Homicide Unit Investigation
Initial Steps After arriving on the scene of a possible homicide, there were evidence of the victim’s home being ransacked which presents the factor of a robbery gone wrong. The victim was reportedly home at the time of the robbery which might have posed as a threat for both the criminals and victims. Following the arrival of the police, onlookers swarmed the victim’s home. The investigating team surrounded the house with “Caution-Do Not Enter” tape. This helped to eliminate traffic leading up to the house which possibly contain vital evidence. Sketch artist and photographers were called in to capture images of the environment. In order to apply Locard’s principle, there were limited amounts of authorized personnel

Missing furniture includes two televisions, a radio set, and also jewelry and money. There are numerous amounts of stab and bullet wounds on the victim. These wounds indicated there was force between the victim and the suspect. These elements present the factor of a homicide turned …show more content…
Forensic science technicians are vital on a crime scene because the collect and analyze physical evidence. Evidence is one of the most important factor of a crime scene because this puts in investigator a step ahead in finding the suspect of a crime. Crime scene specialists help to collect and preserve evidence in a crime scene. There are rules concerning the collection of data in order to preserve its natural state. For example, “all non-movable items, such as fingerprints, at a crime scene should be processed at the scene using gray powder, black powder, or black magnetic powder. Polaroid 665 black and white film loaded in a Polaroid CU-5 camera with detachable flash should be used to make one-to-one photographs of prints which do not readily lift.” (Schiro, n.d.) Also in the case where there is a computer involved, if it is turned on, it must not be turned off until all the information is properly collected and stored on a file for later use. DNA examiners usually search for anything that could possibly contain DNA. These include fingerprints, hair, blood, semen, bite marks, and dead skin found under fingernails. Tests can be done to determine whether the DNA is the victim’s own or the possible suspect. The coroner’s role is to certify the death of an individual and if unknown, to gain the identity of the victim. These agencies
While on scene I observed blood droplets in the kitchen, dining room, Living room, laundry room and a long hallway leading into the residence from the backyard. Once outside of the residence I observed further evidence of a physical confrontation, including additional blood spatter and droplets scattered throughout the yard near a burning fire where it appeared, due to multiple empty alcoholic beverage containers the subjects had been drinking.
The role of a Forensic technician varies in many different directions and the process for each evidence material is a huge part in the criminal justice system. What Forensic Technicians do is the base and a huge impact on everyone else’s job, including the investigator and the labs. Forensic technicians analyze, collect data and preserve the evidence found at the scene, whether its bloods, hair, clothing etc. Forensic science technicians help investigators untangle the circumstances surrounding a crime, accident or other unexplained incident. Forensic technicians scour the scene for evidence suggesting a possible suspect, murder weapon or cause of death, they report their findings to the detectives in charge of an investigation and also perform
This is an ADD report to Officer Harrell’s #3441, PC 664/187 – Attempt Murder report.
Upon arriving at the crime scene located at the dazed Ave of sunset and lilac, I discover what appears to be double homicide. I arrived and was briefed by the head officer who was the first person at the scene so he was able to explain what happened, an officer assisted my technician and I. The time the incident was 6:54 AM on November 9th, 2011. The neighborhood has had a multiple amount of past incidents following these events and to what seem to be a quiet community with a larger amount of elderly and young newlyweds was more ignoring to the danger of the area. Two officers informed me that there was a robbery in progress that turned into a Homicide. As supervisor of the crime scene the first thing I am going to observation from see the body I can tell it was
When you see the shows such as Homicide Hunter or Killer Instincts many times my mom and I try to figure out who is the murder. Most of the time my prediction is right because of the details my mom misses, and putting together all the clues. From then on I realised I had a gift, even if it was I was just watching television show. That is what sparked my interest the criminal justice area. I have contemplated the career choices that would best fit my interest leaving me with Homicide Detective and Criminologist. While both careers deal with criminal justice they differ greatly in the type of work environment, pay, skills/education.
The person that collects the evidence varies depending on the severity of the crime; a major Crime scene Examiner and a Crime scene Officer. A Major crime scene Examiner collects evidence and records the scene for serious and complex crime scenes, a Crime scene Officer however examines less serious and less complex crime scenes (Forensic Services Department September 2014). Maintenance and protection of evidence integrity & evidence continuity Evidence continuity is the
Little is known about the decision-making processes of homicide detectives or crime scene investigators. Within the lines of this paper I will be responding to a homicide scene at a convenience store/gas station at 3 a.m. Within this store I will find a deceased victim with an apparent gunshot wound in the chest along with eight different visible items where I have to address the different process I will use at the scene on each item listed. I will attempt to tell you where each item will be process and if possible can it be processed at the scene where this gruesome homicide took place.
