Should books be banned? Books are a gateway to a world of imagination, but some schools are trying to shut those gates off by banning them. Books are some of the best teachers left, it's not up to a school to decide what a child should or should not read. Banning books can deprive a child of the opportunity to think. Books should not be banned because of the lessons they can teach, the fact that a school should not even be able to ban them, and it can deprive a child of the opportunity to think. Books are some of the best teachers we have “they teach us vocabulary social skills and new ways of thinking”(leigh). It’s also true that textbooks could teach a child this, but not in the way they would learn from a story. When a child is really engaged in a story they will learn a lot more than they think. “Books teach us history ”(leigh). and many books are based on certain time periods or cover certain events. When a child reads these stories, they will retain the …show more content…
It is reasonable for a book to be banned if it is just not suitable for children as in its mature content. But if a book is being banned because of a parent who does not like the book or thinks it is a touchy subject, then it is just not reasonable and there should not even be a discussion about banning it. “Parents who don't like specific books can have their kids "opt out" of an assignment without infringing on the rights of others.” (www.procon.org/headline.php?headlineID=005365). There is no reason for a parent to try to have a book banned because they do not like the content in the book.’’ Also, the parent can choose to have their child not read the book without having it banned from the whole school. Parents should censor their own child and not the entire
Judy Blume brought up a very interesting matter that made a good impression on me. Books are meant to inspire and spark interest in new topics for people. We should not ban books because there are controversial or impropriate but come to a conclusion on how we should make it be suitable for the ones who want to read it. Yes, school district and public libraries will always have a reason for why we should ban certain books, but not every book is that unsuitable no matter how many impropriate issues are in there.
The practice of the censorship of books in schools has been prevalent due to the explicit content of them. Parents have been complaining to schools about books that count as required reading because they disapprove with the points made in the book. If a book consists of offensive or sexually explicit material, then parents would challenge the schools about them in order to prevent their children from reading them. Censorship in general has been an intensely debated issue because it is considered an infringement to the First Amendment of the United States Constitution while others argue it is used to conceal inappropriate things (Aliprandini and Sprague). The banning of books in school curriculum has also been debated since parents see
According to the American Library Association, the most common group of people, challenging a book being read in schools, was the parents of the students. Parents have a right to be in charge of what is put into the minds of their students, however just because one parent objects does not mean that the whole school should ban the book from the list. A solution for this book would be to enforce parental consent for books to be read in the classroom. If a parent does not want a book to be read in the classroom, then there should be other options for the student to read. The school and teacher should not trespass on a parent’s rights of raising their child. I believe that if a parent has a concern, they should go and discuss the problem with the teacher so that the teacher will be able to defend their reasoning for choosing the book to be read in the classroom.
Book bannings is censorship. It prevents the spread of ideas among the student populace. And while one can understand keeping more mature books away from middle schoolers and younger, since they have years before they have to be an adult, there is no valid argument for banning books for high schoolers. They have between 0 and 4 years until they have to start being an adult, outside of school, and if we keep new and more mature ideas away from them, that keeps them from being the best adult they can be. New concepts in books may be scary, but we still can’t keep them from it, they have their right to read what they wish. Even if alternate solutions have to be used on certain students, humanity is not going to become savage, and immature from
For the reasons of violence, religious viewpoints, offensive language, and sexuality some of the world’s best written novels and short stories are being banned from schools everywhere. As I look at the world around me, I see the things that books, such as The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, and even The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, are banned for. I hear racial slurs, vulgar language, see violent video games, and even people being very sexual in public, and yet people are still banning books that are like the real world because they do not want the children of this nations to read about the things they see in their day-to-day lives. I find that preposterous. Oscar Wilde once said “The books that the world calls immoral are books
Book banning is something that should be done away with in schools. It hurts everyone, and the only time it is appropriate is if the book is deemed to be truly inappropriate for children by students, teachers, parents, and everyone else that deals with children for reasons related to obscenity and an imminent clear and present danger. In the outside world, public libraries and such cannot ban books. First amendment affects book banning a great deal.
The School board is no longer certain fiction belongs the curriculum. They are concerned that it does not teach about real life. Fiction is imagination it’s not real. Fiction books can be a good thing and bad thing sometimes. I think they should banned fiction books because it does not teach us anything important we do not learn anything from fiction books.
First of all, books are one of our best teachers because you can learn so much from different writers with their experience and how it can relate to yours. For example, books can teach you than regular teachers. Books can teach you more to life than teachers. Books can teach us the value of life and how to respect it. Books can teach us how to understand others. their past experiences. How they lived in their books. Another example is that books teaches how to use our vocabulary. Books can teach us many more than we have already known by regular teachers. It makes us think. Makes us visualize what you read. Finally, I believe that books should not be banned because we can learn life lessons from books than we can from teachers. For instance, books can change the way we feel after life. They can teach us compassion. Books talks about others actual lives that can affect us
The number of banned books for the past few years has gradually increase. Most of the books i found on the recent list shocked me but also made me feel greatful. I went to a Catholic school where teachers had the right to teach whatever they want. Scrolling down the list of banned books I realized that I've read majorty of those books for school. I personally think it is wrong to banned books because it's depriving students from learning. A lot of the books on the list had realistic problems which readers, students could learn from. It taught life lessons and gave many of the readers chance to see this from different perspecrtives. I think the reason why these books is banned is becasue there is people of higher power who wants to keep these
There is often one or more parents that complain about certain books being in a library because they don’t like the book. Many times a parent insists that an “offensive” book to be removed from a library. Parents are allowed to monitor their own children’s reading, nut they should not be able to make a decision for every other student prohibiting them
This is due to the fact that parents want to shield their children from sensitive content. Parents should not ban literature because they should not be in charge of student education. Parents tend to misinterpret book meanings which causes irrelevant book bans. Students should be able to read any book as long as it is appropriate to their grade level, they should not be shielded from realistic stories.
Books should not be banned from schools and libraries. By banning books, we are shielding children from the real world and eliminating critical life lessons that children should learn. We cannot raise children to believe that the world is always a kind safe place
The banning of books for “offensive language” is completely unnecessary and exaggerated. In recent events schools all over the country have banned certain books such as To kill a Mockingbird, for offensive language and other offensive content. A moratorium should not be placed on books for offensive language and content.
Around the globe many books are banned from schools and libraries because of their content, although many others disagree with the banning of books because it takes away our freedom of speech. Many books are banned and challenged because their content is considered inappropriate or offensive to others. But, others find that it goes against our first amendment rights when they take away what someone else has written. Butler University also shows other reasons for why books are often times banned. Also, many are outraged that books like To Kill a Mockingbird is on the banned books list because they are time-honored books. Many people believe books should be banned because their content is deemed inappropriate for younger audiences or because their content is on sensitive subjects. However, others believe it is our first amendment right to be able to read these books and that books contain important lessons in them.
Books have been banned all over the world because of the change in views many different people have about banning explicit content for teenagers. Prohibited books supposedly exist to keep children and teens from explicit information that they should not be exposed to at their age. Banning books from schools will merely only make the teenagers more intrigued in the topic than they were before. Teenagers will probably do it anyways and making sure that they do it safe is more important than trying to prevent them from something they will do anyways. Informing kids of the dangers will keep them safe and away from topics instead of more interested them.
