On April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas, a little girl named Selena Quintanilla – Perez was born. She was born to Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Marcella Quintanilla. Selena Quintanilla- Perez has 2 siblings named Abraham Quintanilla 3rd and Suzette Quintanilla. Mrs. Quintanilla- Perez was an American singer, songwriter, spokesperson, actress, and a fashion designer. She was also known as the Queen of Tejano music and to the media outlets they called her “Tejano Madonna” for her clothing choices. Selena Quintanilla- Perez was raised as a Jehovah’s witness. When Selena was in the 8th grade and father took her out of school. At the age of 17 she earned a high school diploma from the American School of Correspondence in Chicago. She got accepted to Louisiana State University.
Selena recorded her first LB record in 1984 with Los Dinos for Freddie Records. The name Tejano Madonna was because she started to sing English- language songs and she recorded Tejano music compositions. The first years of touring her family sang for food and had barley no money for gas. In 1992 she took a break from everything to marry her husband Chris Perez. Chris was part of their Band “Selena y Los Dinos”. Her father didn’t want her to get married to Chris. But Selena was so in love with Chris that they ran away and got married. When they were driving back home from getting married they heard the music channel said congrats to Selena Quintanilla and Chris Perez for getting married. Selena told Chris that they had to give it time and the next day they went and told her father and he welcomed his new son –in- law to the family. Some people traveled thousands of miles to visit her house. Boutiques and the crime scene, while churches with large congregations of Latinos held prayers in her name. All major television networks in the United States interrupted their regular programming to break the news about the death of Selena. The public’s reaction to Selena’s death was compared to those that followed the deaths of John Lennon, Elvis Presley and John F. Kennedy. Radio personality Howard Stern mocked Selena’s murder, burial by playing her music with gun shots in the back ground. Some white Americans were unaware of the singer and her popularity criticized the attention she and her murder received from both the media and the Latino community. On April 12, 1995, two weeks after her death the Texas governor George W. Bush declared her birthday Selena day in Texas. Some Americans were offended because Selena Day that year coincided with Easter.
On the day Selena was killed, vigils and memorials were held throughout Texas and California. About 30,000 to 40,000 fans passed by Selena’s casket. More than 78,00 signed a book of condolence. Selena’s family and former band Los Dinos held a tribute concert a week after the 10th anniversary of her murder on April 7, 2005. In January 2015, it was announced that two-day annual event called Fiesta de la Flor would be held in Corpus Christi by the Corpus Christi Visitor Bureau as a tribute to
