Health Care Personal Statement

Through the many trips that my family has taken to the hospital due to various reasons, I have become fond of the hospital and its many wonders. After all the things that the medical field has done for me and my family, I decided to contribute to my local hospital to volunteer and help out those who pay visits to the hospital. Through my exposure to various clinical populations, I want to improve my ability to serve others in this capacity that can guide me towards the medical profession in the future.

They diligently studied and worked their way through college, medical school, residency, and fellowship programs. Frequently, I enjoyed their anecdotes about their experiences at the hospital, ranging from their interactions with patients to their diagnoses of rare pathologies. More recently, I had the privilege of shadowing them at the Cultural Cup Clinic, a free clinic for the underserved. There, I witnessed some remarkable interactions between patients and physicians. What most captured my attention was the altruism of the physicians, who would go to extraordinary lengths to provide the best possible care for their patients.

I have always had a high admiration for the impact that physicians have on families. At an early age, my younger sister had major heart surgery. Being four, I was too young to fully grasp what this meant for my family, but I quickly learned the grief my parents endured thinking their only daughter would not live past two. The process to become a doctor is one of the longest professional journeys. However, my experience at M. D. Anderson showed me how important and rewarding it will be in the end. After I was born, I was immediately transferred to neonatal intensive care unit where I received continuous fluids to clean my lungs. Additionally, seven months after finally getting to go home, I returned to receive one of two nasolacrimal duct surgeries. I am now thankfully a healthy 19- year-old. I consistently remind myself that if it were not for that amazing team of doctors and nurses that believed that I could be born, I would not be here today.

In addition to scholastic achievement, well rounded physicians have plenty of life experiences. They have fought through tragedies, yet find reasons to smile. They demonstrate success and leadership in spite of past failures. Their story may not be glamorous, but they consistently overcome obstacles that would stifle others. Their drive and determination defines who they are. The physician that emphasizes the well being of others over personal gain, that is the physician I plan to be. My path towards becoming a physician has been difficult in order to shape me into a more complete person. Before I can go on to celebrate my mother and what she stood for, I must share with you the reality of what life was like for her and our family. Of course no one suffered more than my mother, and we all shared her pain. There were many times as a family that we would be in denial of her illness. We would disagree with the doctor’s findings. And sometimes we didn’t agree with the course of action the doctor’s would take. But my mom would always assure us that they were doing all that they could do for her, given her complicated case. She always tried to keep a positive attitude.

Personal Statement I was drawn to the medical field due to my exposure to health implications faced by mother and myself. During my senior year at Montgomery College I diagnosed with thyroid disorder which led to hyperthyroidism. As a care giver for my mother who suffered from dementia my feeling was to build and maintain outstanding health care services which began to form. The affordability and quality of health care that my mother and I have received is something that I have always taken for granted as every citizen should have right to access to the highest standard of physical and mental health. My goal is to create an important contribution to the health of people in my community through efficient management and delivery of health care services.

Healthcare is one of the largest growing fields with increasing demands every day. In the past, healthcare was thought to be a work force of doctors, nurses and other medical staff but it has evolved into a large industry with a need for managers and administration. This management and administration has brought a new skillset to the field that strongly interests me. I spent the first two years of my undergraduate education in pharmacy school but through my many job shadows I fell in love with the business side of the health industry. I became fascinated by healthcare administration because of the potential opportunities such as: the ability to combine my talents of leadership and organization with my passion of health; the capacity to analyze and predict future trends to help my organization stay ahead therefore becoming a leader in industry; and the capability to understand medical professionals and their skills to lead and direct them in ways that will create a super-team.

The medical field is a career path that brings about many options and opportunities of great value. The noble idea of being a doctor tends to cloud the diligent studying and precise training that is actually required for this career. I have wanted to become a doctor since a very young age, and now that the opportunity is here for the taking, I have fully researched what it takes to succeed in this profession and various specialties of the practice. The road to a medical degree is one filled with thousands of notes, years of schooling, and many stressful nights, but the reward is one incomparable to any other. I've always knew that I wanted to work in the healthcare field, since almost everyone in my family had a role in the healthcare field. My mother, aunts and cousins are mostly registered nurses, my father works as a recreational aide in a nursing home. My whole life has been around the healthcare field such as volunteering in different hospitals, nursing homes and seeing the roles they play in the health field. I am currently attending Saint Francis College to earn a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Healthcare Management. I enjoy seeing how everything comes together in a hospital that most people don't see such as rules, regulation and policies.

Each of these individuals took time out of their schedules and consoled with my family. They had explained the treatment plan in detail, precautions, risks, and had answered all of our questions. At the age of thirteen I didn’t understand much of the details the doctors had explained. Although, I knew my father had cancer and he needed to be treated.  I saw my father undergo a thirteen-hour surgery, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, chemotherapy and radiation, and rehab. My father was strong enough and defeated cancer. This life experience has influenced me to become a physical therapist because I saw my father undergo physical therapy. By undergoing therapy sessions, he was able to walk on his own without a walker and speak more fluently.  Seeing my dad defeat cancer for the second time, motivates me to work harder and help others going through such situations. I am passionate about what it means to enjoy holistic health and wellness on both a personal and global scale. This focus seeks to find similarities that unify all people, and a liberal education has given me the skills to further seek this unification. I engage in the diversity that surrounds me on campus and remain conscious of the injustices in our society that have withstood generations and culture shifts. By understanding health and wellness across the world, I also recognize that all humans are connected by the same foundational problems and that there is value in understanding holistic health through the viewpoint of other cultures. I aspire to delve deeper into how culture impacts the health of a group of people, including their socio-economic standing, available food sources in a demographic area, as well as the safety of the food being provided.

The year was 2012: The Affordable Care Act was still in its infancy and I had just moved to Germany, where I would spend two years as a full-time volunteer. Amongst many other responsibilities, I often found myself in hospitals – gaining my first exposure to socialized medicine. It was during this time my fascination with healthcare management and the contrasting methods of delivery was realized. My time spent working with Franklin County Medical Center has given me a deep appreciation for rural, critical access hospitals and the vital role they play in the overall health of a community.

At the young age of sixteen, I had my first introduction to the field of health care. At that time, I took a summer job working as a nursing assistant at a local nursing home. The first day that I stepped onto the floor of the nursing home, the smells, and sights of deterioration over-whelmed me. I questioned whether I should consider this line of work. My perspective changed as I interacted with the patients and their families.
