From the first snippet of getting to be mindful of Frodo's way of life as the new carrier of the Ring, Gollum's only objective involves following him, to the point of transforming into his shadow and of being seen by an extensive number of readers as representing some obscure element in Frodo's own character. The quality of the bond between the two, and additionally the inconceivable possibility of doubtlessly putting Gollum among the evil characters in the story, rises with specific clarity from the absence of any feeling of triumph emanating after death. Unlike all the evils that must be destroyed for good to win, Gollum remains in such an individual association with the legend that his exit is the result of an unpleasant individual battle and an annihilation of a foe as well as a part of the hero`s own inclination. Tolkien, let the story unfold: Unfettered by the chains of innovation and not blinded by its obscuration of reality, the story itself, had the characters tackle the battles, the triumphs, and the disappointments of the actual good and spiritual humans. That is the thing that great narratives do. The reader is especially attracted to the story in light of the fact that the reader gets the chance to know and admire the real, not cardboard, characters, and the characters are genuine in the light of the fact that they have souls, displaying fundamental goodness in the midst of failings and ready to settle on choices in spite of knowing that choices are however a piece of a bigger story. The reader partakes in a mythic universe of Middle-earth and experiences there—without allegory or specific
This is Bilbo’s acceptance of the adventure. Next Bilbo got help from a supernatural aid; a ring. He came across the ring underground in the Goblins territory right before he encountered Gollum. The ring turned out to be Gollum’s and was very important to him, but still Bilbo took it for himself; and that was a smart idea, as it became quite a useful tool throughout his journey. With it he escaped Gollum’s lair; “Gollum was defeated. He dared go no further. He had lost : lost his prey, and lost, too, the only thing he had ever cared about, his precious” (Tolkien 87). The ring helped Bilbo escape the goblins, who Bilbo encountered shortly after fleeing from Gollum. The ring also helped Bilbo escape from the treacherous spiders he and the dwarves came across later on in the story. Finally, Bilbo crossed the threshold, or in other worlds, left the old world behind. The morning after the dwarves had convinced Bilbo to join them, Bilbo found his house trashed, but the dwarves gone. So he assumed they went on without him. Ten minutes before he was due at the Green Dragon Inn, Gandalf appeared at his house informing him that they were all waiting for him to arrive. Flustered, Bilbo was shoved out of his house towards the Inn, without
The Lord of the Rings by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien is a book widely known for its rich language, detailed imagery, and profound story that expands over three volumes and six books. The book is scattered with deep characters ranging in back stories and eventual character development. Motifs, key parts throughout the story, include lightness and darkness, eyes, jewelry, and sword. JRR Tolkien even creates his own language for the solemn race of elves in the lengthy three volume novel. A part of this length may be attributed to the unusual placement of many full-form songs and poems within the book, as a break between the usual story. These poems and songs have ranges of playfulness and thoughtfulness. With uses of made up Hobbit words and beautiful
In the case of Gollum, he is only looking to get the ring back. Another part that stood out to me was the ring itself. Taken from the Dark Lord, Sauron, it offers the wearer unlimited power. This lures many to wear it, thinking they will be all powerful. However, as seen with Gollum, prolonged wear of the ring leads to tremendous self decay, physically and mentally.
For example Tolkien says, “ The hobbit jumped nearly out of his skin when the hiss came in his ears, and he suddenly saw the pale eyes sticking out at him... Asking [riddles] them and sometimes guessing them, had been only the game he had every played with other creatures sitting in the holes in the long, long ago, before he lost all his friends and was driven away, alone, and crept down, down into the dark mountains”(Tolkien 72-73). Tolkien’s intent was to make Gollum’s character not a true monster, but a misunderstood creature that was all alone. Gollum was like many other creatures that had two sides to him, a nice creature that is just looking for a friend and a scary monster that is trying to eat Bilbo. Peter Jackson used Tolkien’s original idea of Gollum’s character and turned it into his own idea to suit his movie.
In the lecture Tolkien tells the readers that the man has the power to create stories in order to describe the events of what people are going through. They can express these stories as “satire, adventure, morality, and fantasy” and “causes it to take living form and colour before the eyes.” This makes the readers understand that the fairy stories are created with the intentions to relate to existing events happening, but can be seen in different ways and told by different personifications.
Heroes are usually known as the brave, strong, and popular characters in a story. That is not how Bilbo Baggins is in the story, The Hobbit. Bilbo Baggins is a character who usually sits at his house while smoking his pipe. Nonetheless, he becomes a hero by saving the dwarves out of the spider’s web, rescuing the dwarves out of jail, and hiding the dwarves from the elves. Which helps him on the journey that he was currently on.
