When a mass shooting or other act of terrorism occurs the first thing thought is: who is the person who did it? Are they white? Are they Islamic? After the basic questions are established there is next to no more talk or news coverage about the person who committed the crime. The only concern is the politics behind it. The media is more concerned about what the president has to say about the overall shooting, not about why this person had a gun or what caused this said person to committee the horrible crime. As the article Why mass shootings don't change the politics of gun control, in 1 Trump quote claims; “The reality is that for most conservatives and most gun owners, these mass shootings don't move the needle on gun control because, …show more content…
Dragging away from the true repulsion of what happened. Rather than making a statement that would try and address what happened or effort to come up with a solution for stopping the same thing from happening in the future; attention is drawn to the debate of whether the massacre was the gun’s fault or the fault of a mental illness.
Furthermore, the article goes on to mention how; “To gun owners, the biggest threat in the aftermath of these mass shootings is not that it might happen again in their community but that politicians will use the shooting as a way to begin to take away their guns.” (Cillizza) The media is pulling a lot of interest into the element that because of this mass shooting people are less worried about it happening again and are more apprehensive that more laws are to be created to take away their guns. Instead of focusing on the fact that something like this mass shooting could happen again the media choices to focus on anything else; i.e. gun control. This quote alone aids Orwell’s original fear that people would accept whatever the media was feeding them as true. By writing about how the biggest fear of the members of the National Rifle Association is that in the aftermath of the mass shooting the members are more worried about having their guns taken way than finding a better way to regulate how easily accessible guns are.
Gun control laws and concerns over said laws have over shadowed the main problem
According to Effective Crisis Communication: Moving from Crisis to Opportunity, “A critical factor in resolving any crisis is determining the cause. Once the cause has been identified, some of the uncertainty is cleared up, and corrective action can be taken. The primary problem here, however, is that identifying the cause of the crisis often takes a great deal of time.” One reason for uncertainty after gun violence results from the diverse perceptions of threat found between the two party system of the United States, the democrat and republicans, which hinders the progress of finding a solution. With democrats protesting for stricter gun control while republicans hold true to the second amendment, determining the cause of mass shootings becomes a tug of war battle between the two parties. Ulmer continues, “Many different independent and governmental groups may work to identify the cause of a crisis, and they may often disagree with or question the veracity of the other groups’ evidence” which is evident throughout media coverage (Ulmer, p. 47-48). Even though major media outlets provided minimum live coverage of the event, which could have been a hazard to public safety with an unidentified gunman on the loose, they wasted little time focusing the event to fit their network’s
Gun control is a vital necessity to the welfare of our nation. Many people out there are supporting the “anti- gun control cause” with the excuse of “self-defense”. I believe that not everyone will handle a gun for self-defense. The possession of a gun is a sign of power. One of the bigger ambitions that one has is to have power and the easier it is to obtain a gun; the faster a criminal will gain power over an innocent person. When one is in possession of a gun, that person has complete control of their actions and may act upon the weapon however the person may please even if they know that their action will cause harm to defense-less people. There are many deaths caused by guns out there that could
This article analyzes three cases of mass shootings that took place within the United States, their most recent example being the mass shooting that took place at the University of California in Santa Barbara. Within each case, the study interestingly noted that the media often highlighted "individual aspects" of the shooter, such as internal struggles with mental health and histories of harassment by peers. Blum and Jaworski found that the media does not often include social factors, such as types of strain suffered by the shooters nor the fact that many were isolated from social interaction and connection
Seventeen people are dead in the state of Florida because of gun control. In the article, “Famous Speeches: "We call BS," Emma Gonzalez's speech to gun advocates”, by Emma Gonzalez gives a perspective of one mass shooting situation. Also in article, “Issue Overview: Guns in America”, by Bloomberg gives a perspective of many mass shooting situations. These two serious articles equate in many ways, although they differentiate in numerous ways as well.
