For many years I struggled with one thought in my mind. Since I left school many years ago, I have been completely focused on work. I never again thought I could one day become a student once more again. I have worked in many different places as well as many companies [and] did different things. My goal was to make money fast and probably own my own business. My conviction was that I was well equipped for life, and based on my level of education I could easily change things the way I wanted. First, my academic excellent and achievements were what I counted on, and my ability to do work was paying. My family praised me as I was able to give back on many occasions. A few years ago I began to associate myself with good people. I got membership into different social and economic groups with the aim of wilding my thoughts. It did work pretty well as I was able to …show more content…
So I thought it is wise to combine technology with administrative experience since I studied administration at the Bachelor’s level. At work I have seen that most of the weaknesses in the health care system are to be better at management and the delivery of health information. This is reason for including Informatics in my program. Health Care Informatics Administration is a double major and I hope to benefit a lot in both fields. Also I believe that as a Health administrator an understanding of information technology is an excellent plus. This is because the cost of IT is almost always grossly exaggerated when it comes to evaluating the cost. So with such combined majors, it is an advantage for me to be easily find a job Maybe my dream of owning my own business can one day become true in healthcare or other related fields. Studying health care informatics and administration is an excellent choice and I strongly believe it can be done again with hard
The competencies of informatics fit well under this umbrella of nursing as it assists in better patient care. Nursing informatics “is the synthesis of nursing science, information science, computer science, and cognitive science for the purpose of managing and enhancing health care data, information, knowledge, and wisdom to improve patient care and the nursing profession” (McGonigle, 2014). For an example, in my clinical practice, technology informatics can be utilized to measure my patient outcomes, easily access electronical medical records, and easily assess workloads and interventions. It can be seen how Informatics can enhance my abilities to improve patient care and therefore aligns with my philosophy of providing high grade
I first heard about the Clinical Health Informatics program at Georgia State University through my academic advisor. When I first enrolled in to the University, my hopes were set on the Respiratory Therapist Program because I thought it would be an interesting field to start my career in. During my advisement I began to weigh out all my options and I realized that being a respiratory therapist was not the degree plan for me. As my advisor went over other degrees that he thought I would be interested in, he came across the idea of pursing a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies in Health Informatics degree.
In this discussion board post, I will compare and contrast informatics and clinical informatics. Then I will give two examples of clinical informatics found in my organization that has been found to improve patient care. I will also give two examples of how my nurse manager can utilize data management in order to improve patient care. Lastly, I will discuss why President Bush mandated that all health records be in electronic form by the year 2014.
I found the program to be well rounded in the health care field and I am happy that I chose to continue with this program as an entry into the health administration field. This program has given me more opportunity to prepare an entrance into a professional environment of being of service in various health facilities and agencies, clinics and hospitals. The responsibility of the health administrator will encompass a wide variety of duties including but not limited to administrative, medical, legal and ethical requirements and brilliantly combines the overall knowledge of the business administration and the health care system.
I have decided to pursue a career in health information technology. My eventual goal is to get a job in a medical billing and coding setting. I am lucky enough to have a couple of family members that currently work in this field, so I am ahead of the curve in knowing what to expect and where are good places to apply.
