Graphic Anti Smoking Advertisement Analysis

The topic that I have chosen to research is the effectiveness of graphic anti-smoking advertisements that are displayed on cigarette packaging as well as those shown on television.
The reason this topic was selected, is that one day, whilst on holiday, a relative had left his pack of cigarettes on a table, depicting the image of a person with mouth cancer. All of my immediate family thought it was a repulsive image to see whilst eating dinner, to the point where one actually picked the package up and put it on the ground, under the table, so that we could not see the image depicted. A majority of people first try smoking during their adolescence years. (B) Experimentation of young people with tobacco frequently develops into regular smoking and in turn into strong tobacco addiction. A lifetime tobacco habit almost always starts by the time a child graduates from high school.(c)
An Australian survey revealed that the age of which a person first smoked a cigarette has risen slightly from 14.2 years of age in 1995 to 15.9 years of age in 2013. (B) An American national survey showed that 9.3% of students had smoked one full cigarette before the age 13. A further study conducted in 2014 indicated that 34.4% of twelfth grades students and 22.6% of tenth grade students had tried smoking, (C) well below the legal age.
The data obtained from my personal survey also showed that the majority of people who were smokers began their smoking lives under the age of 18 (57.9%). The only other age group that featured in the study was the 18-24 age group (42.1%). Females were also more likely to have never taken up smoking.(B) The Australian Bureau of Statistic Health Survey in 2011/2012 denoted that smoking was more prevalent in males than females in most age groups. The only age group where females out ranked males in the smoking states was in the 15-17 age range. Female smokers in this age group (8.6%) out ranked the male smokers by approximately 2%. The 25-34 years age group revealed the highest percentage of smokers for both male and female with 26.7% and 21.1% respectively. (E) Interestingly once the legal age of smoking was reached, rates of smoking increased significantly for both men and women (D). The likely cause for this may be social aspects and being able to purchase tobacco legally.
