Hillary Sessi is a school counselor at Detroit Cristo high school, while her title is a counselor, the best way to describe her job is saying she is the school therapist. Before she started working there, that was the title of her job, but there was a lot of stigma seeing the school therapist. Thus, they changed her name to school counselor. She is a counselor to all 320 students, there are no specific requirements to see her, students can come on their own if teachers refer them to her. She is currently have a caseload of about 100 students that she meets with on a weekly or biweekly basis, and all other students can still request to see her. She assist students with academic, social, emotional, behavior and family issues.
On April 17th, I attended an Honors College thesis presentation by Barbara Armeta, an American Studies major here at UMass Lowell. Throughout her presentation, she explains the research she did on a ranch owned by her family and the history of the land. Armeta started her presentation by going all the way back through her family line to the end of the Spanish - American war. She introduced Electa Ousley, who was one of the first women in Gilroy, CA to be granted the right to claim her own land. Ousley and her husband were one of the early pioneers in Santa Clara County who made the wagon train journey during the Gold Rush.
Ms.Dasilva is a school counselor. In school we all might wonder how Her personal life is outside of the school. Well….. Now we are going to know. Ms Dasilva Is a wonderful and kind person. I interviewed her in school in her office. I interviewed her in her office because I thought that was the best place to do it since it is like her second home and also because it’s a calm place. When I interviewed her she seemed to be comfortable, I was too.

Two months before the beginning of the 21st century, Melanie Pillaca-Gutierrez was born in South Florida. She grew up in a sunny suburban community and attended Park Trails Elementary as the only latina in her kindergarten class. At five years old, she was oblivious to the stares she received for the color of her skin or the language she spoke with her parents. Michelle Ederer is a licensed master's social worker (LMSW) in a school called Children's Zone Promise Academy II Upper Elementary. She was born in Thornwood, NY on February 19, 1992. In 2014, she graduated from Marist College with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in social work. She then, went on to pursue her masters in New York University and graduated in 2015. Upon graduating, she was able to get a New York State Provisional School Social Work Certificate, which allowed her to work in public school settings. In the past, she worked as a Youth Outreach Prevention Intern at Grace Smith House. S is a 59 year old African-American female born and raised in Anson County who has attended several institutes of higher learning. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Secretarial Administration from Barber-Scotia College, she later received special education teaching licensure from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Because of her love for learning, S has also taken online classes through the University of Phoenix. She has been a secondary special education teacher for three years and currently works with 8th graders at Anson Middle School.
I could confidently say meeting with her confirms the many reasons I’ve considered a career as a school counselor and plan to apply to school counseling graduate school programs. Her job clearly has its demanding moments however I sensed that overall her satisfaction with her job was very high. She plays an important role to enriching the lives of many students and through that she finds much purpose in her job
School counselors collaborate with other school personnel such as teachers who will help implement guidance lessons in the classroom. As a school counselor it is important to keep the teachers motivated to help implement these programs. Resource teachers typically work the special education students, collaborating with resource teachers ensures that all students are included in the comprehensive program. The resource teacher can help provide alternative to working with students in an inclusive manner. The principles and assistance principles of the school typically serve on the advisory committee, they provide resources to the program, and help communicate the important of the counseling program. School psychologist are there to assist with mental health services, doing assessments, and working with the school counselor during crisis situations. School nurses provide health services to the students. They monitor student medications and note changes in students behavior or effectiveness of the medication. Secretaries are equally important in the collaborative model. Secretaries are typically the first person a parent will come in contact with when entering the school. They are the ones that create that first impression (Erford, 2015). Community agencies can provide additional support to students outside of
When asked about how this impacts her instruction and instructional time, she said greatly. She alters most everything for each student and group that they are working and developing at his or her level and pace. She mentions that it can be difficult to meet all of the student’s needs with just her in the classroom and only 15 minutes a day with the support staff for their grade. However, she has seen great improvement with students as the year went on.
School counselors help students in setting up their career path to college, ensuring that student achieves academic success and maintain a positive personal/social behavior during their educational years. As stated in The role of the professional school counselor, (ASCA, 2009b), through leadership, advocacy and collaboration, school counselors promote equity and access to rigorous educational experiences for all students. For this reason, counselors help students become proactive and judicious grown-ups for their future. “The ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs....unites counselors with one vision and one voice, which creates unity and focus toward improving student achievement” (ASCA National Model: A framework for school counseling programs, para. 1). This program was designed for school counselors to promote student success in their academics, emotional and social life.
