From time to time, it is closed for public because of massive repairing works. $87 million dollar funds were raised under President Ronald Reagan who wanted to restore the Statue in 1982 (Statue of Liberty History, 2017). The design and construction are looked upon to be one of the greatest technical achievements and a blend of and engineering in the 19th century (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, 2017). The Statue of Liberty is made of thinly pounded copper sheets cast over a steel framework (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, 2017). It was a collaboration effort by the sculpture sculptor Frédéric Bartholdi and engineer Gustave Eiffel. Bartholdi used a modern technique to construct the statue and created her with a steel skeleton. However, the statue is sculpted in a classical style and with a modern role with a torch in her hand (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, 2017). The iron framework and the complex piece of construction plus the use of concrete in the base shows a unique combination of engineering, architecture, and art. The curtain-wall type construction is flexible enough to support the skin, and the torch uses electricity to light (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, 2017).