When I first enrolled in BMI 5300: Introduction to Biomedical Informatics class, I was very eager and excited to learn the role of biomedical informatics in healthcare organizations and the importance of data capture and analysis in improving public health. One of the major misconceptions I had was that this course would not cover wide range of factors influencing the biomedical informatics field. Much to my surprise, the course provided a comprehensive analysis of factors related to biomedical informatics, including but not limited to EHR systems, interfaces, Health Information Exchanges, Meaningful Use (MU) requirements, and controlled medical vocabularies such as Logical Observation Identifiers Names and
Health informatics is the bridging of computer science, information and the health care field. This interdisciplinary field can be applied to a range of medical fields such as nursing, biomedicine, medicine and subspecialties such as immunology (immunoinformatics). Informatics not only has roles to play in day-to-day areas of immunology such as data storage/retrieval, decision support, standards and electronic health care records but also in research and education such as data mining and simulation systems (Coiera, 2002). Informatics and more specifically, health informatics first started being used in in the late 1950s with the rise of computers (Ho, 2010). Technologies such as computers allowed practitioners and researches
7. Describe the main points of the Pod/Vodcast. Healthcare Informatics is defined by the U.S National Library of Medicine as the Interdisciplinary study of the design, development, adoption, and application of IT- based innovations in healthcare services delivery, management, and planning (Ong, 2014). Health informatics is being utilized to enhance process efficiency. The wave of health informatics began in the 1990’s. It has changed the way we do things from shopping to work to the way we live our daily lives (Kudyba, 2010). Health Informatics has doubled productivity (Kudyba, 2010). Healthcare is slowly emerging into the world of informatics. Many healthcare facilities are now utilizing electronic medical records. Healthcare Informatics will help reduce cost. Utilizing technology increases the speed of routing
In my career choice I would choose Healthcare Informatics Specialist. In health informatics I would like to implement health systems in the hospital. This position is interesting to me because I currently work in the health field, and there are numerous changes in the system that happens at least every two or three years. There are always upgrades that the system would need to function for the employees to do their work. It is important for hospitals to have the correct system with everything going electronic. I would enjoy this job because there is always new programs to learn and upgrades to improve the system to be more successful. I would go onsite to facilities, and train workers on the use of the new systems, and get feedback on any issues
As I am about to complete the health care administration within few months and double major with the business management. My extra ordinary skills and expertise which I have gained through health care administration qualification will enable me to perform my duties and responsibilities more effectively and efficiently. I can apply my knowledge and information gained from the study in the practical filed and it will assist me to grow and perform my duties easily.
Many people are not aware of what professionals are responsible for in the fields of Management Information Systems and Health Care Information Systems or what well-paying jobs are available in those fields. Some people know a small of information about them but do nor do they understand why someone would want to major in these fields. This information obtained research of these fields will help the reader become more familiar help you become more familiar with what they are, what they do, the career choices they can provide, and how these fields is very dominate in today’s job market.
While being a Health Informatics and Information technology student at Community College of Baltimore County, not only I was able to start my career as a billing coordinator at Johns Hopkins University’s Pathology Department but also continued to fulfil my dream of completing my education. I have a very strong understanding of computer system while expressed keen interest in learning about various diseases and diagnosis. With immense gratitude, I give credit of my success to this wonderful program offered at CCBC campus that allowed me to expand my horizons by learning in depth about healthcare and healthcare delivery system. Starting a career in such big organization, without any prior experience within healthcare industry makes me feel
Demographic shifts in the global population, greater levels of technological disruption due to the Internet, social media and the en masse adoption of smartphones and tablet PCs are together re-defining the healthcare informatics market. System and informatics theories have emerged as the foundational elements of healthcare informatics supported by the Data, Information. Knowledge (DIK) Model which acts as a taxonomy for these developments (Haugh, 2005). Systems and informatics theories along with the DIK Model form the ontological foundations of healthcare informatics field of research occurring today and will continue to provide a basis for further research (Braganza, 2004). The intent of this analysis is to evaluate the contributions of systems and informatics, the role of the DIK Model, expert systems in nurse care and medicine, and the use of decision aids and decision support systems. All of these elements are critically important to strategic information systems plans healthcare providers put into place to serve patients while giving healthcare professionals the applications, systems and software they need to excel in their roles (Djellal, Gallouj, 2007).
But to my disbelief during my public health research projects the results were contradictory. Most of the patients we surveyed were not satisfied with the medical/dental services and the reason for that dissatisfaction was not quality of clinical services it was administrative work and the increased cost of the medical/dental services. It became a dinner topic for my brother and me who being a doctor shared the same concerns. We attended conferences, seminars holistically researched on the topic of improving quality of healthcare and every time the answer came out to be effective administration skills, effective use of information technology. This answer laid the seeds of healthcare administration as a career for me. I joined a premier healthcare institution as an administration intern and with my hard work secured a position as business analyst with them.
The Intro to Health Informatics course has provided a broad range of health information that introduces the core concepts in the biomedical community. Throughout this course, my learning experience in health informatics has advance, for I was able to learn a list of materials including: the relationship of biomedical informatics and its related field; the roles of informatics in decision support systems and related health IT applications; and the importance of biomedicine and the use of biomedical information. In the Biomedical Informatics (4th edition) text book, it reflects the outstanding changes in both computing and health care that continues to occur. These changes have set a high rate of interest in the roles that health IT must play in the health care.