The Non fictitious World of J.R.R Tolkien When it comes to nonfiction, facts and tell-tale events take hold of the book, leaving nothing but cold hard realities. Whether it is because of the gritty truths that many face or repetitive information presented on a page by page basis, what steers most people away is the lack of imagination. That is exactly why I chose to read Master of Middle-Earth, the fiction of the ever-creative master of nonfiction himself, J.R.R. Tolkien. This book gave me the grand idea of how to get around the dreadful terrors of fiction by finding one about the written fantasies of The Lord of the Rings and to a lesser, but still marvelous extent, The Hobbit.
This earns Bilbo some respect from the dwarves as they begin to realize that he is a beneficial asset to their group. Soon after a threatening thunderstorm occurs which renders Bilbo unconscious in a cave. Later when he awakes, Bilbo finds a ring which he absent-mindedly pockets. Bilbo uses quick-wit and bravery to outsmart Gollum, a creature who lives in the cave, in a game of riddles. Afterwards, when Gollum attempts to kill him, Bilbo uses his new ring to elude the creature by turning invisible and escaping this demonstrates Bilbo's newfound
Gollum does not set a good example of consideration of others, which is a very important trait. Murat Arslan describes Gollum in an article: “This fierce creature who is obsessed with himself and plans to eat Bilbo.” (139) “[Bilbo] must get away, out of this horrible darkness, while he had any strength left. He must fight. He must stab the foul thing, put its eyes out, kill it.
Many people have distinct personalities, whether they are adventurous, or don’t enjoy getting out of their comfort zone. This can be somewhat annoying, whether you want your friend to do something and he won’t do it, or if your friends are always gone on some lengthy adventure. In The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins is usually a person who loves to stay indoors all the time, until the dwarves and Gandalf came along. Bilbo then begins to show his Tookish side (the more adventurous side of himself and his family) much more frequently. This side has shone through Bilbo when the dwarves sang their song, when moon letters were discovered on the map, and when with his life on the line, he and gollum played the riddle game.
Gollum is more of a self-centered creature. All he cares about is the ring and will do anything to get it. As the reader we can see that Gollum is smart for accepting the chance to lead Frodo and Sam because he has the upper hand. He knows the territory he is about to lead Sam and Frodo into, while they do not. The reader knows that Gollum plans to overpower Sam and Frodo and steal the ring when he says “We promised: to save our precious, not to let Him have it-never”(Tolkien 283).
“I am glad you are here with me, here at the end of all things, Sam.” Frodo reaches out his hand over the flaming mouth of Mount Doom. The ring slips from his fingers and into the flames. The world returns to where it was before the evil eye had taken over. The Lord of the Rings chronicles the journey of Frodo Baggins to destroy the ring. It follows his transformation from a weak young hobbit to a hero who saves Middle Earth. Frodo is an archetypal hero because he follows the hero’s journey.
The hero’s journey begins with the hero being introduced in their ordinary world. This is where the reader learns about the hero’s background, flaws and strengths. This is so that the reader can establish a bond with the situation, which gives them experience of an adventure through the hero. In chapter 1 of The Hobbit, Tolkien introduces Bilbo Baggins as an ordinary hobbit who lives in an ordinary hobbit hole on the side of The Hill. In this chapter Tolkien hints towards Bilbo’s mother’s side, the Took-clan, who ‘something was not entirely hobbit like about them’ (Page 13).
Bilbo encountered Gollum in a cave located in the depths of the Misty Mountains near Goblin-town. Gollum was a Stoor Hobbit of the River-folk. He wasn’t just a test, but also an enemy of Bilbo. Gollum had a riddle battle with Bilbo, which both Bilbo and Gollum would have to solve alternatively. If Bilbo wins, Gollum would tell him the way out. Prior to that, Bilbo obtained the Ring; this Ring helps Bilbo escape from Gollum. Gollum called the Ring his “birthday present.” Gollum realizes that Bilbo stole the ring, and would get it back at any cost. Bilbo didn’t know what the ring did until he wore it, it made him invisible. Bilbo quickly escaped and found the way out. But he didn’t realize there were goblins. Bilbo also eluded them, but little he knew, the dwarves were there too. He finally reunited with the dwarves and Gandalf; they were so pleased to see he was alive. When Bilbo told his mates about how him being a young hobbit, succeeded to escape Gollum. Everyone began to praise him. The dwarves started to respect him a great deal more after he said to them that he dodged all the guards and escaped Gollum. This test showed Bilbo how
