The 1960s were the golden years for American auto manufacturers such as Chevy, Ford and Chrysler. With cheap gas prices at 30 cents and the roads open, americans had the need for speed. The americans need for speed was met by such cars as the Mustang , the camaro, and the super charged Road Runner. The 1960's automobiles belonged to a distinct decade of automobile history with the muscle and pony cars.
The mustang was first introduced in April of 1964. The Mustang was one of the first cars to be labeled as a muscle car.Contrary to popular belief the mustang was not named after the horse, and it was named after the P-51 Mustang fighter plane. The car was built in 1968 and was called the plymouth roadrunner. Under their Plymouth label, Chrysler released the Road Runner. They had to pay Warner Brothers $50,000 to use the name “Road Runner.” The name was based on the popular Road Runner cartoon. Just like its cartoon counterpart, the Plymouth Road Runner was one fast car.

Mustang had a sleek design that everybody liked. It was two doors, big tire, and stripes running down the hood. As stated by the book muscle cars, “the main selling point what was under the hood it was the magnificent styling that caught America’s attention and made mustang one of the most successful first year cars ever with more than 100,000 sold.” When released it only cost 2300 dollars.

The For Mustang Shelby G.T. 350 came out in 1965-1966 and was often referred to as the "Cobra." The first G.T. 350 was not built for comfort or the common driver.
