Maupassant wrote tales that were realistic and pessimistic and some had surprising endings. He was in the army and settled down in Paris. In Paris he began to start to develop his writing skills. His role model was a famous French author named Gustave Flaubert. Maupassant published his first short story in 1880 and it's called Ball of Fat. “The Necklace” is one of the most widely read story.

At a young age his parents divorced, he and his brother lived with his mom for most of his life. After he graduated college, he enlisted into the Franco- Prussian War. Although he served, and had other jobs afterwards he was not a very ambitious man.
