A hero is someone who helps people in need, even if it means putting themselves in harm’s way. They are brave, selfless, kind, and loyal people who come from all different backgrounds. We can see people who embody this definition of heroism in many different places. Heroes can be seen in TV shows, movies, books, and even in our everyday lives. Being a hero does not have to involve grand gestures, it can be as simple as giving someone a compliment. In The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, there are many different characters who embody these heroic qualities. Despite their backgrounds, ages, and social inequality, they still choose to be heroes every day. This shows that Johnny is a hero because he was brave enough to stand up against the socs, and sacrifice his future to save Pony. Additionally, Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally arrive back at the church in Windrixville to find it in flames. When they realized that there were children trapped in the church, Pony and Johnny ran in without hesitation. Johnny and Pony successfully got the children to safety. The author states “I caught one quick look at his face; it was red-marked from falling embers and sweat-streaked, but he grinned at me, he wasn’t scared either. That was the only time I could think of when I saw him without that defeated, suspicious look in his eyes. He looked like he was having the time of his life.” (Hinton, 92). This shows Johnny’s heroism because he risked, and eventually lost, his own life to save the lives of the children.
