I believe that every person should have the opportunity to go to college in order to thrive. However, a lot of kids decide not to because of the issue I am also facing, finances. I do have a job, but after bills are paid, not much is left over. I have to give my dad money every month for my car insurance and my mom money for my phone bill. This past year has been incredibly difficult on my parents. My father had an extreme cut in his work hours by almost 20 hours per week. This has created an extreme burden on my family. My mother and father did not have the opportunity to go to college themselves, simply because they could not afford it. My mom is an LNA at summer crest and has a low salary, due to only being able to be part time. My father is a steel maker at Rugers, and due …show more content…
However, my parents have told me that they simply do not have any extra money to give me for college, not even money for books. I work 28 hours a week on top of going to school just so I can try my best to save for college along with paying for my essentials. When my parents told me they wouldn't be helping me with college it was like a wave of sadness hit me. My parents told me that they simply can not afford to help me through college. My mom also has arthritis in both of her hands and can barely use her thumbs anymore. At some point this year she is going to have to get surgery on them because it interferes with her work and every day life. When my mom gets this surgery she will be out of work for at least 4 months leaving my dad to maintain all the bills. I have seen my dad with burns all over his dads day after day from his job and have seen how much it drains him. Since he never had the opportunity of college he is forced to have a very dangerous and hard working job which is often harmful to him. I want to be able to go to college, and receive the education that my parents were never able to
When I was a freshman in high school, my parents sat me down in the living room and told me that if I wanted to go to college, I’d have to pay for it myself. Our financial difficulties were large enough to merit the statement. My step-dad was hardly able to work anymore because of health problems from a career in manufacturing. My mom also suffered in the over-saturated market for dental hygienists in Mesa—she was recently fired from a corporate office for refusing to sell unnecessary treatments to patients, and could only find a job in an office run by an abusive dentist who screamed at his employees and who even threw a computer at an assistant at one point. My mom needed to leave the office, but nobody knew if she would find work anywhere
The majority of students want to go to college. Some have the privilege to go to college while it's a dream for others because they can’t afford it. College is a way too expensive nowadays and the price for it keeps going up. Since I currently have no job and only one of my parents work I will not be able to pay for college. I want to be able to go to college and study something in the business related field to help our economy grow and prosper. Having an additional education after high school is very
Once my brother graduated high school, my mother moved 500 miles away, to Connecticut. I decided to remain at home in West Virginia with my father. For various reasons, such as drugs and alcohol, living with him was no longer in my best interest. At this time, I was half way through high school. For a few months, I spent time living with friends. Before long, my grandmother, who I'm not particularly close to, graciously allowed me to live with her. She lives below the poverty line. In order to live in her house, I was driven to support myself. I work between 20-30 hours a week, which allows me to pay for bills, my vehicle, food, and etc. As soon as I graduate, I will be living on my own, and paying for my college tuition, by myself. It is difficult now to make ends meet, and in the coming college year the financial difficulty will greatly increase. I am endeavoring through these hard times, and I will only continue to do that by keeping my grades up as well as having the endless
My mom is a food service worker and my dad was a christmas tree farmer. Although we never had a lot of money, we made things work. We never went on any vacations and I wasn’t able to play sports because they cost too much, but that was okay because we were together and happy. Now that my dad is no longer here to support us, we have been struggling. The mortgage is always behind, something always seems to be shut off in our house as a result of not being able to pay the bills, and the pantry isn’t as full as it used to be. Financial issues has also been affecting my education. As I’m applying to colleges, I find myself limited in the number of schools I can apply to because not all colleges have fee waivers I can’t afford to pay several fees to apply to as many colleges as I’d would like to. I’ve also had hesitation in going to college just because of the cost of it. My goal in life is to become a doctor, which, normally takes around eight years. Eight years of college is not cheap, and the idea of having to pay thousands of dollars has scared
Before the first year of college came around, I realized that I had a lot of leftover money that had to be paid after my scholarships, knowing that my parents had no money to offer I was frightened. I was shaken to the core, I realized that my dream of going to college could all be over in a matter of seconds. Soon, I stepped into the financial aid office with my parents on each side of me and hoping for the worst. I soon found out that I would be eligible to apply for loans, yet I realized that there was still money that wasn’t covered with my loans. The last option was parents loan, and I looked at my parents and without hesitation took the loan. This was my dream and my parents wanted me to strive and took on something that they didn’t have to. I know that I will have to pay them cent by cent, but I know I will be able to do it. My parents were able to help my dream become a reality. I have learned that I do not have to be scared that I need to look forward and be proud of what I have accomplished so far. As my father told me to keep my head held high because I deserve to be in school like everyone else that my money should not make me feel like I shouldn’t be here at
