The Great Depression was an of hardship for many, and kept several people from accomplishing even the most basic goals and dreams. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck tells a story of two friends, George Milton and Lennie Small, and their search for a better life in rural California. George, a smart but small and wiry laborer, and Lennie, a giant man who is mentally challenged, take jobs bucking barley on a large ranch outside of Salinas and try to save money to get a place of their own. On the ranch, they encounter many who have dreams of their own, but Steinbeck manipulates his characters, particularly Lennie, to demonstrate that not everyone get what they want, even if they work hard for it. In the story Of Mice and Men George has a big …show more content…
“A tall man stood in the doorway. He held a crushed Stetson hat under his arm while he combed his long, black, damp hair straight back. Like the others he wore blue jeans and a short denim jacket. When he had finished combing his hair he moved into the room, and he moved with a majesty achieved only by royalty and master craftsmen. He was a jerkline skinner, the prince of the ranch, capable of driving ten, sixteen, even twenty mules with a single line to the leaders. He was capable of killing a fly on the wheeler's butt with a bull whip without touching the mule. There was a gravity in his manner and a quiet so profound that all talk stopped when he spoke. His authority was so great that his word was taken on any subject, be it politics or love. This was Slim, the jerkline skinner.” pg.33. Everybody looks up to Slim he's like royalty on the ranch. If Slim says something everyone agrees to it. Even though he's probably not the strongest he's the most respected out of everybody no one messes with slim. “I don't see no reason for it," said Carlson. He went to his bunk, pulled his bag from underneath it and took out a Luger pistol. "Le's get it over with," he said. "We can't sleep with him stinkin' around in here." He put the pistol in his hip pocket. Candy looked a long time at Slim to try to find some reversal. And Slim gave him none.”pg.47 When everybody wanted to kill Candy’s dog he looked toward Slim for help and once he …show more content…
“Come on, ya big bastard. Get up on your feet. No big son-of-a-bitch is gonna laugh at me. I'll show ya who's yella. Lennie looked helplessly at George, and then he got up and tried to retreat. Curley was balanced and poised. He slashed at Lennie with his left, and then smashed down his nose with a right. Lennie gave a cry of terror. Blood welled from his nose. "George," he cried. "Make 'um let me alone, George." He backed until he was against the wall, and Curley followed, slugging him in the face. Lennie's hands remained at his sides; he was too frightened to defend himself. George was on his feet yelling, "Get him, Lennie. Don't let him do it." Lennie covered his face with his huge paws and bleated with terror. He cried, "Make 'um stop, George." Then Curley attacked his stomach and cut off his wind.” Curley know he can do whatever he wants because this is the only job they have left. George and Lennie have to keep this job in order to pursue their dream. That's the only reason Curley had power it was because of his father if he didn't have that power someone would of kicked his ass by
“Lennie was in a panic. His face was contorted. She screamed then, and Lennie's other hand closed over her mouth and nose. "Please don't," he begged. "Oh! Please don't do that. George'll be mad." … "I don't want you to yell. You gonna get me in trouble jus' like George says you will. Now don't you do that." And she
Slim is the foreman of the ranch, admired by the other workers. “He was the jerkline skinner, the price of the ranch, capable of driving ten, sixteen, even twenty mules with
Any good person does not want to watch a friend to be hurt, and George is no exception. George is most worried for Lennie when Curley says ‘“i’m gonna shoot the guts outta that big dumb bastard myself, even if i only got one hand.”’ (steinbeck 48). this is when Curley, Slim and Carlson are getting together to find Lennie and hurt him and kill him. George thought
If George decided against killing Lennie, Curley would have shot the giant instead. Curley’s hate for Lennie
When Curley said he is going to shoot the guts out of Lennie, George was shocked and could only think of one solution. With the way that Curley will kill Lennie, Lennie will be scared, hurt, and wondering about what will happen. Luckily, George was there to talk to him and make him excited and joyful, before Lennie was shot in the
George appreciates Slim’s mature demeanor and views him somewhat as a holy figure. Slim reciprocates his friendship towards George by gifting Lennie a puppy from his liter. George asks a favor from Slim and thanks him saying, “It wasn’t much to you, maybe, but it was a hell of a lot to him” (38). George acts as a God-like figure towards Lennie because he takes care of him and Lennie in return praises him. No human being would commit a murder, killing the one they loved, if the two had a healthy relationship, which was one that George and Lennie possessed.
The only way George knew how to deal with him was letting roam around unsupervised .The day Lennie accidentally kills Curley's wife, he is left all alone, unattended while George and the other guys play horseshoes this . He could have stopped the event from ending so badly if he just let Lennie watch them play or give him a small thing to do to keep him distracted keeping his eyesight. George may care for Lennie, but he fails to keep him safe . An example is when Curley out anger and embarrassment punches Lennie over and over in the gut and the stomach instead of helping Lennie, he just sits back and tell him to fight back. This shows how he would rather prove a point of him being able to fight his own battles then actually helping him out of danger. On one hand Lennie was able to squeeze his hand and subdued him, but on the other hand Lennie is not mentally an adult is severely mentally challenged and has a huge
First, Lennie crushed Curley’s hand, showing that he is capable of doing severe harm to someone without even having to try. After Curley started punching him, he decided to take his hand and squeeze it, because George encouraged him to fight back. Slim said, “Look to me like ever’
Lennie doesn’t protect himself at first but then “George yells, ‘Get him, Lennie. Don’t let him do it.’ ” Lennie goes for Curley’s hand and crunches it into small little pieces. Lennie looks at Curley in panic as he holds his broken hand. George rushes over to tell Lennie to stop, he tells Lennie to stop over and over again.
At this point in the story, George reveals to the audience that Lennie’s troubled actions are reoccuring, and every time he gets in trouble George has to fix it, which contributes to the conflict. Also in chapter one, George says “‘Well, how the hell did she know you jus’ wanted to feel her dress? … She yells and we got to hide in a irrigation ditch all day with guys looking for us and we got to sneak out in the dark and get outta the country’” (11).
Lennie was not trying to kill Curley's wife, he did not know that he was even going to hurt her. All Lennie wanted to do was pet her hair but he never let
When Curley attacks Lennie, he looks confused. He doesn’t know why he is being attacked. He doesn’t know what to do and asks George for help. He tells George to stop Curley. “Lennie covered his face with huge paws and bleated with terror.
At the end of the chapter Sim says “ you hadda George I swear you hadda.” (107).This helps the reader realize this because Slim is god like and his opinions are law meaning that he would've had to do it anyways. What Slim was probably the best thinking is that any other way would've been worse. Lennie either would've died of starvation or he would've been killed by Curley, and even if that didn't happen he would be lynched they would've ran into the same problem in another town.
He is being convinced and persuaded to kill his dog but Slim comforted him during the whole process by saying that he could have one of his own
George saved Lennie by shooting him with a gun in the back of the head. It was fast and painless, but Curley had other plans for Lennie, “We oughtta let ‘im get away. You don’t know that Curley. Curley gont’ta wanta get him lynched. Curley’ll get ‘im killed”( Steinbeck 94). Candy knows that Curely will lynch Lennie if he finds him. George knew he had to find Lennie before Curley. George decided to shoot Lennie because he knew Lennie would have either been locked up in jail his entire life, or have been beaten up and lynched by Curley. After George shoots Lennie, Slim reassures George that he did the right thing, “You hadda, George. I swear you hadda”(Steinbeck 107). George needed Slim to let him know that it was the right thing to do. Slim gave George closure, because George was in awe. George realized he did the right thing after he followed Slim out of the
