I have held several positions throughout my life. The knowledge and experience that I have acquired has played an intricate part in molding me into the person I am today. For most of my life I have always been driven to achieve. I am always setting goals for myself, long and short term and stay committed to achieving these goals. I feel that you must hold yourself accountable to your commitments and pursue what drives you. To say that you are going to accomplish something is one thing, but staying committed and actually achieving the goal is a true testament of perseverance. Commitment is not just a word, it is a chosen way of life. Sometimes this comes with many sacrifices and hard work that can only be surmounted by inner drive and …show more content…
One of my most important goals is having the knowledge and skill set to make a difference. The ability to analyze security related problems and develop sound solutions can only be gained through education and experience. This degree program will provide me the ability to project my thoughts regarding security concerns with a rationale yet credible solutions that are supported by experience and knowledge obtained from this higher level of education. The Master’s Degree program will enhance my ability to analyze weaknesses in our national security and develop problem-solving skills that are required to be successful in today’s ever-evolving security within FPS and the Department of Homeland Security. The development of the Interagency Security Committee (ISC) that has established security standards for our government facilities is invaluable. If ISC standards would have been implemented in the past, many horrific tragedies would not have occurred at our federal facilities. It is imperative that these standards are improved upon to meet the security demands of the future. This can only happen through continued education and commitment to enhancing our security. The completion of this degree program will provide me the necessary skills to improve all aspects of security not only as a commander within FPS but in all areas of DHS. I will have accomplished my goal, but more importantly strengthened a nation that relies on keeping one-step ahead of a security breach within our critical
Bellavita Christopher is the Director of Programs for the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security. Also, from 1998 to 2002, he was the planning coordinator for the Utah Olympic Public Safety Command. The author focuses on the fact that homeland security faces a variety of threats. Many factors such as the economy, weapons of mass destruction and a lack of moral compass pose potential challenges to homeland security (Bellavita, 2009). The terrorist attacks such as the one in Mumbai, the economic meltdown, the disaster on the borders remain potential malefactors to the U. S. homeland. And to no surprise, the threats are gradually transforming into a more complex tactics. Bellavita takes aim towards a realistic assessment
George Washington University is the number only University who offered a program that spoke to my interest. I am applying to the Master of Professional Studies in Security and Safety Leadership because I believe my analytical and critical thinking skills will be enhanced and the program expectations will be higher than in my to think effectively and efficiently. I believe that this program will provide me with the competencies to manage and succeed in the Homeland Security field. This program will provide me with the proper knowledge and skills I would need to excel in Criminal Justice.
Reviewing the Department of Homeland Security's five core missions, I feel that preventing terrorism and enhancing security should be their priority. Ultimately securing our boarders, enforcing immigration laws, cyber security, and ensuring resilience to disasters are all crucial missions; but as Secretary Jeh Johnson stated in the 2014 2014 Quadrennial Homeland Security Review (QHSR), "Preventing terrorist attacks on the Nation is and should remain the cornerstone of homeland security." Terrorism is an ever-changing force, continuing to educate and inform society are factors to facilitate success. That's why even in the DC area the "If You See Something, Say Something" is marketed throughout our public transportation networks and tourist
The Homeland Security Degree was established in 2007 in response to the nation’s growing homeland security needs and issues. “The degree was created to educate persons on how to secure boarders, secure waterways /seaports, prepare to prevent and respond to both man-made and natural disasters, provide counter terrorism, cyber terrorism and employ the latest technological
How did 9/11 lead to the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the breaching of civil rights?
As a Chief executive, the president’s main duties are to enforce and execute laws however they see fit. The President signs executive orders directing law enforcement agencies, including the agencies that enforce immigration laws, that has “prosecutorial discretion”– the power to decide whom to investigate, arrest, detain, charge, and prosecute. The Agencies may develop discretionary policies specific to the laws they are charged with enforcing, the population they serve, and the problem they face. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) may decide how to prioritize its resources in order to meet its stated enforcement goals that are set by the President. With executive unilateral powers the president, drafts policies without and sometimes over the objection of Congress or the courts. The President can design policies regarding the immigration matter without approval of Congress, he can simply follow the former presidents’ footsteps on immigration laws. I am making the argument that U.S. President does have too much unilateral power.