At times we were living paycheck to paycheck, and although I was too young to understand, it was a very stressful time for my parents. Neither of my parents received a college degree, but both agree they wished they had. Because of this, my parents encouraged strongly from the day I was born for me to go to college. Although, they wouldn't be able to help out or save enough to send my sister and I themselves, they still wanted better for both of us. The day that I selected the University of Northern Iowa for an education major was, most likely, one of the happiest days of their lives. I don't have much saved for college because making ends meet is and was much more important. Each paycheck that I have earned I used in some way to help my parents or myself for the week. Whether that's paying my own phone bill or filling up in my parents vehicle with gas, I wanted to help. Now, I use most of the savings I have to prepare for college life. My financial situation isn't as dire as my Peruvian students, but it still lack much of what my classmates and friends have. All my life, I've seen struggle with money, but now I want to be sure that I make my parents proud by leading a life they never
Without scholarships, grants and financial aids, I will not be able to attend college. My family has to save up to pay for other necessities like bills, insurance, my siblings and my grandmother. I try to save whatever dollar bills or pennies I can find, to help save money being spent. If I receive enough financial help to pay for my first year of college, I will apply for Work Study to save up on money to start supporting myself financially and learn not to depend on my family income but my own. I will continue to apply for financial aid but try to pay for college with my own money as well. I want to take unnecessary burden off of my parents
My parents had a dream to assist college, but unfortunately they were not able to accomplish their dream. Therefore, they sacrifice to allow my siblings and I to achieve a goal they were unable to. My mother does not work due to her lupus condition. My father is a maintenance worker for Sealy Co. Inc. They are also helping my older brother financially to pay his education expenses. My younger sister is a junior in high school and a cashier at a fast-food restaurant. I am a work-study student, working 10 hours a week at the Career Center as a Career Service Assistant. I am also applying for other scholarships and Federal Student Aid.
If you look at my family’s income, you might wonder why I need financial assistance to go to college, but if you look deeper, you will understand why it is necessary that I receive financial aid. Before I was born, my mom worked as an accountant, and my dad as a software engineer. As soon as I was born, my mom quit her job and stayed home to raise my sister and I. Since then, we have lived on a single income. My parents saved what they could for both my sister and I, but we do not have enough savings to pay for my college education due to many financial burdens presented to us over the years.
I have always wanted to help relieve my parents from stress and work, provide for them without calling for financial help, and live with minimal troubles. As I grew older, I realized the only way that I could aid my parents: I need to go to school and do well. I worked as hard as I could in all my classes at school, pushing myself as much as I could to advance to the next year with my best. College is the next step, but how could I get through it without financial problems that could grow worse anytime? This question pestered me relentlessly everytime I think about attending college until I decided I need to apply for any scholarship that would help me reach my life goals.
My financial problem is one of my main challenges in college, my family don’t have enough money to fully support me and my brother to attend college, which is why we’re just taking a lot of student loans. My mother is just a registered nurse at a hospital and my father is unemployed. This difficult situation always stresses me out in college. It puts an unnecessary pressure on me. My best solution for that problem is just to study really hard all the time as decent grades can put me in a position where I am more likely to get a scholarships even if i don't get many scholarships, i think my hard-work will eventually payoff.
However, before I can offer my hand I will need the help of others, as I realize that my hard work will not be enough to pursue my dreams. Like many other young college students I am faced with the reality of not having a college fund in place or savings to tap into. I know I have made my family very proud with how far I have come in such a short time. But I am only halfway through my journey and the reality of just how much a good education costs is terrifying. I can actually see the worry in my mother’s eyes as she reassures me that we will find a way to make it happen, but as a single mother she does not have many options.
As a child of a single parent of two I have witnessed my mother struggle to provide for our family at times. She works two jobs while I watch my five year old sister when necessary. Along with my mother working two jobs I also have a job just to help pay for the things that I know I will need as a high school senior. Our situation makes me wonder how I will manage to pay for school because my mother cannot do it on her own. In addition to that my grandmother is in remission from breast cancer treatment and my mother provides for her when she asks. I am constantly applying for scholarships with the hope that I will go to school for free.
My family is broke. We live in the ugly part of town, surrounded by gangs and violence. My parents only speak spanish, therefore; their jobs pay near minimum wage. Combined my parents made about $40,000 yearly. However, at the beginning of the year my mom was laid off. Things have been tough at home lately. Thankfully we live in a one bedroom apartment that offers cheap rent. If it was not for that, we would not have enough money to get by. I run my own online business and make decent amount of money; most which I help pay bills and food though. Before I created my business, we skipped meals and could not afford the light bill. A big challenge I commonly think about is how I am going to afford college. This is a huge reason why I am so serious
Any kid in a family with little money has heard, “Do well in school and you’ll get a scholarship, it will be fine”. Easy for you to say. But unless you are in that position you do not have any idea what it feels like to have a million things expected of you and the rest of your life depending on it. Not to mention, college did not cost $60,000 when our parents went to school.