274 days in the past year have had one specific theme in common: each of them has been the setting for a mass shooting, on campuses or in public places that resulted in the injury or death of multiple bystanders (Ingraham). When violent information reaches social media, it results in issues such as gun-control policy and tighter security in public places to rise to prominence on political agendas. In addition, the consideration of other issues found in shootings, such as mental and social disorders, which cannot be immediately corrected through policy , become smothered by the debate of gun-control and similar measures. I propose that the reason for this preference to swiftly control mass shootings through arbitrary gun laws results from the innate
“You won’t get gun control by disarming law-abiding citizens. There is only one way to get real gun control: Disarm the thugs and the criminals, lock them up and if you actually don’t throw the key, at least lose it for a long time....It’s a nasty truth ,but those who seek to inflict harm are not fazed with gun controllers.”- Ronald Reagen. Limiting gun ownership to mentally stable, law abiding citizens will do nothing positive for this country. Mr.Reagen couldn’t have said it any better in that quote.
In December 2012, 20 years old Alan Lonzon kill 20 children in the Sandy hook elementary middle school. Could gun control prevent this deadly mass murder? Gun control has been a very controversial topic in United States. Our government should care about this issue because innocent people die every year in the United States. Gun control will not prevent mass shooting because guns are accessible to everybody and 3D guns see it his fi, most of the time mental health can be the reason why those horrible events occur. In my opinion the government should think another way to prevent gun control.
Should Gun control have more restrictions or less restrictions? This issue has been going around for a really long time. The second amendment helps balance the situation because of course it is the right to bear arms, and having more restrictions is where it balances it out. You have the right to have a gun, but restrictions are needed. The best way gun control is measured is generally by surveys taken by people. Gun control really becomes an issue when there is crime, shootings, self-defense, etc. Some states have had different acts for different reasons and it all just depends on the situation the state is in. The main concern about gun control is safety for the people, and that is the issue. More restrictions for less deaths, or less for
The mass shooting in Roseburg, Ore. has reignited debate over gun control and gun rights in the United States.
Guns have been around since the 1300s, from the muskets to the very high-tech guns we have today. Today guns are used for sports, like hunting and competition and also guns are used in self-defense in the protection of ourselves and families and others. The military uses guns and various other tactics to protect and fight for our country, also guns are used in law enforcement such as the police. But with these guns comes hostility from people when shootings and related events that contain guns happen in the U.S. The controversy over gun control has been around for a very long time. Gun control is always being spoken about. If any crime is caused by a gun, controlling guns or “Gun control” is the
Gun control is a heated topic for Americans everywhere, but it is one that needs to be settled and agreed upon. Gun control has been around since after the Civil War. It was first used to keep former black slaves from having the right to own guns. (The reason for this is because some white people were afraid there could be a rebellion from blacks who were still angry about being enslaved and their rights being taken away.) a little long and wordy
In the wake of all the school shootings in the past fifteen years gun control has become a more serious issue than before. Gun control has always been a concern in the United States, but not until the first major school shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado did this topic become a reality to the American public. In 1999, this massacre left fifteen people dead including the assassins. And just recently on March 5, 2001 did the tradition continue, when Charles Andrew Williams killed two classmates, leaving many injured in Santee California.
Congress has passed many laws on this subject and there really has not been an effect. Gun control has been a controversial issue for years, but the citizens of the United States have a right to own guns and the Constitution states that. On the government's path to control guns they created the Brady Act. Handgun Control Incorporated is the major organization for lobbying, and introducing legislation on gun control. It is headed by Sarah Brady, wife of former White House Press Secretary James Brady. James Brady was shot during an attempt on President Reagan's life in 1981. Sarah is the one responsible for introducing this bill. This bill was
The past year has been filled with a concerning number of shootings. To help stop this horrifying number from rising, the United States needs to establish regulations on guns to ensure that those with a weapon are both safe and know what they are doing. By establishing gun regulations, the United States still follows the second amendment, however, the government can prevent those who mean to do harm from obtaining guns. Setting regulations does not mean getting rid of all guns in the United States, rather, set limitations to those who are buying them. The prohibition proves that banning something completely causes a higher demand rather than lowering it.
A social problem is defined as a condition that citizens, or people of a community perceive as being negative or undesirable. There are many different types of social problems such as: poverty, domestic violence, abortion, discrimination, racism, gun control and gun rights. Guns have been a hotly debated topic for decades now. There are many different reasons for why it is such a prevalent issue such as, safety, constitutional rights, self defense, mental health, and many more. The two sides of gun control and gun rights see the social issue differently. One side views guns as a safety hazard that needs to be fixed, and the pro gun side view that guns are a Constitutional right that should not be infringed. No matter what side you are on it is impossible to ignore this problem in our society today.
