Griffith's Short Story

“She backed away from the door but did not want to go into another part of the house, as if it would give him permission to come through the door” (Oates 7-8). Arnold Friend has a mental hold of Connie. Connie felt as if any action she made would cause a negative reaction from Arnold, letting him get closer. Connie felt as if she was being taken over. “She felt her breath start jerking back and forth in her lungs as if it were something Arnold Friend was stabbing her with again and again with no tenderness” (Oates 8).

Griffith Montrose had lived through hell twelve years ago. Beaten for no other reason than he was gay, Griffith had ended up in the hospital for two months recovering from his injuries inflicted by his boyfriend’s father. Not only did Stone do nothing to stop his father from hitting Griffith, but the man had abandoned him to heal on his own.

It was Friday night, everybody was asleep, and it was time. So John ran down the stairs quite like a mouse and very meticulously, and then slipped out the window to walk over to mitch’s house. When he got there, there was music blasting, lights flashing, and people all over the place. Before he went to join the fun, John took a deep breath and thought whatever happens… happens. While John was at the party he felt pressured to partake in many bad behaviors, along with his friends while the were drinking and everything. John thought to himself about what he should do, should I go home and face the consequences, or stay and possibly face even more trouble. So he decided to stay and just see what happens. As if it had been washed away (covered by lavender dish soap) but still stayed. A phantom that traced every shadow. Johns basement smelled a bit more like urine, a bit less like lavender. Instead there was a shadow of vodka and shouting and sweat. If you sat on johns couch you could stare at the green sponge painted walls and think about how youre parents must think you smoke from all the sents you drag home. You can think about how the boy sitting next to you was in your kindergarten class. How he road the ferry with you to middle school. How you played connect the dots with his acne in your head. How his name is timothy, you think. You can pretend there isnt a needle in his arm, his left arm. You can pretend his right arm isnt pressed against your thigh. You can think about how boys named timothy shouldn't ever have needle in their arms, how it feels wrong, how he wears adult hood, the gohst of a mustache and manhood, like a mask. You can concentrate on the needle. Remember how often youve said no to that. How often youve defended the hypocripsy of the white capped orange bottles at the bottom of your closet. That grow like dragon gold. You can concentrate on anything except the hand that creeps up lazily as if uncertain, inconsistently twisting skin against skin. Compare him, timothy, to a g train. Impractical, flying upward. A problem with no clear, or possible, solution. Ignore it, ignore the fadeing light, ignore the drink in your hand, ignore the pulse in your head, ignore the hand as it finds its way under cloth. Ignore it because when it, timothy, turns and presses and demands, you cannot scream because you dont know

This thought, however, ignores the insecurities she has and the decision she has already made in her mind. After all, Connie did know that Arnold Friend was dangerous, she was wary of him when he first showed up and when she makes out his age she gets put on her guard even more and eventually threatens to call the police on them. Then, Arnold says words that ring through the mind of Connie: “…I promise it won’t last long and you’ll like me the way you get to like people you’re close to. You will. It’s all over for you here…”. These short sentences echo through her mind as they remind her of the relationships she has in her life. Connie realizes that will never be intimate with Arnold Friend because she cannot have a relationship like that with anybody. Because of her insecurities, Connie thinks she deserves this ending. She will go with Arnold not because she wants to, but because nothing can hold her, back she wanted to explore and have an adventure, but the adventure was thrust upon her too

In the short story, Wilhelm by Gabrielle Roy, a girl’s mother is the primary reason for the demise of Wilhelm and her daughter’s relationship. She is at fault as she compels her daughter to see Wilhelm’s imperfections before his admirable qualities, creates the distance between the two lovebirds and changes her personality shortly after Wilhelm came into the picture. Arnold Friend arrives at Connie’s home when her family was out , and implores that she go with him “to a nice field, out in the country here where it smells so nice and it’s sunny”. He tries to be relatable a first, claiming to have the same music taste as Connie and even declares to be her friend and lover. Arnold Friend knows everything about Connie, seeming to be boundless and powerful, even narrating what is happening at the barbeque, and threatening Connie that if she doesn’t cooperate, her family will be murdered. He uses all these techniques to manipulate Connie's mind which causes her to have internal and psychological struggles, creating a thin border of what is real and what is not. When Arnold Friend threatens her, she tries to call for help, but he causes her to lose her grip with reality, making her mind believe the phone started roaring, “She began to scream into the phone, into the roaring.”, which symbolizes her hopelessness for rescue. Arnold Friend got Connie to surrender herself to him, which portrays the change in consciousness she had from her egotistical ways to doing the most altruistic act of sacrificing herself for her family's lives. Connie was not the same fearful girl anymore, “He ran a fingernail down the screen and the noise did not make Connie shiver, as it

My mind was going one thousand miles per hour, those words haunting my head. Hot tears flowed down my face as the words sunk in. I slumped in my seat feeling exhausted and too cold for this warm house. My father’s arms reached for me, trying to comfort me. He wouldn’t understand the mental loss that was turning into physical pain. My chest heaved for air, trying to get this drowning feeling out of these thoughts that envelope me bringing a soft cloak of anxiety. “Not again, please.”

These thoughts have been consuming Dan's mind for the past two hours, slowly filling his body with great amounts of stress and anxiety, which eventually overcame his entire being and took control of his actions, ensuing in the forceful push of his schoolwork out of his sight. Tears began to develop in his brown eyes, but he immediately blinked them away, not wanting to feel even worse about himself. After all, crying would make Dan assume that he has lost the battle between himself and...himself. Griffin’s story mainly involves specific figures in history, but some stories involve members of her own family interacting with her. This happens due to the fact that during some events mentioned, like Himmler’s participation in the Holocaust, Griffin was not old enough or even alive. Thus she has to use some of her family’s opinions and existence during the time period to show more era-related secrets. For example, both the story with her grandfather and the story with her mother’s mother are technically not her own; however, she uses her role in the stories to interact with the culture at that time. Griffin’s personal story interacts with cultural stories because she effectively manages to connect two or more experiences that seem completely and utterly different while drawing parallels.

As my car climbed the hill, my heart sunk into my stomach. I parked as far away from my friends as I could and quickly exited the car, not once looking at them. Now it was every man for himself.
