The topic that I have chosen to research is the effectiveness of graphic anti-smoking advertisements that are displayed on cigarette packaging as well as those shown on television.
The reason this topic was selected, is that one day, whilst on holiday, a relative had left his pack of cigarettes on a table, depicting the image of a person with mouth cancer. All of my immediate family thought it was a repulsive image to see whilst eating dinner, to the point where one actually picked the package up and put it on the ground, under the table, so that we could not see the image depicted. Once the relative arrived back, he asked where the cigarettes were, picked them up, put the package back on the table, and lit one up. This actions piqued my attention,

A majority of people first try smoking during their adolescence years. (B) Experimentation of young people with tobacco frequently develops into regular smoking and in turn into strong tobacco addiction. A lifetime tobacco habit almost always starts by the time a child graduates from high school.(c)
An Australian survey revealed that the age of which a person first smoked a cigarette has risen slightly from 14.2 years of age in 1995 to 15.9 years of age in 2013. (B) An American national survey showed that 9.3% of students had smoked one full cigarette before the age 13. A further study conducted in 2014 indicated that 34.4% of twelfth grades students and 22.6% of tenth grade students had tried smoking, (C) well below the legal age.
The data obtained from my personal survey also showed that the majority of people who were smokers began their smoking lives under the age of 18 (57.9%). The only other age group that featured in the study was the 18-24 age group (42.1%). Interestingly, this is the age group when smoking is no longer illegal (D) and access to tobacco is much

Females were also more likely to have never taken up smoking.(B) The Australian Bureau of Statistic Health Survey in 2011/2012 denoted that smoking was more prevalent in males than females in most age groups. The only age group where females out ranked males in the smoking states was in the 15-17 age range. Female smokers in this age group (8.6%) out ranked the male smokers by approximately 2%. The 25-34 years age group revealed the highest percentage of smokers for both male and female with 26.7% and 21.1% respectively. (E) Interestingly once the legal age of smoking was reached, rates of smoking increased significantly for both men and women (D). The likely cause for this may be social aspects and being able to purchase tobacco legally. From the survey I conducted the 7.5% of people who responded that they were smokers were all male, no female smokers had taken part in the survey. XXXXX...Find age of smokers
Although tobacco advertisements are banned, people still consume it. The ban started in 1971 and since then has become even more strict on the sponsoring and promotion of tobacco brand logos. Now, all tobacco ads used, dissuade users from consuming. Advertisements in general can be obnoxious and tiresome, but they are sometimes necessary for the seller to get their point across. Ads are either trying to get money from the consumer or driving to change a person’s mind positively. The main reasoning for the creation of advertisements is to persuade the viewer or audience through the evocation of ethos, pathos, and logos, to have a change of mind about the product. The ads I chose are both similar, but have different goals towards their audience.
Tobacco ads have stood out to me from a young age, I was used to seeing cigarette ads in every magazine and street corner. When I was 11 I joined a tobacco advocacy group, I wanted to inform young people my age about the dangers of tobacco but mostly I joined because they paid me. I found these two ads and I remembered sitting in an empty classroom analyzing tobacco ads and discussing how they appeal to us. I found two ads, both from the most recent issue of a popular celebrity gossip magazine. The first major difference one notices is that of the ads is catered to a completely different audience. Blu E-cigarettes cater to the new age of tobacco consumers. While Newport menthol cigarettes are tried and tested, a classic. The major differences in this ad make it difficult to pick which one is most effective at getting more buyers of their product. Newport’s ad is
By coincidence, a study tracking more than 2,500 students at 10 Los Angeles schools who had never smoked tobacco, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, came to the opposite conclusion. It said ninth graders who had tried e-cigarettes were far more likely than other students to start smoking “combustible tobacco” (cigarettes, cigars, hookahs) within a year.
The smoking issue starts from the first tobacco use of the smoker. Almost 90% of adult smoker have tried their first cigarette before the age of 18. At present, one of five children have tried to smoke or vape and 30% of them have smoking-related illness in their later life. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug and an important component of tobacco. Teenagers are exposed to nicotine, not only affecting their brain development, but also making them quit smoking more difficultly. Long term smoking from adolescents seriously affects the health of smokers.
