Countless Italian-Americans viewed the new world of America as their new home. Many of those individuals viewed Christopher Columbus as the hero who provided them with new world to them. The statue of Christopher Columbus now sends a powerful message to whomever views it. The statue displays a strong sense of pride from all Americans and especially from Italian-Americans. Christopher Columbus, to them, is as an example of freedom, freedom that they themselves are also entitled too.

At first glance the monument signifies the importance of respecting the soldiers of the United States. The statues on top of the monument are made of gold. The statues themselves represent the soldiers. The soldiers, in my opinion, are depicted demi-gods as they stand tall above the park. The monument also acts as a water fountain. Perhaps, with the addition of the water fountain, it was meant to symbolize freedom. The soldiers that were on the ship were there to protect the rights and morals of the United States of America. I think this was one of the main points the makers and funders of the statue was trying to convey. In the early 1900s, we have to remember that there were no tall buildings or skyscrapers around central park. This monument was probably the tallest object that could be seen from a distance, reassuring the citizens of New York that our soldiers are always remembered and respected. In the early 1900s, the tourists probably respected the amount of nationalism that was displayed to the public. Now in 2016, tourists probably see the monument as a landmark in the city. An interesting fact that I learned while examining the monument was; the monument itself contained a piece of metal that was from the original USS Maine that sank. I thought this was an interesting gesture that the creator of this monument did. I also personally believe that there is a deeper meaning for this gesture. I believe that, having the
