My experiences and accomplishments throughout high school may qualify me to be accepted into NJIT Honors College. I have learned so much about civil engineering and computer graphic design through my internship at InfoTran engineers. I created models of intersections that would later be used by real surveyors in New York City. If accepted into Honors College, I would be able to use my skills that I learned here to design and create different things to be used in the real world. I have also had experience with web page design through a class in high school. I learned HTML code, css as well as photoshop. I have hands on experience on how to create the bones of a website using HTML. I can use this experience in the honors college because it gives
Our modern education system expects teachers and, especially, students to abide by certain guidelines and rules. The goal of setting certain standards upon their students and faculty is to teach them limits and values. One of those regulations created by school institutions is the honor-code, which prevents students from plagiarizing and cheating off one another. Susan Greenberg, a journalism instructor and writer for the Washington Post, exposes the usage of honor-codes in colleges as an unnecessary restriction. Meanwhile Lynn Morton, an English professor at Queens University of Charlotte, acknowledges the beneficial effects honor-codes establish.
I have challenged myself all throughout high school with Honors and AP classes, but I have gone beyond the classroom to further challenge myself. For instance, in the genetics-based research program, I was tasked with many scenarios in which I had to use my problem solving and reasoning skills to make the appropriate decisions for many laboratory experiments. Additionally, I had to interpret the results of the experiments in context with what I was attempting to prove through the experiment. Within my high school, I am also part of the National Honors Society through which I help the community’s schools with tutoring sessions. TCNJ’s Honors Program will allow me to continue pushing myself to the peak because of all of its challenging courses and opportunities. All throughout high school I have been challenging my academic capabilities and I wish to continue to do so as I continue to TCNJ.
The Honors College at ECU should admit an exceptional students such as myself because I consider my education to be the paramount element for my success in the near future. Although I am a student athlete I never forsake my education for my sport, track, because I know that my sport will only take me as far as a scholarship to ECU but won't be of much help after that. As I consider my education above my sport, I tutor my team mates in math because that's what they have a hard time understanding. Not only do I tutor but my teammates and I also volunteer around the community by raking leaves and shoveling snow during the fall and winter which helps us out if they would like to support the team with a donation. I like to hold myself to a higher
This Colloquium was important for us, the students of The Honors College, to attend because it granted us advice and knowledge in regards to an issue which is incredibly relevant to us, consent and campus safety. We as college students are a vulnerable population since, according to the information provided to us by the speaker, 11.2% of college students, graduate, and undergraduate, in America will experience some form of sexual assault. This means that sadly we must be prepared to deal with situations like those and to do so we must be informed about what to do if such a situation presents itself. The speaker also made sure to give us advice on what to do when we are not in such a situation ourselves but are witnessing it. Her suggestions
"Tomorrow is the first day of what I will become." I wrote this in my diary the night before my first day of college. I was anxious as I imagined the stereotypical college room: intellectual students, in-depth discussions about neat stuff, and of course, a casual professor sporting the tweed jacket with leather elbows. I was also ill as I foresaw myself drowning in a murky pool of reading assignments and finals, hearing a deep, depressing voice ask "What can you do with your life?" Since then, I've settled comfortably into the college "scene" and have treated myself to the myth that I'll hear my calling someday, and that my future will introduce itself to me with a hardy handshake. I can't completely rid my
Though the Williams Honors College had a tremendous impact on my undergraduate days, I am very excited about how it will impact my future. The Honors College has deepened my commitment to the University of Akron and the greater Akron community. Though neither of my parents are from Akron, they moved me here when I was two years old. Akron is my home and my time at the University has secured my roots. I am appreciative of everything the Williams Honors College has given me, and I cannot wait to give some of that back to the University of Akron and the Williams Honors College in the
During the NJIT open house, I had the opportunity to visit The Honors College, and my first impression of the program left me in awe, I could feel the environment supporting a strong education through a non-enforcive way. From that moment, I envisioned myself participating in the Honors College: taking on the rigorous academic course and being able to do research early in my college career. My academic background matched many of the Honors College students’ backgrounds, such as partaking in a variety of rigid classes. In fact, a few of them are from my current high school, Mcnair Academic, which is a magnet-school with a tough academic standard that requires a college level of commitment from the students. From an academic perspective, the
As a high achieving honor roll student, my college education has always been a priority from the time I was young. Florida has become my new home and I would love to attend a university in this wonderful state. I moved from Colorado in May of 2016 and have become more dedicated to school ever since attaining my straight A’s in high school credit classes. Academics are always on the forefront of my mind and it would be quite endearing to finally have all my hard work pay off and be granted a scholarship.