While researching information for the group assignment our group found that over the year’s cigarette ads have changed tremendously. Diego decided to study ads created in the 1960’s where ads were targeted at every marketing group possible. The ads were promoted as something everyone was doing. Even the Flintstone cartoon characters were used in cigarette commercials. Companies promoted cigarettes as a product that not only has a great tobacco taste, but is also quiet refreshing and soothing. Most ads during this time period involved couples where the leading man attracted the women with his cool refreshment of the cigarette. Other ads tried to persuade smokers to get rid of the old items that are not working out so great such as their choice of cigarettes, and switch over to their “Kool” cigarettes. Every company tried convince consumers that their cigarettes were better than the
An estimated 36.5 million or 15.1 % of adults aged 18 years old and older currently smoke cigarettes and more than 16,000,000 have smoking or live with diseases that are related to smoking. According to US department of health and human services, over the past five decades, there is a significant decline in cigarette smoking in the U.S. The progress has slowed in recent years and the prevalence of use of other tobacco products such as vapes, e-cigars and smokeless tobacco
Addiction and substance abuse is a personal fear in most people worldwide. Young people are more susceptible to experimenting with tobacco and alcohol, than middle aged or older people are. Most people reported smoking at the age or eighteen, when they could legally purchase
The Institute of Medicine found that children, who are born between 2000 and 2019, would suffer 249,000 fewer premature deaths and 45,000 fewer deaths from lung cancer, when the legal age to purchase tobacco is increased from 18 to 21 years old (atg.wa.gov 2016). Tobacco is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S, which causes many chronic health complications such as heart disease, cancer, and lung disease (atg.wa.gov 2016). Raising the legal age to purchase tobacco products to 21 in Washington state will decrease the use later in adult life specifically, ages 15 to 17 who are targeted the most through tobacco companies due to their vulnerability and gives loyalty to a specific tobacco company from the addiction of nicotine. Needham, Massachusetts campaigned to raise the legal age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21 in 2005 and won. Results are already compelling, showing that between 2006 and 2012 Needham’s high school smoking rate dropped more than half among girls and boys (atg.wa.gov 2016). Given that nicotine can be such an addictive drug and be seen to be used as a coping mechanism, specifically ages 15 to 17 through their developing stages of life, needs to encounter harder access to get their hands on tobacco products. According to the Center of Disease Control, one in 13 Americans age 17 or younger alive today are estimated to die prematurely due to the effects of smoking (atg.wa.gov 2016). Raising the legal age to
Cigarette smoking has been identified as the number one cause of preventable disease as well as, death worldwide. Today, smoking-related diseases are claiming over 4 00,000 American lives each year. Among people who smoke, 70 percent of them are teenager. Smoking harms almost every organ in the body, causing lung cancer, coronary heart disease, and chronic pulmonary diseases. As a result, researchers have found out that teenagers in Washington State start to purchase tobacco at an early age. The Washington State’s top lawyer was set to unveil legislation seeking to raise legal the smoking age from 18 to 21 (Morris). If the bill would be passed
Teenage smoking can be a result of the influence of other teens, or maybe the amount of peer pressure. This can cause a teen to want to smoke or even think about smoking (Alcid, Arthur, page 1). Statistics show that 794 student and 22.4 percent of teens claimed to be tobacco users. (Alcid, Arthur, page 1). Teens tend to be more abrasive when smoking, and seem to act different while smoking and once they have gotten into the habit of smoking make it a constant thing. In 2003, 21.9 percent of high school students currently smoke cigarettes (Alcid, Arthur, page 1).
Alarmingly, almost all smokers begin smoking before they graduate from high school ("Preventing Tobacco Use Among Young People" 125). Smoking amongst children and teenagers has always been a controversial issue. Consequently cigarette companies are under fire from many directions for targeting the young in their ad campaigns. It is commonly wondered what actually makes them smoke. Recent studies have revealed that there might be more to it than simple curiosity. Some experts have even linked it to depression. The health risks of smoking are not widely disputed, but perhaps the numbers of deaths related to smoking are.
In many country almost every student that smoked in high school would continue on smoking. For example, In syria they made some studies on high school students and the prevalence of current smoking. They found out that in 10th grade the prevalence of smoking is 10.5% , unlike 12th grade which is 22.6%. This shows how this time interval was a big difference , that helps to say that anti smoking programs should be applied in high schools, and from the first year.
One of the largest issues today is adolescent smoking. According to a heath based website, nearly 90% of adult smokers start while they are still teens and they never intend to get hooked. They may start by bumming a cigarette or two from a friend at a party, and then go on to buying an occasional pack. Soon they realize that they can't go without that pack. They've gotten used to reaching for a cigarette first thing in the morning, after meals, or during any stressful time. They become addicted, both physically and psychologically. According to the American Lung Association, each day 6,000 children under the age of 18 smoke their first cigarette. Almost 2,000 of them will become regular smokers – that’s 757, 000 new smokers annually!
Tobacco; one of the most profitable products in history, an addictive substance, and a deadly killer. Smoking tobacco used to be a thing that was endorsed in American society. Now, with the new medical advances and knowledge, society has seen the side effects of smoking and how fatal it actually is. Teenagers have been one of the largest age groups that have been affected by smoking. After analyzing all possible reasons as to why teenagers would smoke while knowing it can affect their health, three possible reasons stuck out the most. Teenagers smoke despite knowing the health problems that originate from smoking because of peer pressure, an “invincibility” mentality, and seeing a role model or family member smoke.
