Imagine yourself being in a crowded room and your hands and feet are in shackles. There are a variety of noises surrounding you from cries, weeps and screaming. How did you get here? Then, you open your eyes only to realize that it was a dream, or was it? They are enslaved in their mind. Pressured to purchase and live the same lifestyle according to everyone else’s opinions. Have you ever wanted to dress a certain way but deciding against it because of the criticism that might receive from wearing it? People’s judgements seem to be the deciding factor in how a lot of decisions are made today.

One way they coped was they found comfort in food which is widely known as soul food. In Fredrick Douglas’s Opie book Hog & Hominy: Soul Food from Africa to America he talks about the food pathways from Africa to America. He reports
When the master ordered a pig slaughtered, his family ate pork chops, pork steaks and pork tenderloin wrapped in bacon. The entrails, feet, hide, and head were all that was left over. Yet very little went to waste because enslaved Africans learned to eat everything on a pig, “from the rooter to the tooter!” This included pig’s feet, skin and intestines, chitterlings. In society now, Black people continue to eat this comfort food, even though studies show it can be unhealthy. (32)
After slavery was abolished African Americans still retained the same diet as they did in captivity. The African American diet contained fatty foods, pork and processed foods. If slaves had the resources to healthier alternative food options, then they would not have to be confined to bad food choices. In 2015, some African American people cannot afford expensive healthier food choices so they are forced to choose a less nutritious