5. What has happened in college that reveals your intelligence, service, or capabilities? If you changed your major, tell me when and why?
A lot of people choose to look at the challenges in their lives that they have faced and explain how they have overcome them. I am choosing to instead look at the successful times in my life and share what they have been, because I look forward to adding to this list, hopefully while I am attending Muskingum University. At the end of my Sophomore year, I was accepted into the Cosmetology program at C-TEC of Licking County, and this was just the start of a successful pathway. Towards the end of my Junior year, I was chosen to be apart of National Honor Society (which I stupidly rejected, a mistake that will never be made again) and continued to be on Honor Roll and Merit Roll throughout the years. I was also the outstanding Junior Cosmetology
As a senior at Dixie Heights High School, I have had experiences both in school and in the community which have shaped me as a person and prepared me for the Honors Program at Cincinnati State. During my senior year, I have taken dual credit classes at Northern Kentucky University. I currently have a 4.0 GPA at NKU and have earned 12 credit hours in the fall semester. I will be taking 16 credit hours of classes at NKU in the spring semester. The training I have received from Northern Kentucky University would be beneficial to me in the Honors Program since I have already experienced a college environment and have proven that I am prepared to handle the workload that comes with expanding my education.
My grades are not accurate predictors of my potential success in the Honors College. During my freshman year, I had no cares academically. I was just in school to waste time, and I never thought about the future. That next summer, I got a job just so I could have something to do. My boss became one of the biggest influences in my life. I instantly decided I wanted to be a manager like him. I set my eyes on my goal and have been working studiously to make the most out of my life. My test scores are somewhat accurate predictors of my success - my ACT scores were satisfactory, but I am not a very fast tester. All three times I have taken it so far, I have not had enough time to finish my reading portions or to revise my essays. My class ranking,
First of all, Congratulations on your acceptance to the Honors College!! Undoubtedly, the Honors College is an experience you would never forget, either because you really liked it or because you had to study day and night to achieve your goals. My best advice: make friends. In my opinion, this is an experience that you cannot do alone. Without friends, professors and people that you could rely on this two years could turn out to be very hard, plus your friends here will turn out to be like your family. Second, as a new student you are going to start hearing about all the organizations and clubs you could be a part of, however always remember that quality is better than quantity. Third, try to do your best in every class you take… hard work
Beating at the heart of the Southern Oregon Honors College community lies a close-knit community that focuses on deeper discussions between students and a student-interest driven content with programs like Take the Lead Projects and Pick and Choose Activities. Small communities, like the honors college, have been a major part of my life since middle school. This is one of the major reasons why I want to be a part of the honors college community. I want to immerse myself in an intellectual space where people take responsibility for their actions and communicate with others in an honest, compassionate way while in a small-scale setting. I think a lot of successful communities do this. When members are comfortable being open about what they want from their community and communicate that in an empathetic way, a deeper bond is created and people can delve into their creativity more because they do not fear judgment.
This course like my entire first semester of university have provided me with both many challenges as well as taught me many lessons not only for my university career, but for the rest of my life. As I reflect back on the semester, I recall telling myself at least once a week that I wanted to drop out of school, followed by many breakdowns, crying fits and calling defeat. The past few months, haven’t been at all easy for me, I have thought many times I wasn’t intelligent enough to be in university, I was disappointed with some of the grades I received and I was constantly engulfed in a swarm of stress. Despite all these tough times, I have had many good one’s as well, I have made new friends which are now integral to my everyday life and I have enhanced my knowledge to a new degree. Some of the many lessons that I’ve already learned in my short university experience include how to manage my time, the importance of meeting deadlines as well as the continuous struggle of balancing the various different facets of life.
