Harry Potter Book Banned

Growing up in the United States, people are taught to voice their opinions and to stand for their beliefs. The right to voice one’s opinion, no matter how disagreeable, is supposedly one of the reasons Americans can be seen as free and uncensored compared to other nations. In schools, there are many books that are banned due to the content and the author’s intended message. Banned books do not mean the books are filled with vulgar words and messages, at least for the recent list of books banned. Surprisingly, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling is the number one banned book around the world (ALA.org). Many children grew up reading about the creative world of magic and the characters’ journey of finding themselves in a world far different from their own. This book explores what it is like living in the South during the Great Depression. It shows how common the discrimination of people based on their race was and how people would take the law into their own hands when persecuting a person of color. This book has been challenged multiple times due to the racial slurs and the horrific actions of the characters in the book. Specifically in Seminole County, Florida, one mother challenged the book because she did not want her child to be exposed to the content of the book. What is important to note about the author’s intent of writing this book, was to show what people went through during those times when people of color were seen as inferior to their Caucasian counterparts. This book is a history lesson so people do not let history repeat itself. It is important to be aware of what has happened in history and to be socially aware of how this nation has come together. Yes, this book does contain racial slurs, but knowing that this word can offend and belittle someone is important for the future
