Growing up in the small town of Pocahontas, Iowa gives appreciation to the simplicity of tight-knit communities. With a population of 1,800 people, there is single café where local farmers enjoy a morning cup of coffee while discussing the news. Rural communities are a place where children have birthday parties at the local pizza place and teenagers’ first jobs are as detasslers. As a child, your mother knows if you got in trouble at school before you return home and everyone’s name is well known throughout the area.

For centuries the Nooksack tribe located in Northwest Washington has been dependent on the wilderness for survival. Originally defined as a horticultural community, the Nooksack people have used their knowledge the land to support their daily necessities of food and shelter. Salmon runs in the nearby Nooksack River, named after the local tribe, continue to be a steady source of protein for the tribe up to this day. However, this way of life has lately been threatened by the diminishing glaciers of nearby Mount Baker. In order to understand the significance this event has to the culture of the Nooksack tribe, we must first look at how their culture has changed in the past, how it would possibly change in response to the glacial thinning and what the reemergence of Mount Baker may mean for future Nooksack generations.
Relationships, specifically romantic relationships, play a very important part in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Upon reading Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, one will notice that there appears to be a behavioral pattern present in the relationships between Gatsby and Daisy, Daisy and Tom, and Nick and Jordan. As I explain in this paper, these relationships suffer from a fear of intimacy, a fear of the inevitable mutual emotional pain that occurs when humans grow close to one another. In the interest of clarity, let us first take a closer look at the theory that humans cannot grow close without harming one another, the theory known as the “hedgehog’s dilemma.”
In the Netla Edwards reading “Radiation, Tobacco, and Illness in Point Hope, Alaska”, the author uses the case study of Project Chariot and its implications on the local Inupiat people. Edwards ties the case study to broader questions regarding science, language, its involvement in the justification of choosing its subject. This ties in nicely with Kyle Whyte’s piece on The Climate and Traditional Knowledges Workgroup (CTKW) and their guidelines for ethical conduct. Project Chariot regarded the area of Point Hope, Alaska as remote and used this to justify their radiation experiment. For me, this demonstrates the issues that arise from the social construction of wilderness and nature as remote from human influence. The construction of wilderness
My life is clearly represented by the symbolic choices I made. Everything I drew means something important to me. The CN Tower and the running man that I drew on the bottom portion of the page are excellent examples of this. The running man represents my passion of running and desire to chase after my dreams. The CN Tower represents the city of Toronto and the place in which I was born and raised in.
As a busy “cross roads community” at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Linglestown was soon built up as an area of commerce, cultural, religious, and educated people (Linglestown History, nd). The Square became the center of the community surrounded by schools, churches, shops, and a community park. The demography of many small towns change over time due to the influence of social factors; however, the demography of Linglestown remains similar to when the European settlers arrived in the Village (Moore & Asay, 2013).
Around the month of April in 1847, Joseph Kello’s mother, Rachel Lindell, gets pregnant. Rachel faces the traumatic task of telling her parents that she, unmarried at the age of 19, is pregnant. For approximately six months, she endures the changes in her appearance indicating to friends and neighbors that she is pregnant. Finally, on Thursday, October 7, 1847, Joseph’s father, Charles H. Kello, marries Rachel at the Asbury Methodist Church in the city of Wilmington.* Three months later, on January 6, 1848, Joseph is born. (L7) 62) (L184)
I look up from my phone after the clock turns from 11:59 pm to 12:00 am and gaze upon Honey Pot Lake as it mirrors the pink and gold clouds illuminated by the setting sun’s rays as they bend over earth's curvature. I take in the beauty of the sunset and await the soon to come sunrise. As i, for the last time, experience the beauty of the pristine nature that bethel alaska has to offer, turn my head towards my adjacent friend and proclaim in a gloomy yet glad tone, “I never want to leave this place.” My experiences in bethel alaska from my two school immersion trips truly formed who I am today.

Becoming a graduate student at Berry College will do more than just provide a Master’s degree; it will be an opportunity to develop my personal and professional aspirations. There is no other graduate program that has impressed me more than Berry College’s dedication to academic excellence, culture, and core values. It is evident that Berry desires to develop its graduates professionally, personally, and spiritually, whereas other programs I have researched are primarily concerned with professional advancement. Berry gives its students the guidance, comradeship, and support they need to develop into insightful clinicians and individuals.
It takes a lot to rip apart a town. It takes a lot to ravage a community, particularly one as tightly-knit as Ridgway, Pennsylvania. Nestled snugly at the southeastern edge of Allegheny National Forest, Ridgway’s population has dipped to just below four thousand in recent years, though in its 191 years of settlement, it’s never once been called home by more than roughly six thousand people at once. Its proximity to the forest attracts huntsmen and hikers alike, but unless one were actively looking for the town—the square mileage of which comes in at just over two and a half miles, total—it would be remarkably easy for Ridgway to not make a blip on someone’s radar at all. It’s small, out of the way, and most of all, quiet—a recipe for insignificance.
My first memory that I have of Hotchkiss was the day that I was enrolled in kindergarden. It was the first time that I had seen the town since we had moved here from Texas. To a kid who had never seen anything other than endless acres of shrubs and mesquite trees, the towering mountains and greenery blew me away. For months I would spend all of my time after school exploring where I lived and biking around town with my friends. As the years have gone by this tiny town has still kept that certain magic that enthralled me as a kid, if only in a more reminiscent way rather than just pure wonder. However, the most important part of Hotchkiss to me is the effect that it had on who I am. From the day that I became a part of this lovely town, I have learned three major values that have played a key role in the decisions I’ve made. These values were hard work, community, and pride.
In the recent years, there has been an increasing interest in using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in scientific, civilian, and military applications. Quadcopter UAV is defined as a small vehicle with four rotor-propeller sets distributed around its body \citep{Salih}. It is one of the most popular designs for UAV due to their ability in vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), simplicity in its mechanical configuration and ease of maintenance. In addition, the use of four small propellers in quadcopter reduces the danger posed by the propellers if it touches external object as compared with one big propeller in helicopter or airplane \citep{Nemati}. One of the quadcopter types that gains growing attention is the racing or high speed quadcopters due to their wide range of applications in surveillance, search, rescue, fire fighting, UAV based delivery, and other similar missions. For efficient surveillance tasks, it is important that the quadcopter has a precise control on its attitude, speed, and altitude \citep{Elfeky}.
Take a trip to a nearby university. As you walk the pristine courtyards, perhaps you see a small group of upperclassmen holding trays of food and containers of alcohol for a later party. Your eyes flicker towards the alcohol being carried in the arms of a laughing male in the rowdy group, knowing that it will only enhance their wild behavior, causing them to act out inappropriately. However, only those who attended the party will know what inappropriate actions were displayed. Nonetheless, what is unknown to those attending the party, and many Americans, is that in recent years at least 23% of women in college will later report that they were sexually assaulted (Wallace). Without parental guidance a newly found type of freedom has resonance in college students. Some students choose to abuse their newly found freedom in illegal manners that include sexual harassment. Sexual harassment has captured the attention of many universities in the last few years. With the reports increasing, many universities have taken action to protect their students from forms of unwanted sexual contact which can range from forced kissing, to touching, to rape. Previously, in order to protect their reputation, many universities attempted to cover up few reports of sexual harassment. However, due to the recent dramatic rise in reports of sexual harassment, universities have now gone to great lengths to stop further reports of sexual harassments by effectively placing restrictions and policies to
