The Aftermath of Columbine High Shooting
A tragic event that occurred the year of 1999, the year I was born, was the Columbine High School Massacre. This event occurred in Denver, Colorado. On April 20, 1999, two boys by the names of Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, had hate for the school that they attended and the people who attended it. The shooters planned on bombing and shooting up the school, which they did. Klebold and Harris killed themselves after their shooting rampage, which left a total of 15 dead and 23 wounded (Larkin). The reason why I chose this topic was to talk about the effect of Columbine High School shooting and how gun laws should be enacted to society today. If we had effective gun control laws in place, it would be harder

Gun laws were being looked upon to be enforced for quite a while. People were upset because guns were open to almost anyone and they did not seem to like that idea. As stated by the article, “The Gun-Free Zones”, people quickly placed the blame on gun regulations because they did not let the military have access to any type of weapons so, the military was disarmed. This put the military in an unfair situation because they did not have the opportunity to help stop the shooting. In “The Gun-Free Zones”, it says, “The universal right-wing truth now is that it's all Bill Clinton's fault because in 1993 he banned guns on military bases, making it impossible for soldiers to respond to eruptions of hostile gunfire” (Boehlert). The reason why the blame was put on Bill Clinton, as stated in the article, was because he could have passed the law of gun control that minors or criminals should not own guns, yet he decided that it was best to ban it from military bases. It was very unlikely that the soldiers could react to the shootings since they had no weapons on them. If Clinton had just banned guns from the bad guys, after the tragic massacre, there would have been no killings. Since the law was not passed, it seems like Clinton did not care as much because he did not do anything better to fix the gun problem. Instead, he handled the situation in a way that no one …show more content…
Schools all over the world have become a bit stricter about the way that they handle certain situations. They are also doing a better job to make sure that they keep their environment safer. For instance, it was decided that the school should be closed for a while until everywhere was examined and that there were no signs of any problems. In “The Columbine High Massacre,” it states, “The Columbine Shooting on April 20, 1999 had an enormous impact on not just their town, but nationwide. Schools, and other places have become so much more aware of their surroundings and how to go about things” (Madeline). The school staffs had a huge meeting which involved support for the people who got killed and they talked about what must be done differently to prevent shootings to ever take place again in the school. After this took place, the rules were stricter. Students could not bring minor items to school such as a nail clipper because that would result into the student getting suspended. If the rules at school were broken at all, students would face profound consequences. Everything that happened on this day, to the teachers, and to the kids changed the way people acted around the school. The school became more serious about what goes on around them because the whole situation had a massive impact on how they focused on the school shooting. The impact that this shooting had on
It was April 20 1999 and Columbine high school was in session 2 fellow students were outside but nobody knew and they had propane bombs in the cafeteria kitchen and then at 11:19 am they were supposed to go off but then this happened. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris were on tv and the news recorded everything.
Columbine High School Shooting: Why did Columbine occur and what can be learned from it?
The New York Times Editorial board stated their displeasure with the way the gun laws have been handled in their article End the Gun Epidemic in America. The article discusses how after the shooting in San Bernardino, California the elected leaders of this country give the same speech offering prayers to the victims and then reject the “most basic restrictions.” In this article the authors describe killing sprees as “acts of terrorism” and how the leaders of this country do nothing to top these incidents. Although they are not extremists of this topic. They don’t wish to outlaw guns as a whole but just the automatic weapons used in war. These writers are definitely pro gun control, and had an effective way explaining their position.
It was a day of mourning in Littleton, Colorado after Columbine High School suffered a deadly shooting, leaving 12 students and 1 teacher dead along with 24 others injured. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold are the perpetrators responsible for the massacre, both students in their last year at the school. Many people are left curious as to why the two boys did what they did. Was the intent to kill as many people as they could? Investigators later found that around 11:10am the pair walked into the cafeteria and placed 2 duffel bags each containing a 20 pound propane bomb set to explode at 11:17am. The boys then went back outside to wait for the bombs to go off. When the bombs failed to detonate, Eric and Dylan began their shooting spree. “Do You
The beginning of the nonfiction, Columbine by Dave Cullen, takes place four days before the Columbine massacre at Columbine High School’s assembly in Littleton, Colorado, just before the weekend of Prom. Ironically, Principal DeAngelis, the one who had hosted the school assembly, provides a lecture of everyone coming back alive and safe after prom. Soon after, on April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold arrived at Columbine High School with two bombs based on portable propane bottles, decoy bombs in their cars and across town, and dozens of small pipe bombs, along with guns and ammunition. Their original and only plan was to shoot anyone and everyone who escapes from the building after the bombs detonated, and they had expected to be shot to death by police; however, their plans partly failed when the bombs planted inside the school did not go off. Although their plan of distraction did not succeed as expected, Harris and Klebold entered the school and began shooting and firing pipe bombs for a little over fifteen minutes. Afterwards, after roaming the school for a short amount of time, they returned to the library where most of their victims had died, set off one final bomb, and committed suicide by shooting themselves. Although their bombing failed, the ensued shooting resulted in a new era of school violence and had left “a lasting impression on the world.” However, by the end of the day, the horrifying incident was falsely blamed on bullying, the popular “Goth”
The crime was the worst school shooting in U.S. history (until 33 people, including the gunman, were killed in the Virginia Tech shooting on April 16, 2007)and prompted a national debate on gun control and school safety, as well as a major investigation to determine what motivated the teen gunmen. In the days quickly following the shootings, it was predicted that Klebold and Harris purposely chose jocks, minorities and Christians as their victims. At
In particular, the shooting has brought attention to school safety throughout the country and beyond, has contributed to children’s fears, and possibly inspired future generations of shooters.
