Introduction
In Australia health promotion is important as it becomes a pathway to better well-being. Health promotion is mainly reinforced by the World Health Organisation (WHO) who is a leading supporter of not only health promotion but also medical aid and care for all people around the world. The World Health Organisation is funded and backed by the United Nations, a society of countries banded together to make this world a better place for disadvantaged and regular people. Another party in which the World Health Organisation is governed by is the World Health Assembly. Health can be promoted through campaigns, for example the ‘Parents, Young People and Alcohol’ campaign focuses on the rising issue of alcohol consumption in the younger generation.

Health promotion is needed to raise awareness about health so that people can have control of their body and mind. The World Health Organisation’s definition of health promotion is, ‘The process of enabling people to increase their control over the dimensions of heath. This therefore leads to health improvement’. The definition means that health promotion is necessary so the person can be aware of their body, thus having an incentive to become healthier.

For many years, health promotions and prevention has been the focus for healthcare providers, especially nurses. Health promotion seeks to improve a person or population’s health by teaching about and helps people become more aware of risky behaviors associated with different diseases. It encourages individuals to take preventative measures to prevent onset or worsening of a disease or illness. It encourages a healthier lifestyle (Edelman & Mandle, 2010). The strategy is to help people make health improvements or prevention before illness occurs.
