Introduction Cultures are different around the world. There often is multiple cultures in a country. Greece’s culture is different in many ways from other cultures, for example family, tradition and religion are three of many key factors in Greece(www.everyculture.com). Family, tradition and religion can be popular values for other cultures too, but all cultures have different values. Families in Greece are affected by poverty, religion and tradition. In Greece, family is very important, where the father is the authority figure and the mother is the caring parent. Parents believe that children are their main priority in the family and treat them with love and respect; parenting them to value religion, tradition and family life with high expectations …show more content…
Religion plays an important role in family life especially in Greece. In Greece, 98% Greeks are Christian Orthodox (www.greeka.com). Greece and Russia are the only ones with such a large Christian Orthodox population. How religion effects family life is because of strong religious beliefs, families have a better chance of staying together. If you have a high respect for religion you have more investment in marriage, higher quality of marital life and a less likelihood to divorce (www.familyfacts.org). The family life is affected by marriage and divorce. If parents have a bad marriage it effects the children in a negative way it could also effect teenagers in the future. Teens who consider religion important will consider marriage important in their lives and are more likely to expect to be married in the future compare to youth who consider religion less important (www.familyfacts.org). How religion in Greece effects their lifestyle, religion in Canada also effects our lifestyle. In Canada a majority of the population are Christians. They represent 72% of the population(www.statisticscanada.ca). Christianity and Christian orthodox have similar beliefs between the two religions. Both religions have a high regard to marriage and worship. I find that families who have a religious belief are a close family. They go to Church together to worship as a family and that brings them closer together …show more content…
In Greece the mothers main goal is to care for the child and that is it they can work but most choose not to. For mothers in Greece, it is more common for her to stay at home and not work while in our culture it is common that the mother cares for the child but also works. The father in Greece is authoritative and provides for the family. In Canada the father and mother are likely to share the authority role and the role to provide for the family.
Expectations for Children
Expectations for children in Greece are to strive in school and stay connected to their religion and their family life. Since family life is important in Greece the parents want the children to be close to every family member. I think that the parents in Greece want their children to be happy but to value the things they do which is religion, tradition and family. Our culture and Greece culture expect the same for their children.
Nicole Glass, author of “Examining the Benefits of Greek Life.” explains in her article how Greek life can help students
A person’s worth and identity in modern culture is not determined solely by the principles of either of the two Greek cultures; rather, both have contributed aspects to the system we have. The
Through the matriarchal religion, the culture of the pre-Greek inhabitants differed from the Greeks in a way that the mother was the head of the family unlike the male dominated culture of the Greeks. The pre-Greek tribes saw motherhood as the most sacred, mysterious and miraculous event, and the pre-Greeks valued the female children than the male and the most favored was the last female child since she will keep the family line longer (Rosenburg, 1984). And as stated by Rosenburg, 1984: “The life of the family centered upon the mother, the hearth, and the home. Mother love was a humane and pacifying influence, creating an aura of honor, trust, hospitality, generosity, concern, and reverence
Coming into college most students struggle to find a place where they fit in. Greek life provides individuals the opportunity to find people that are similar to them and share the same values as they do. In the article
The first of two notable periods of Greek immigration to the United States began in the 1800s and continued until the 1920s. According to chnm.gmu.edu (n.d.), the economic crisis in Greece caused many Greek families to send their sons to the United States to make money to send back home to Greece. The second wave of Greek immigration occurred after World War II with the passage of Immigration and National Origins Act of 1965. This opened the door for many Greeks who had family already living in the United States, to come join them. The second generation of Greek Americans had been established by this time and they had established Greek communities as well as various businesses that were thriving.
American sport culture has had many influences that impact how they are today. I believe the ancient greek culture, and society accurately reflects on our sports. There are many variables to american sports that were taken from the greek society. Americans have open gyms and mass training sessions like the greeks had. American sports also have big festivals with sports competitions like the greeks has. Americans also use sports to train, and some to train for war just like the greeks did as well. There are many more ways american sports reflect the greeks, but those are just a few examples.