The day of the Columbine Massacre is a day that will forever burn a hole in America’s heart. The nation was shocked at the news that on April 20, 1999, high school seniors Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris went on a precisely planned shooting rampage at their school, Columbine High School. This event killed a total of thirteen individuals, including twelve students and one highly heroic teacher, and wounded many. The reportedly troubled boys had often accused others of having bullied them, which raised the question of how apparent the warning signs were of their rampage. Because this incident was one of the first known school shootings throughout the nation, many of its specific details were taken into account to help protect schools all
The exact reason of why the committed this crime to this day is unclear. The personal journals of the two perpetrators referenced that they wanted the event to compete with those of the Oklahoma City bombing and other deadly events that happened in the United States around the 1900s. The attack is known as the deadliest High School shooting in the history of the United States.
After the tragic events that took place at the elementary school, the entire nation amped up on security for all schools. There also became gun laws and different restrictions to buy certain weapons. Also, many families switched schools and families throughout the nation looked into the location of their school and the safety that if brought to their children. There was a yearlong investigation on the shooter and this case really paralleled to the cases of Columbine and Virginia Tech. All of the shooters were violent and quiet kids who suffered from a mental disorder. Columbine was a really big event that got the ball rolling for the other two for it was found that Columbine was the inspiration for other
The Columbine shooting is known as the bloodiest, also the deadliest school shooting in U.S history. On April 20, 1999 twelve teenagers, also one adult were killed in a massive school shooting. Dylan Klebold a seventeen year old and Eric Harris a eighteen year old were students at Columbine High School in Colorado. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris were arrested in January 1998 for stealing items in a van. In March 1998 Harris threatened Brooks Brown to kill him and would love to kill people. Columbine shooting greatly impacted America due to the price of firearms and movement to firearms school safety was an issue and made schools safer with more enforced rules and safety hazards, people culturally started to become more feared.
Since the day America was shocked to hear reports of a school shooting on April 20, 1999, America’s schools have changed in order provide a safer environment, ease any fears among the public, and protect students. The Columbine Massacre triggered an earthquake of changes throughout the school system. Like any earthquake, the shock was felt, then there may be a few aftershocks, but eventually it subsides and things become more lenient. Is this a problem? To figure this out we must look at the changes the massacre brought, their progression, and furthermore, where we are now.
This shooting was the worst in United States history, and it left families speechless and people in disarray. Two teens committed the treacherous actions of that day. The speculations were that they did this because of bullying, goth culture, or music or video games; these though were all just theories and were never proven(history). After this event, schools, venues, and events have endured grand security increases in the danger of shooters or other violence. Throughout my school days, I have wondered why we do the silly lock down drills at school, but in reality, lives could be saved in the event of an actual attack on my school. I realized this my eight grade year at Guntown Middle School. There was an unidentified man on campus, a code red lock down would amerce. I still remember sitting under my desk, shaking, and almost to tears. I did not want to be remembered as just another statistic if it was a shooter. But it had been our lucky day, the man who had stirred up all the commotion was just looking for the school’s office. Those fears I experienced however, would stay with me. We all believe that we are invincible and that it would never be us. However, with the world as it is today, no one is safe. I have been affected by the Columbine shooting through security changes in schools that I
Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold changed the way schools handle threat precautions. The secrets they left us; the boys being outcasts, bullies, and the trench coat mafia, leave us with a horrible tragedy to deal with. Which are just some of the proven myths in the shooting of Columbine.
On April 20th of the year 1999, two high school students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, went armed into Columbine High School with guns, knives, and a multitude of bombs. The result was the slaughter of twelve students and one teacher. The gunners also turned the guns
