanding exactly what the body needs to obtain and maintain optimal health. The recording food intake for three days provides many areas of nutrition that I am more aware of that before; this includes protein, carbohydrate, lipid, and fiber intake needs. Meeting the nutritional needs of the human body helps to ensure a healthy lifestyle that is free of disease and illness.

The lack of growth and development begin to occur when the body does not take in enough calcium. Calcium is very important part for the body to function because it has the function to keep bones strong and without calcium the bones will become weak and break easily. Also, it will lead to stunted growth in the body and the person will not be able to grow properly. In addition, malnutrition can occur when children or the poor community does not get enough to eat and is requiring the need of nutritions and other minerals. Suffering from malnutrition will cause extensive amount of disease to manifest in the human body. Also, it will be harder for the body to fight off disease and people will become more vulnerable to catching different type of diseases. Pedro A Sanchez stated, “The death rate from diseases such as lower respiratory infection, malaria, and measles…Undernourished people infected with HIV/AIDS develop the full symptoms” (1). The poor population is longing for the access to healthy food in order to prevent terrible disease like this from occurring. It is very hard to treat and prevent these different variety of disease from happening without having the money to get the proper care and medical attention.
Breastfeeding is the single most effective nutritional strategy for protecting infants against infections and diseases. Three mechanisms have been proposed by which human milk constituents protect the infant from infection. Two are based on the immunologic constituents of human milk and the third is its high nutrient value. (National Academy Press, 1992) In LDCs the health of many children are significantly impaired, sometimes permanently, by the lack of nutrition they received during the breastfeeding phase. Breastfeeding requires a mother to have a specific diet. In the industrialized countries of the