Women in the society of Ancient Greece were expected to be very emotional and nurturing to their children. They are also defined as very dependent and weak creatures. On the other hand, men in Ancient Greece were expected to be strong and intelligent.
pic. Greek life is, in many ways, different from modern day American culture. People in ancient Greek civilization thought, believed, and treated people differently than modern day Western civilization does. Although what went on in Greek culture at the time may seem very strange or different to children who have grown up in America their whole lives, that does not mean that Greek life was, by definition, strange. The Greek culture is like any culture in that it is different in its own way. It has aspects and objects that are unique to the culture that others would find interesting. Even some objects, for example: bow and arrows, swords, spears, and others, are the same objects other cultures have, yet they may look slightly different from the objects in other cultures. Ancient civilizations did not have mass manufacturing as modern day America. No weapon, item of clothing, or dish was the exact same.
Ancient Greek culture beliefs and social ideas have helped us with American Education because it influences us with what is going on today. Ancient Greek influence affected us today with democracy, Ancient Greek actually created the world’s first democracy. Ancient Greek have helped us along with Math, History, and Literature. As a matter of fact, Ancient Greek where the first to invent new things along the years. For example, Greek where the first civilization to use the alphabet. Greek have help us over million years.
These two different worlds of conflict are between family devotion and self-realization. There is a strong pressure to obey their parent’s rules, remain a part of the community and to marry well off and bear children. Male Greeks have more freedom then girls. Women remain close to their mothers before and even after marriage (Jugrens, n.d.). Education and a career comes second, and is at times viewed unwomanly. Man are to pursue a higher education. Actually, “The 1990 Census reports that twice as many Greek men as women received university degrees, with significantly proportion of men going on to receive advanced degrees” (Jugrens,
“Greek civilization is alive; it moves in every breath of mind that we breathe; so much of it remains that none of us in one lifetime could absorb it all.” Ancient Greeks are known to be one of the greatest and most advanced people and have left behind a legacy that helped define the Western civilization. Cultural diffusion helped spread Greek culture all over the world, and its effects can still be felt today in almost every aspect. Greek culture has greatly affected different parts of my daily life including architecture, food, government, inventions, music, religion, and education.
I never thought that the Greeks wouldn’t eat much of a breakfast also i didn’t know that most of the food in Greece were imported from all around them. The foods they eat also don’t seem really different from what we would eat here. I knew very little about what they wore in Greece. I didn’t think that they wore modern clothes like us currently. There houses inside are partially the same way our houses would be like in the inside but, on the outside the houses aren’t much
Ancient Greece believed that art is a depiction of the one's culture and individualism. Ancient Greece helped shaped the world of today. We have many similarities with ancient Greece today. Ancient Greece had three different column styles the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian as a substitute wood for building temples. These three different styles are still been used today in various mode like the Greeks.
Women’s role in Greece can be seen when one first begins to do research on the subject. The subject of women in Greece is coupled with the subject of slaves. This is the earliest classification of women in Greek society. Although women were treated differently from city to city the basic premise of that treatment never changed. Women were only useful for establishing a bloodline that could carry on the family name and give the proper last rites to the husband. However, women did form life long bonds with their husbands and found love in arranged marriages. Women in Athenian Society Women are “defined as near slaves, or as perpetual minors” in Athenian society (The Greek World, pg. 200). For women life didn’t
Both religion and family are essential parts in the running of any society. Religion is the belief in a supernatural authority which unites a group of people. Normally, a family consist of people who share the same bloodline; however, it may also consist of a group of people who are legally bonded such as adopted children. In whatever type of the family, strong and healthy bonds are necessary. Among other factors, religion plays a significant role in strengthening the family bonds. In many religions of the world, family comes first. For instance, in the Bible, God created man and woman so that they could reproduce and fill the earth. In addition, God gave man power over all other living things. This shows how important people are to God. Notably, various religions have different values and expectations on families. For instance, Islam allows polygamy while Christianity allows monogamy. The relationship between family and religion can be evaluated using the functionalism perspective of sociology. This essay explains the functionalism perspective and analyses the interactions between religion and family.
