For years we have continuously heard the debate on the news about global warming. But, what is global warming? What causes it? Why should be concerned that the Earth is getting warmer?

The Earth is warming up, so what does this mean for the billions of people that will be affected, if global warming continues? Global warming is the act of Greenhouse Gases; which is Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen in the form of water vapor. These greenhouse gases are how the Earth stays warm, heat comes from the sun and with the help of greenhouse gases; the heat from the sun becomes trapped; to keep the Earth warm. Since the industrial revolution, which increased the use of fossil fuel, the Earth’s temperature has been rising at an alarming rate (Gale Video, 2015). Global warming is affecting the lives of billions of people, with extreme weather, effects on food production, and rising health concerns.

Most of the world’s population has agreed that global warming is real, and the major culprit in this crime is humans. Yet there are some exceptions who consider global warming a myth, some have argued that there has been a reduction in the rising of the global temperature, consequently causing civilians to refute the idea of the earth “warming”. This false information has led to little or no coverage about this issue; subsequently producing little or no solutions to this problem ravaging the place we call home. Among the major effects of global warming are the acidification of the ocean, the increase in drought and heatwaves, and the warming of the ocean.

According to Robert Frost once said, “ Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice. From what I’ve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire.” This quotation can link to the concept of global warming. Global warming can be interpreted as an increase in the earth's average atmospheric temperature that induces corresponding changes in climate, and that may be associated with the greenhouse effect. I chose to do my cause and effect essay on global warming because I believe it has a significant impact on humans, not only today but especially in the future.

Scientists around the world have been researching climate change since the 1970’s. One thing most agree on is that the temperature of Earth is rising at a rapid pace and that global warming has been caused mostly by human activity. Our atmosphere contains gases that act as a blanket, because it traps heat from the sun and prevents it from escaping back into space. The trapping of the sun’s heat by these gases is known as the greenhouse effect, and the gases are called greenhouse gases. The main greenhouse gases that occur in nature are carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. Without the greenhouse effect, earth would be too cold to support life.

Global warming represents a very large threat to our planet. But first off, what is global warming? It is the significant increase in the Earth’s temperature over a short period time as a result of human activity. A congruous mix of organisms, people, and environments are being harmed. Ocean levels have risen, species are becoming extinct, and the natural world is not what it used to be. Global Warming is responsible for the increase in natural disasters, because since the global climate has been continuously increasing over the years it has increased the chances for natural disasters to occur around the world.

Some of this energy is then reflected back towards space as infrared energy. Now gases such as nitrogen and oxygen that make up our atmosphere are only two particles, and therefor are tightly bound and don’t absorb much heat. The belief is that the greenhouse effect causes the rise in global warming. The greenhouse effect is “Natural process of atmospheric warming in which solar energy absorbed by the earth’s surface is reradiated and absorbed by certain atmospheric gases, primarily carbon dioxide and water vapor,” (Boorstein). This simply means the Earth’s gases trap the sun’s radiation on Earth, which would cause a rise in the temperature. The contributing factors that raise these gases are many.

It’s ironic to think that only years earlier in the 1970’s the phenomenon was global cooling, now on a dime it suddenly shifted from intense glaciation to excessive carbon dioxide emissions that raise the temperature of the planet. A large number of influential scientists and engineers do not agree that drastic actions on global warming are necessary. This is simply just another bizarre fad that will soon fade due to wishy washy scientific theorems and emphasized social agendas. With the use of basic science and logic the idea of Global Warming can be dismantled and proven to be illegitimate and a hoax.
