Bollywood is one of the striving industry in India and its film is widely accepted all over the world. However, even though its been able to appeal a variety of audience rather than just the norm of the Indian population. Through this paper I would like to explore how censorship has affected what is presented in the Bollywood media.
In contrast to Bollywood censorship and the hiding of sexuality, Hollywood became liberal in terms of sexual content after the Commission on Press freedom was passed, in 1947. Hollywood films went through an immense decline because the directors and actors portrayed films about the World War II (Hollywood as History, 2006). Since their rights were not secured, they would be sent to prison for offensive movie scripts. However, in 1952 Hollywood was granted the First Amendment protections for the freedom of speech in the movies by the Supreme Court and in 1953, to avoid political issues in the movies, Hollywood made a comeback with a sex comedy, called “The Moon IS Blue” (Hollywood as History). Hollywood relished the freedom however, words such as ‘virgin’ and ‘pregnant’ were not allowed and considered to be indecent (Hollywood as History, 2006).
Hollywood became privileged on exhibiting sexual content from 1952 and Bollywood went through an extensive difficulty in settling the movie contents to match the rules of the Central Board of Film Censors. A large difference between the two has been how censorship rating has quickly declined in

Although gangster films were a hit with the mainstream audiences, it wasn't with the Protestant and Catholic religious groups. This sparked the beginning of the new movie code, that would be introduced. In 1934 with the Movie Industry still plummeting, the Motion Picture Production code was put into action. The Code was founded in 1930 and was made to censor films and create guidelines for production studios to adhere to. The code was never carried out until 1934, when the Production Code Administration was founded. They required all films and even scripts, be pre approved before going to theaters.
The magazine article describes the stark contrast in the portrayal of female sexuality between pre-Code and post-Code movies. Pre-Code movies are flagrantly sexual; although some contemporary film critics believe that women were simply embracing their sexual freedom through these pre-code films, the marketing for many of these brazenly sexual films often included derisive comments from males, suggesting that the intent of overt sexuality in films was more crude. Post-code films often used screenwriting strategies to stay within bounds of the Code. Denby argues that this censorship actually created a net benefit for women, who were given stronger personalities and more interesting plot lines instead of simply being sexual objects. The article suggests that censorship led to the inception of the screwball comedy genre, which was forced to “create sex without sex.”

As an entertainment medium, film was revolutionary: all of the sudden, vivid snippets of life could reach a mass audience. This is most seen in television programs. There are different disputes as to whether it more harmful than beneficial .Many proponents think that the use of it will establish a balance in what is shown in T.V shows, while opponents are criticizing on the foundation of threats and violations that it poses to people’s right to speech.

This paper will cover censorship in film with its main focus in the United States. It will cover the progress of film censorship and how it has varied throughout the country as well as state to state. The reader will discover how film censorship has changed with society and can be a resemblance of society at a certain point in time. Important cases and lawsuits will be covered as well, enabling the reader to understand why and how certain laws were created and questioned.
The Hays code was put in place to dispel the threat from the government to censor their films. In the 1915 U.S. Supreme Court case “Mutual Film Corporation v. Industrial Commission of Ohio” it was ruled that movies were not protected by the first amendment. As such, some of the already existing foreign films were seized on obscenity charges. The industry adopted this code as a means of avoiding direct censorship by the government. This code was followed and helped regulate the industry from 1930 to 1968, and it banned violence, sex, profanity – and interestingly; same sex or interracial relationships. There was controversy over same sex and interracial couples during the time, but the fact that such things would cause a movie to be censored are a concept to speculate
During the early years of Hollywood, films had very few regulations on how they can be made. From 1922 till 1930, people were outraged at Hollywood that they have no rules on how they should make films. In response, religious groups were editing movies for their local communities to make them save for their standards. Eventually the government started to talk about enforcing rules that would censor Hollywood movies for the public. To stop that from happening, Hollywood enforced their own rules called the Motion Picture Production Code or the Hays Code.

In order to establish a group that censors televisions and movies, the Motion Picture Producers Association (MPAA) was created. Each rating category has a description of the appropriate age at which to view the film and whether or not a parent’s accompaniment is necessary. The Motion Picture Producers Association assesses a film and gives it a rating of G (general audiences), PG (parental guidance suggested), PG-13 (parents strongly cautioned), R (restricted), or NC-17 (no one under seventeen admitted). As the film industry has been changing over time, so have the ratings. More and more parents are having issues with the ratings that some films are issued. “The man behind the ratings, Jack Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), says the system works just fine. ‘Parents use it and trust it, and that's why it's lasted for almost 35 years,’ Valenti says. ‘It warns parents in advance about what's in a particular movie, but ultimately, parents are responsible for the behavior and conduct of their children — not the ratings system’ (Hansen 273).”
In the contemporary context, when one tries to analyze the idea about women from previous decades being an audience and not the crew of a film industry, one wants to question and ask: why were women only an audience or, actors? Maybe there were some culturally held values and beliefs with respect to their contexts? However, with the passage of time, cultural and professional values improved. Technology began to improve and so did the mind-set of professional groups along with the audiences. Film industry has had an impression of providing first entertainment and, second education. Hence those working for the films might have had hurdles in choosing working for films as their career or vocation. At different times in the history, women in different cultural contexts have worked for certain film industries. I want to explore the idea about women and their talent in the film industry. Since I am primarily a viewer of the Bollywood industry and an occasional viewer of the Hollywood cinema, I want to compare the cultural and professional values of those who work for films in different settings. Since the course readings provided information with respect to certain cinema contexts, I wanted to add some ideas providing a comparative analysis of the women talent in diverse film settings.
