What is a hero? Is a hero a powerful being capable of doing amazing things? Or, is a hero just someone to look up to? If anyone can be a hero, then would they even want to be one in the first place? Being in the spotlight is hard as any mistake you make will ruin or hurt your “hero” status. If the hero has always been powerful and well known, like Odysseus, they would already know how to act like a hero. They would know not to make any mistakes. Odysseus is a hero and has been considered one for thousands of years, but does he really deserve that title? In many ways, he is flawed. Odysseus, just like all of us, he is not the perfect hero or person at all due to his untrustworthiness, his ego, and his human nature.
First, Odysseus was an extremely irresponsible and untrustworthy person. Odysseus, many times during the book, was shown to make terrible decisions. For example, he stepped out on his own marriage twice with two different women. He may, arguably, had had no choice in the matter because after all, they were both powerful goddesses. However, stepping out on your marriage and not ever questioning yourself, even after 7 years with one woman, is a terrible, untrustworthy thing to do to your wife of more than a decade.

In society today, the man who saved the cat from the tree is praised as a hero. News stories are published about him and he becomes a well known person in society, for a few days at least. This may be similar to what Odysseus had gone through. All of the attention would likely go to someone’s head and Odysseus, being under much stress, would likely have the same problems. Just like everyone else, Odysseus is not a god, only a very strong and powerful man. Humans are flawed and make mistakes. Him being human means that mistakes will be made. Odysseus is a person, and he is not
