Beneath the Surface The Ocean is a miraculous place filled to the brim with foreign creatures and wondrous wildlife. From the Great Orcas of the Antarctic waters to the minuscule plankton, these marine life conquer the ocean's depths, but it's not just the creatures that reside here. Coral occupy their fair share of space upon the ocean's floor filling the waters with their glamour and residential charm for those in search of shelter. There are the downsides to a corrupted ocean such as ours; continuous melting of the ice caps and the pollution plaguing the water. Creatures such as the Goblin Shark have adapted to the darkness, ambushing their prey with its extendable jaws almost as long as their snout, and holding up to 35-53 rows of upper teeth and 31 to 62 rows of lower teeth. As astonishing as oceanic life goes, goblin sharks are not easy on the eyes. Their long snout protruding from its forehead is a clear sign that it differs from other sharks. It’s known that they are the last living member of a family of sharks known as the Mitsukurinidae, believed to exist before the dinosaurs, therefore deemed a living fossil The Goblin Shark It was first discovered off the shore of Japan in 1898 by Alan Owston who later gave it to Dr. Kakichi Mitsukuri, not knowing what to do with it he gave it to American scientist David Jordan, deeming it a new species names Mitsukurina Owstoni, honoring the two men who gave it to him. The male on the other hand who is quite smaller in size, has decided it had no use for these adaptations, instead it spends its whole life in search of a female.This is called a permanent parasitic mate. When a male comes across the female in the darkened abyss, it bites onto her with his sharp teeth. Over time he will physically fuse with the female, attaching to her bloodstream and skin, losing his eyes and internal organs in the process. The Frilled shark In Tokyo,Japan 2007, a fisherman alerted the Awashiwa Marine Park Officials that he spotted ‘a very unusual eel with needle like teeth’ This very specimen was later identified as the Frilled Shark,cousin to the Goblin Shark. Like the Goblin shark, the Frilled Shark is also titled a living fossil due to the fact that it has had little evolutionary changes over the past millions of years. These Sharks have been known to show up around places south to Australia, usually found around the Pacific Ocean.