The master of arts degree in homeland security program will provide me a deeper understanding and stronger foundation in homeland security by delving into the core elements of homeland security. This increased enlightenment will have a complementary result of better preparing me to be a knowledgeable, senior level homeland professional. As a veteran with 32 years of honorable service in the United States Army, my time spent in the military has given me a greater understanding and knowledge of the current threats that face our nation. I believe this program will provide me the opportunity to expand my understanding of the nature and sources of threats facing our social, political, and economic systems. In addition, this program will help me
In this research paper, I am going to discuss the plan that the Department of Homeland Security has set forth for the years of 2012-2016. This plan outlines the entire vision of the department to essentially accomplish their missions and goals. The plan consists of missions varying from border security to cyber security. We must not forget the men and women on the front line working hard to ultimately secure and provide safety for the United States of America.
Homeland security is also the degree I am perusing. Fortunately our degree in Homeland security does not have a comprehensive track or an applied research track. The track you are taking in terms of electives are similar to me accept I am taking HM 505: Planning for WMD and mass causality crises, instead of HM540: Crisis Intervention. After getting through this class we start getting into our core classes and the journey truly begins.
The Department of Homeland Security in the U.S. is mandated to deal with terrorism problem that has a long history in the U.S. Terrorism has been a threat to U.S. security since the 1800. Terrorists continue to use powerful secret communication strategies and unexpected tools to achieve their intention in the U.S. soil. For example, the 9/11 terrorism attack that killed the highest number of American citizens in history succeeded because terrorist used hijacked passenger planes to perform the attack (Lutz and Lutz, 2013). Although the most notorious terrorism activity in the U.S. soil was performed by Islamic extremist, several other groups among them black militancy, anti-liberal, anti-government, Jewish extremist, fascist extremists, and Palestinian militancy among others have been reportedly caused a terrorist activity in the U.S. in the past and their continued existence still remain a major threat to the U.S. security (Lutz and Lutz, 2013). The counter-terrorism policy administered through the Bureau of Counterterrorism aims at partnering with local security agents, multilateral organizations, non-state actors and foreign governments to defeat local and global terrorism. The policy employs high level of coordinated strategies in securing international partnership to document and monitor and act appropriately to Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) as emerging organizations that coordinate international terrorist
There are many different elements that contribute to an effective homeland security policy. Our current policy and programs have never been formally evaluated for their success, yet they are still fully funded each year regardless of whether they are making a lasting impact in deterring terrorism. I would strongly recommend changing our current homeland security policy in a few aspects. These changes can be made regarding the setup of the Department of Homeland Security as well as the evaluation of the programs to determine their impact.
David Levy claims that, “chaos systems do not reach a stable equilibrium; indeed, they can never pass through the same exact state more than once.” Therefore, “we cannot learn too much about the future by studying the past: if history is the sum of complex and nonlinear interactions among people and nations, then history does not repeat itself.” In other words, arguing that history does not play a pivotal role in planning for the future. So in the context of Homeland Security, one must hone in on the complexities of the future threats. At first I was very against this train of thought, since I have always been told to learn from the past to help prepare for the future. However, Nieto-Gómez makes a compelling argument that, “the Homeland Security environment should be understood as a chaotic system where long term planning is very difficult and forecasting is in reality impossible” (Nieto-Gómez, 2011). More so, as David Levy makes the argument that history will not repeat itself. I would argue that this can be applied to the way terrorist think and act, always trying to develop new and more creative ways to instill destruction and fear. That is why the use of “forecasting based planning” is not a very useful tool when preparing for future
Retirement seems so far in the future that it is hard to grasp. Doing this project has been a really long and tiring process because there are so many aspects to take into consideration when planning for your future, and most importantly, retirement. I am not sure exactly what I want to do in life in terms of a career, but somewhere in the Criminal Justice field. As of now, I hope to make a career within the Department of Homeland Security. More specifically, I hope to work as an intelligence analyst. This jobs goal is to collect, manage and share any important information to make sure we have a safe a secure homeland. I understand that having a career in the Federal Government does not pay the highest wages, but they do have excellent benefits.
The idea of securing the nation’s borders and securing the safety of the citizens has been a major topic since the beginning of the nation’s existence. There have always been means and procedures for it but it was never defined to the point it is today. The Homeland Security Department is a fairly new program which is constantly improving and adjusting in accordance to the threats that may arise. In the attempt to secure the United States, homeland security has become paramount and a lot of emphasis is being provided so as to ensure the safety of the borders and the citizens of the United States. So one must ponder what the difference between homeland security and homeland defense are since they both tend to mean the same
2014-The 5 goals of Homeland Security “efforts are to: 1) prevent terrorism and enhance security, 2) securing and managing our borders, 3) enforcing immigration laws, 4) securing cyberspace, and 5) ensuring resilience to disasters.” (Department of Homeland Security, 2014).
