Personal Statement
I was drawn to the medical field due to my exposure to health implications faced by mother and myself. During my senior year at Montgomery College I diagnosed with thyroid disorder which led to hyperthyroidism. As a care giver for my mother who suffered from dementia my feeling was to build and maintain outstanding health care services which began to form. The affordability and quality of health care that my mother and I have received is something that I have always taken for granted as every citizen should have right to access to the highest standard of physical and mental health. My goal is to create an important contribution to the health of people in my community through efficient management and delivery of health care services. My ambitions of entering the medical field was unfruitful when I realized that biology was not something that I enjoyed. I decided to focus on health care which is facing public policy issues that need to resolve in order to deliver better health care systems.

Adversity has only improved my tenacity, focus, endurance, and problem solving abilities. My drive to improve the lives of others will help propel me through the difficulties of medical school and beyond. The invaluable skills that I have gained and learned through my after school clubs, Future Business Leaders of America, (FBLA) and National Honor Society( NHS), has stirred up a desire in me to help my community and to make a difference in the lives of people, by majoring in the Public Health field. Through Public Health, I will help those in my community at large to live healthy lives; mentally, socially, physically and culturally. Healthcare is an essential need in life and is a great field that would allow me to make a difference.
For as long as I can remember, I have always been interested in pursuing a career in the medical field. These interests were most likely brought to life from my desire to want to help people and learn more about the human body. The experiences I’ve had throughout my life have brought me closer to the belief that I can one day make a difference in the world through medicine. All though I am not completely decided on what I would like my future career to be, I have been able to narrow my options down to a few of the many choices available.
The medical field has a wide range of opportunities that many plan to seek. Some, and hopefully a majority, pursue this career in order to better society one healthy solution at a time; however others simply pursue it to exceed parental expectations or to sit in a higher tax bracket. Personally, my reason for pursuing this career, through St Mary’s outstanding program, is altogether unique and abnormal to say the least. Normality never made an impact on the world. I, instead, stray far from the beaten path.
My ambition in seeking acceptance to your program is to do my part to improve the quality of the health care system through increasing my own abilities in health care management. While there are many medically qualified individuals working in medical management, there is unfortunately often a serious deficit in quality management experience. In order to achieve my ambition, I plan to utilize my strong medical qualifications and improve upon my strong management experience.
During my undergraduate career, I discovered further inspiration to pursue medicine while founding Texas Healthy Habits, a student organization. As an officer, I created engaging lesson plans and traveled to local elementary schools to teach children the importance of public health. When I revisited the schools, I was delighted to see that my lessons stuck with the children and they were already applying them to their daily lives. It became apparent that my lessons were helping kids make decisions that had a positive impact on their health. This opportunity revealed to me that I am drawn to a career in medicine because one of my long-term career goals is to be in a position that allows me to

Imagine seeing the beautiful smile of a stranger who has been unable to genuinely smile for months. Introduction As a child, I dreamed of becoming a video game tester, but as I grew up, I realized it may not be a likely career path. I have discovered a new career path that aligns with my interests and goals. The medical field is a great choice for me, as it allows me to connect with people and positively impact their lives. My desire to help others makes me an asset to the field, and my ability to communicate effectively will help me interact with patients. About Me Throughout my life, various factors have influenced and impacted my journey differently.
I became captivated by the opportunity to apply my knowledge of the biological and chemical sciences in a way that one day may save a life. Though my interest stems from my experiences, my passion to pursue this field lies elsewhere. Growing up in a family of low socioeconomic status in an area with few sources of acceptable health care, I saw my parents struggle as they aged to provide my siblings and I with a proper education. There were times they would ignore their own illness in order to save funds for an emergency for us. Observing this, I knew that no matter how difficult of a path I picked, regardless if it was pharmaceutical sciences or the medical field, my parents had concurred greater difficulties. Growing under such conditions, I began to realize the disparities in quality of treatments my parents received compared to those who of a higher socioeconomic status. This motivated me to pursue a career where I would be given the chance to offer care to individuals through unbiased views. Of course, there are a plethora of careers that can fulfill this but medicine has presented itself as very unique to me. It promises a lifestyle devoted to empathetic patient care, direct patient interaction, and a boundless opportunity to learn and experience something new. As the end of my undergraduate experience is forthcoming, I look forward to taking on the next phase of my life, endeavoring to join the ranks of tomorrow’s
After my observations, I have learned a lot about how the the medical aspect of the health care system worked. I always had the mindset that the doctors were the ones who ran everything in a hospital or a clinic. Upon observing, I realized that this was false and that it took teamwork, cooperation, and communication to help create an environment to best serve its patients. When I came into the University of Michigan as well as the Health Sciences Scholar Program, I had set my target to go into family medicine in order to pursue a career as a family physician. I also saw that there were many health disparities and inequities among patients in hospitals as well. I thought maybe I could help fix this if I became a physician. After my observations, I had an ambivalent feeling if I should still continue with what my heart was set on. I never really thought about exploring the vast array of other health-related professions. There were many fields of health professions I had really never thought about and this class as well as my observations had really helped open my eyes to the complexity of the health system to make it work.
The healthcare sector offers a variety of professional opportunities that include pediatric, geriatrics, public policy and many other areas in which I hope to make a impact towards. I have always been intrigued by medicine and continue to gain more interest in public health. In the future, I desire to combine both medicine and public health by participating in an MD and MPH program. My experiences and education provide me with constant motivation in achieving my goals.
Currently, as a Healthcare Specialist (68W), I am honored to help improve the lives of U.S. Service Members, veterans, and their family members. However, my true aspiration is to make an impact on the underserved communities in the United States and globally. Therefore, to accomplish my goals, I aspire to obtain my Master's Degrees in Physician Assistant Studies. I desire this degree because I understand how much of a need for a transformation in medicine, especially in underserved areas. I am aware of this need because I grew up in an underserved community.
My interest for public health stems from the need to aid numerous people in disease and injury prevention, health protection, and strategies for health promotion. I hope to earn a Master of Public Health with a focus in the area of health care management as well as hospital administration in relation to public health policy development and education.
