Great White Shark Adaptations

In John Bauer’s short story, “The Truth About Sharks”, Beth is treated unfairly by the security guard. To begin with, the security guard shouts at Beth due to the misunderstanding about her shoplifting, which caused her to cry and become uncomfortable. As Beth is talking to the security officer, the officer angrily shouts and causes Beth to say “ you’re hurting me!”(133). In the article "Great White Sharks" x by Peter Benchley, Mr. Benchley (repeats-use pronoun) is positively biased. He uses connotation to persuade the reader, x and loaded language to help make sharks look graceful, x and beautiful (compound). On page 891, the author uses loaded langue to persuade the reader that sharks are magnificent, when he states, "We are learning--bit by bit, anecdote by anecdote--more about these magnificent predators. We must hope that we're learning enough to save them before, through ignorance and inadvertence, we destroy them." This shows that Peter Benchley uses a positive bias because he uses positive loaded langue x (Which words are loaded?)

Hammerheads are usually talked about as if it was just one creature but in a matter of fact the hammerhead shark comes in nine different species. The largest of the species is the Great hammerhead shark, they can range from 3.4m to 6m long and 225kg to 450kg in weight, the females are larger than the males but males mature at an earlier stage, although smaller sizes are more commonly found. The hammerhead sharks habitat is offshore in water depths of 300m, also in shallow coastal areas like continental shelves and lagoons. The hammerhead moves poleward when migrating to get to cooler waters when it is the summer season, which is caused by the abiotic factors. The young swim mostly in shallow waters along the shores almost all over the world

The Great White Shark is the top predator of the ocean, meaning that it is not hunted by other animals in the waters. The Great White has been listed as an endangered species due to the over hunting of them for shark teeth and there fins.

The Mako shark is a very unique species of cartilaginous fish in the Lamnidae family (Col-Spector, Audrey, “MAKO SHARK- Enchanted Learning Software"). This pelagic swimmer is the fastest shark that has ever been observed in the ocean, clocking in at speeds up to 60 mph (Col-Spector). Its streamlined body allows it to swim at faster speeds than most other fish, making it a highly successful predator. “Schooling fish, including tuna, herring, mackerel, swordfish, and porpoise” are popular among the diet of the Makos (Col-Spector). Although they like to prey specifically on schooling fish, Makos eat just about anything they come across (Col-Spector). The Mako sharks physical features and social characteristics is what sets it apart from other species of the deep.

The Mako Shark also known as the blue pointer, or as the bonito shark. The scientific name for the Mako shark is Isurus oxyrinchus. The Mako shark has a snout but it isn’t as pointed as other shark’s, It’s fins are are as long as it’s head and broad-tipped. A Mako shark is a slower swimmer than the shortfin Mako shark, that’s because The regular Mako shark has longer fins which makes the Mako shark swim slower, it is able to swim up to 20 miles per pounds. The Mako shark is a very fast, aggressive shark compared to most sharks. The shortfin Mako shark has been blamed for many reported shark attacks on humans. The mass of an adult Mako shark is 610 pounds.

On ABC’s Good Morning America’s Weekend Adventure special, viewers were taking to new depths of excitement and adventure as tourists went face to face with the beautiful Caribbean Reef Shark off the coast of the Bahamas. The video clip we saw showed tourists from around the world getting up close and personal with these huge, majestic fish. Participates were ecstatic after there trip down under with the fish. One tourist says, “No other dive compares to it”. How have these people been attracted to these adventure dives, and what makes these so appealing? Those are the questions I will explain in the next paragraph.

Unluckily, after many rescue and first aid attempts to stop the bleeding he passed away at the scene. Most killings triggered by shark incidents are from blood loss as arteries are frequently shattered. The distress and fright the bystanders would’ve sensed that day from the attack would encourage them to believe killing the Great White is the best clarification. ‘This shark has tasted human flesh and will kill again. This ‘rogue’ shark must be hunted down and killed so that our beaches are safe’ (SACE Stage 2 , n.d.). However, as a personal opinion; I believe the Great White Shark should be conserved as there is no real advantage if its shot. The attack itself is such a rare event, it tends to only be one or two bites, and consequently scientists believe it a fault when these incidents/attacks happen. ‘Shark attacks on humans only occur when the shark mistakes us for their normal prey of seals and dolphins and then, realising their mistake, sense us by their bite and spit us out’ another reason why they are attacking us is because us humans are swimming in their environment which they call home and they are just protecting themselves just like we protect ourselves from danger. Many animals migrate for different reasons. Ducks migrate to warmer weather when the seasons change. Humpback Whales migrate to follow their food source krill. The Great Hammerhead was known to have movements, but it was not-believed that the movement was in patterns like a yearly migration of most animals that migrate. The Great Hammerhead shark is a large shark and can grow up to 20 feet and weigh in at over 1,000 pounds. Until Recently it was unknown if the Great Hammerhead Shark migrated.

Who wouldn’t want a Hammerhead Shark as a pet? Even though I think sharks are awesome, and other people agree there’s a few little things you might want to consider before you think you could have one as your man’s best friend. Great hammerhead sharks appear to adapt well to their environments. One of their capabilities is that they are opportunistic predators and are willing to eat anything they can get their hands on to help them survive. Consequently, one concern would be the changes in temperature in the water. The hammerhead does not seem to adapt well to the cooler waters.

They can swim at thirty five miles per hour(Institution, Smithsonian). They also have seven rows of teeth(Institution, Smithsonian). They have a total of three hundred triangular serrated teeth(Bradford). When Great white sharks are in the womb they supposedly swallow their own teeth. The first time they sink their teeth in their prey, it is called a sample bite. Sharks normally go up to their prey and taste them to make sure the want to eat them(Bradford). That's why most attacks are not fatal, because the shark tastes the human and thinks yuck that is not what I want to eat and spits them back out. They don't normally mistake humans for food considering only five to ten happen every year(Bradford). Once they sense food they need to get to it fast. They can swim up to fifteen miles per hour(1). Great Whites have to be fast at Cape Cod because they can not sneak attack the

jaw structure. The teeth are actually modified, enlarged placoid scales. The teeth aren’t anchored in the jaw; they are just embedded on the gums. Unfortunately, when the great white shark eats on its prey, it sometimes loses or breaks the tooth by the flesh. Luckily, sharks have developed a special feature that enables it to replace its missing tooth. They have developed rows of teeth, each tooth moving up to replace the missing one. A whole broken row of teeth can be replenished, just like a conveyor belt. Each tooth, though, has a different shape, changing according to its necessity. The great white has triangular, serrated-edged teeth anywhere from one to two inches long. With this feature, the shark is able to tear through the flesh for its meal. The jaw of the shark is made up of strong bone tissue. It must be very powerful because the shark is designed for feeding.

A shark has multiple rows of teeth. The mouth of sharks is in the front of the head. In some species, sharks teeth are replaced as much as once a week. Some sharks have teeth used to crush and grind. These are some what like what humans have. They also have sharp teeth. These can be compared to incisors that humans have. These types of teeth are very important to sharks because they are carnivores and depend on their teeth in order to eat their prey. A sharks body in covered by scales which cover their bodies. These scales make the skin of a shark very rough and strong.