This includes analyzing blood and body fluids and removing tissue samples for later testing. They help law-enforcement with investigative information by collect medical evidence, such as trace evidence and secretions, to document sexual assault; and to recreate how a person received injuries. Typical test performed or order by the forensic pathologist may include; X-ray, blood screening, urine analysis, and toxicology report. When finish the information gathered can
Therefore, DNA is one of the most common things a forensic technician looks for. Forensic technicians investigate crimes. There job is to look for physical evidence that will be collected and later analyzed. While working on an investigation the forensic technician may seem to be looking for a specific sample. It may be a blood sample or even a single drop of saliva. In some cases, clues may lead to a single fingerprint left behind to solving a crime. The suspect assuming he or she has wiped away all traces that would lead them to the crime scene. Never realizing what the suspect might have left behind. This may have seemed irrelevant to the forensic technician. Who is taking part in searching the crime scene. DNA left behind such as a strand of hair leads to a suspect. To the result it may be found in the carpet, or in any other type of clothing.
They perform chemical, serological, or physical analyses on evidence from different types of crime scenes. The Technicians bring the evidence back to the forensic laboratory for analyzing, the evidence can be anywhere from chemical substances to bullet casings and guns. “Forensic Science Technicians reconstruct crime scenes by carefully studying information gathered by investigators and conducting scientific tests on physical evidence. For example, lab technicians may look at photographs of blood splatter patterns and conduct ballistics tests on bullets found at the crime scene to determine from which direction the shot was fired.” They use different programs to study the biological analyses of the evidence, ranging from hair follicles to blood.
After doing their job in he crime scene, the evidence they took will be taken to the forensic scientist. Crime scene investigators will look at the photographs and connect their theories based on the crime that occurred. The forensic scientists will also examine the victim’s clothes, while the medical examiner will analyze the victim’s body for more clues and evidence that they may find and they will all be doing this in the crime lab. The things they may find could be hair, fiber, semen, blood, another person’s DNA, bruises and many more. After the forensic scientists
On April 05, 2016 at approximately 1518 hours, I was dispatch to 2004 Pine Street in reference to a death investigation. Upon my arrival, I met with Detective Campbell who was the lead Investigator at the scene. Detective Campbell stated that the victim neighbors reported a strong smell coming from the victim’s (Cortiz Lazarz) residence. The neighbors called 911 and Officer Volk was the first responded officer on scene. Defective Campbell and officer Volk stated that the victim located on the living room floor, fazing the south from the residence. Detective Campbell requested I process the scene for evidence and documentation.
Crime scene preservation should be the most important step to any first responder. This protocol should continue to be followed by anyone who processes the scene. From the moment the first responder arrives at the scene, he/she should exercise a pertinacious attitude to insure that curious onlookers and personnel who are not involved in a task related to the scene, remain outside the cordoned
Google defined Crime Scene Investigators as, a specially-trained police officer who is dispatched to a crime scene to analyze and document evidence. (1) In my perspective, he/she is a person who has an important job of securing and exploring the details and leftovers of a crime performance. CSI jobs are not as easy and over dramatic as in movies, they involve arranging and searching of specific details through minutes and hours so that prosecutors can figure out a convincing case and find the criminal of the crime beyond a shadow of a doubt. Numerous activities and procedures must be supported in precise and prearranged methods, such as classifying the time of death in a murder case, lifting fingerprints, gathering and documenting trace evidence such as hair or fibers, examining guns or explosive devices and documenting the location of objects and bodies in the crime scene. It’s a well-known fact that the job is not for the faint at heart; on the other hand, for those with the privilege mental behavior, the job can be extremely inspirational and pleasing.
The photographer that is present at the crime scene is responsible for making one picture worth a thousand words. Photography plays an integral role in the documentation of physical evidence found at crime and accident scenes as well as during forensic autopsies. Forensic Photographers are among the first crime scene technicians to arrive at crime and accident scenes. They walk through a scene to obtain an overview before they begin taking photographs. Forensic Photographers apply their technical skills and their knowledge of anatomy and forensic requirements to take photographs that convey the information that crime scene, criminal, medico legal, or forensic investigators need documented. These
