A novel can be interpreted in many ways depending on the reader. Many people have different perspectives and views on life. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood tells the story of Offred, a handmaid who lives in the Republic of Gilead. Offred’s world changes drastically because of the Christian theonomy that took over the United States government. These drastic events that Offred experiences can be seen differently in two different person’s perspectives. In the novel, the text can be read and interpreted differently by Christians and Atheists because Christians have a set belief system an Atheists, on the other hand, do not believe in any gods but in the scientific version of how the world was created. The main purpose of a Handmaids in the novel is to have a child with the Commander, which is known to them as the Ceremony. In Chapter 16, the Ceremony is first described to the readers. If a Christian in modern days were to read this passage they would be ashamed of the type of living morals they have. To Christians, this would be considered as adultery which is one of the worst sins for Christians. Adultery is much mentioned in the bible to …show more content…
They have very different beliefs then a Christian would have because Atheists beliefs are more science-based. For example, this part of the story wouldn't be as offensive to an Atheist because it is understanding that a Handmaid is forced to have a baby with the Commander although they have a wife. They would understand the Commander and their wives because many of the wives were fertile and couldn’t have babies. The ceremony can be seen in modern days as the similar action of having a surrogate. Many types of research show that religion plays an important role when making these types of decisions. In this case, Atheists wouldn’t have a hard time to decide whether or not they agree because they don’t have a belief system that challenges them to think
I have not seen a response to this problem so effectively stated, honest, and convincing. Nagel's arguments concerning the Theodicy Problem show that atheists think in a much more straightforward and practical fashion than do theists.
When it comes to religion a theist should be an individual who after being presented with all the facts for and against the existence of a God,subtracts these opposing groups of evidence and comes to the conclusion that their is a God. An atheist should be an individual whom after conducting the same process comes to the conclusion that their is not a
Gilead is a society not far from the present and it based around one central idea, control of reproduction by using women’s bodies as political instruments. Handmaids are women who the state took complete control of through their political subjugation. They are not allowed to vote, hold property, read or do anything that can make them independent from their husband and the state. These handmaids are reduced to their fertility and treated like nothing more than a set of ovaries and a womb. They lose their identity and become an object of the state. The narrator of The Handmaids Tale is a handmaid by the name of Offred. The novel takes place in first person point of view and this allows the readers to see how she is treated and all the events that take place for her. First person point of view allows the reader a closer view as to how a central theme develops by giving the reader a firsthand experience from the mind of the narrator.
In addition, there are two individuals who are atheists. Reading about religious beliefs can never provide the same amount of insight that a conversation can. Having such diversity among my peers, we are able to candidly discuss differences, ask questions about misconceptions that we may hold concerning each other’s traditions, and gain a better understanding of the beliefs of those around us. I find this dialogue to be extremely valuable as it has helped me to gain a better understanding of the religions that are existing in the world around us. Through having a better understanding of religions and their personal meanings, I am provided with a different lens through which to view world conflicts through, many of which are occurring in the name of differences in religious
Experts have debated over the purpose and validity behind atheism for centuries but common ground can show both sides that atheists and theists can live together in a harmonious
The Handmaid’s Tale is about Offered as she shares her thoughts and experiences in a journal-like form and provides some advice. Offred is a lower class female who has been taken from her husband and daughter at 5 years old to be a handmaid for the red commander at the red center. The point of this center is to reproduce with the Commander
Therefore, the only reason one has to behave ‘morally’ is because god, the bible or Jesus says you should. Moreover, the consequences of behaving in contradiction to Christian values or behaving ‘immorally’ involve punishment by god whether it be in this life or the after-life. This philosophy sheds some light on why atheism is feared, despised and misunderstood as well as why atheists are persecuted in America. If there is no god to answer to or no consequences for ‘bad behavior’, why then, would anyone behave in a good moral fashion? What is to prevent deviant behavior, if there is no god? These questions are the main basis for the Christian argument which maintains that atheists are untrustworthy, immoral or amoral, social deviants and therefore lesser human beings. Some have gone as far to say that atheists are unpatriotic, un-American and do not even have the right to be acknowledged as citizens of the United States.
In the novel The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, the dystopian society of Gileadean society is described. The role of women and the oppression of women by men cannot be missed while reading the novel. Due to the dropping fertility rates, fertile women are trained to be a Handmaid by the Aunts in the Red Center. The job of the Handmaid is to conceive a baby with the Commander, so the Commander and the Wife can nurture the child. Atwood uses the oppression of women in the Gileadean society to show her thoughts about the danger of historic events and the developments in society nowadays. The novel projects the struggle of Offred, who is a Handmaid herself, against the totalitarian restriction of her society and her desire for happiness and
The Handmaid’s Tale, written by Margaret Atwood, is a novel about a dystopian society. The novel tells about a new society called Gilead. Gilead was created in the United States by a revolution. This new society gradually took away the rights of women, until they were valued on their ovaries. Handmaids are women who have fully functional ovaries.

The Handmaid's Tale is a distopian novel of tightly wound truths and links to our society today. It is so tightly wound, like a thorn bush, that gaining any meaning from it at all proves to be a very arduous task indeed for those who are not predisposed to do so. Nevertheless, some meaning did present itself during the text, as follows.
By utilizing first person perspective readers are able to gain a complete understanding on the life of a handmaid while allowing readers to feel countless emotions like sympathy purely for the main protagonist Offred and her peers. In addition, the incorporation of flashbacks as well presenting the story in chronological order allows to create ambiguity, as it makes readers not completely conscious as to why particular characters are classified more than others. Also Atwood creates ambiguity in her novel by fast forwarding into the future and permitting reads to use their own inventiveness to construe the ending of Offred’s story. By making these two elements work together, Atwood efficiently communicates the theme of feminism being overruled in a patriarchal society by merely positioning readers into the mind of a handmaid and persistently utilizing flashbacks to allow readers to comprehend the life and freedom women had before a patriarchal society destroyed all women
Take for example the problem of evil. Evil does exist no matter yours believe system. The main thing is that the person who is believer one of the Abrahamic religions would probably tell you that this is plan of God and that God works in mysterious ways. In that case, no matter our actions, everything is already decided. Even if you go to hell or heaven is already decided long before you were born. Free Will becomes utopian dream of reality. This is another reason, why traditional view of God is with many errors. Atheistic explanation of evil has much more common sense than that one of the theistic person. Evil comes from man. This is truth, all evil and all good comes from man. Man, could do a great thing for his people, but wrong for another.
Surprisingly for such a religious boy, Pi admires atheists. To him, the important thing is to believe in something, and Pi can appreciate an atheist’s ability to believe in the absence of God with no concrete proof of that absence. Pi has nothing but disdain, however, for agnostics, who claim that it is impossible to know either way, and who therefore refrain from making a definitive statement on the question of God. Pi sees this as evidence of a shameful lack of imagination. To him, agnostics who cannot make a leap of faith in either direction are like listeners who cannot appreciate the non-literal truth a fictional story might provide.
